ARC Review - The New Ghostbusters Vol. 1

The New Ghostbusters Vol. 1
By: Dan Schoening &  Erik Burnham
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Pub. Date: July 16, 2013
ISBN: 978-1613776780
Pages: 104

Review:

I was a big fan of the Ghostbusters movies and even a bigger fan of The Real Ghostbusters cartoons back when I was a kid. Well, I guess you can say I'm still a fan as I have the cartoon on DVDs and I own one Ghostbusters t-shirt. With the rumored third movie still in development hell, fans can look forward to the new comic series from IDW Publishing, who kindly sent me a free copy (along with NetGalley) in exchange for my honest review.

The original four Ghostbusters (Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond "Ray" Stantz, Dr. Egon Spengler, & Winston Zeddemore) have been zapped by paranormal entities and dragged to a demon dimension. Months have gone by and New York City is in chaos as there are countless ghost sightings. A new crew of Ghostbusters has been formed to take care of the ghosts. The new team is Janine Melnitz (the Ghostbusters' Secretary), Melanie Ortiz (an FBI agent), Kylie Griffin (manager of Ray's Occult Bookstore), and Ron Alexander (a former member of a rival ghost hunting company). The new team works together (despite a few differences) to take care of the ghosts and to locate the missing Ghostbusters.

So would you read a book just because of the hype?

My Answer:
Yes, I've been a victim of the book hype! Back when the first Harry Potter movie was announced, I bought the paperback at Walmart. Soon after, I found two and three at Barnes & Noble in hardback at 30% off. And of course I bought every other sequel that came out. I bought the Twilight sequels (as they came out), though I had read the first book, after I had heard about the first movie. I wasn't too impressed about the movie or the sequels and I have never gotten around to reading the other books. I recall the first season of True Blood being advertised, so I bought the paperback of the first Sookie Stackhouse book at Walmart. On the exact same day I found three more Stackhouse books at my local library for ten cents each! I fell in love with the books, though I haven't read the complete series, resulting in me buying the first season on DVD. Now I look forward (good or bad) to watching each new season every summer on HBO.

Golden Records: American Patriotic Songs
k: http://bit.ly/10xwpzx
The 4th of July is just over a week away and it would be a great time to celebrate the founding of our wonderful country by listening to some timeless classics.

Golden Records recently released twenty classic songs titled American Patriotic Songs onto a digital download for a whole new generation to enjoy. Yes, Golden Records is the studio that released many children's songs and stories onto vinyl records years ago, but they started releasing newly recorded tracks and classics last year on CDs and digital.

Review:

I have read many Christian novels over the past several years. One of my favorite series is Heirs of Montana (Land Of My Heart; The Coming Storm; To Dream Anew; The Hope Within) by Tracie Peterson, so I was more than eager to read her newest book, The Quarryman's Bride, which I received free of charge from Litfuse Publicity Group and Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.

In the Quarryman's Bride, Emmalyne Knox had fallen madly in love with Tavin MacLachlan, who she plans on marrying, this is until a Scottish family tradition gets in the way. It seems her father has the final decision on her future plans and he quickly puts an end to his daughter's marriage plans. Her only future is to take care of her aging parents and to never marry.

Monday Morning Madness #20: Outside Of My Comfort Zone

I skipped last week's post due to I just didn't have time to write it. I've been a little depressed for the past month or so, causing me to break my diet and eat any junk food in sight. I haven't been exercising as much either. Cross your fingers for me to actually get a workout routine started today. My life took a chaotic turn when my father had a stroke back in early April, who has now recovered almost fully and is back to work.

When any type of life or death situations occur to your family, friends, or to yourself, you start to look over your life. Which was exactly what I did and it has caused me to become an emotional mess for the past month. Let's face the facts: I'm in my early 30s, single, no children, out of shape, and my job direction is going nowhere. Not to mention my anxiety issues still popup from time to time.

I've decided I need to make some changes, hopefully by working out today and making a daily habit of it. My dream goal is to published novels and make a decent living from it, but it is never going to happened until I vaporize this writer's block (or laziness) and actually sit down and type!

I have been editing a group project written by myself and four other writers! I love writing short fiction for children/teens, but I've been wanting to switch genres, maybe to romance. I have dozens of Harlequin type books I have bought at a thrift store just sitting around and collecting dust. The only way to write a different genre is to read it! I read many inspirational romances, but not very many Harlequins, though I have read a few Debra Webb titles.

Review:

Arriving in stores today on DVD & Blu-ray is the critically acclaimed BBC series Call the Midwife: Season Two. The series is created & written by Heidi Thomas, which is based on the memoirs (Call the Midwife, Shadows of the Workhouse, and Farewell to the Eastside) by the late Jennifer Worth.

Call the Midwife is set in the poverty-stricken East London in the 1950's, where Jenny Lee (played by Jessica Raine), works at the Nonnatus House, a convent that serves as a hospital for the poor. Along side her are her fellow nurses Trixie, Cynthia, Chummy, and the Sisters, Julienne, Evangelina, Bernadette and Monica Joan, who are all midwifes, but attend to other medical situations that occur around the poor neighborhoods.

Season two brings many more challenges to the midwives as each patient comes with their own problems which eventually become the midwives' problems. Nurse Chummy and her husband PC Noakes head off to Africa for missionary work, but they later return with life changing news. Sister Monica Joan's age is quickly catching up with her. Sister Bernadette has a health crisis as she struggles with her feelings for Dr. Turner. Jenny’s best-friend, Jimmy, is getting married, which stirs past feelings for her.

I almost passed on reading Barefoot Summer. Her loving family and friends have tried to help her cope with her loss, but she can't seem to put things behind her and move on. She occupies her days as a veterinarian in her riverside town, but her brother's death still haunts her.

The town's annual regatta is approaching and Madison plans on entering the race as it was her brother's dream to win it. Sounds easy, right?

In this sequel to Leaving Lancaster, Holly Fisher had left her home in suburban Seattle and traveled to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where she reunited with her long-lost relatives, including her Amish grandmother.

Instead of taking her time to understand the Amish ways, she jumps right in as she has fallen in love with Zach, a Mennonite veterinarian, who quickly proposes marriage to her. In her eyes, Zach would make the perfect husband, but her mother and Amish grandmother think she is rushing a bit too quickly. It seems Zach has a dubious past that he has been hiding from her.

Review - The Boxcar Children: The Boardwalk Mystery

The Boxcar Children: The Boardwalk Mystery
Created By: Gertrude Chandler Warner
Written By: Tim Jessell
Publisher: Albert Whitman & Company
Pub. Date: March 1, 2013
ISBN: 978-0807508039
Pages: 144

Review:

Who doesn't remember reading The Boxcar Children when they were in elementary school? The original book by Gertrude Chandler Warner was published in 1924 and was reissued in 1942. The second book wasn't published until 1949. The author wrote a total of nineteen books until her death in 1979. The series continued in 1991 with a variety of ghostwriters writing new addictions and specials.

Recently, I had a chance to review book #131, The Boardwalk Mystery, from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. I remember reading the original 19 books during my early elementary years and I was excited when the new books were released. I still own several of the books.

The Alden children (Henry, Violet, Jessie and Benny) are traveling with their grandfather to Oceanside, New Jersey on a business trip. The kids are excited about playing in the sand, exploring the boardwalk, and seeing all the attractions at Hanson's Amusements, which is owned by their grandfather's business friend, Mr. Hanson.

Monday Morning Madness #19: A Start At A Late Spring Cleaning

No, I didn't forget about the past two Monday posts. I thought I would just take a few weeks off since two weeks ago was Memorial Day and last week I was just too busy to get a post written. Plus, I was completely worn out from pulling up an old carpet in the basement that had took a turn for the worse after some rain water flooded the garage and basement last month. I guess I'm finally starting my spring cleaning as I filled six boxes and two paper bags full of books that I plan on donating, but first I need to remove them from my Shelfari shelf and that will take a few days to complete.

I'm sick and tired of all the thunderstorms. It rained liked every other day for the past few weeks, in which it caused the electric to flip on & off for a few days, the cable & internet has started to act wacky, and the telephone line doesn't want to connect. Thank God for cell phones!

There are not very many options for internet service around my area. I guess I should be thankful that it works most of the time. Has anyone tried dial-up internet?

Review:

Oz the Great and Powerful is being released on Blu-Ray and DVD this week, but the film isn't the only recent Oz incarnation. Back in 2007, the Sci Fi Channel (now known as SyFy) aired a three-part mini-series Tin Man, based on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but with a science fiction twist. Mill Creek Entertainment released Tin Man on Blu-Ray and DVD last month, which they kindly sent me a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

Zooey Deschanel plays DG, a small town waitress who life is completely changed when a storm sends her to O.Z. (Outer Zone). She quickly befriends Glitch (played by Alan Cumming), a former "Tin Man" law enforcer named Wyatt Cain (played by Neal McDonough), and Raw (played by Raoul Trujillo). O.Z. is now ruled by Azkadellia, who had overthrown her own mother, the Queen, and Azkadellia happens to be DG's sister.

DG learns about her true heritage. It seems that the original Dorothy Gale is actually her "greatest-great-grandmother." She soon realizes that all the evil in O.Z. was created by a mistake she made as a child. Along with her new friends, she plans on stopping the evil Azkadellia and restoring O.Z. to its original glory.

Author Tricia Goyer is back with the second installment in the Seven Brides For Seven Bachelors series, which I received a free copy from Litfuse Publicity and Zondervan in exchange for my honest review.

The Promise Book takes place in the Amish community of West Kootenai, Montana, where single Amish men travel to and stay for six months, typically from the spring to the fall. These men are there to hunt, but the majority of them leave with brides.

Lydia Wise had left the Amish lifestyle years ago. She has been living in Seattle, Washington as a book editor, but she returns to Kootenai after her mother's death. While going through her mother's belongings, she discovers a Promise box containing scriptures and prayers that slowly brings her closer to her Amish heritage.
