Why do moviegoers flock to overpriced theaters to endure yet another lazy, plot-ridden dinosaur flick? It appears I’ve inadvertently provided my own answer—dinosaurs. Not the majestic, real dinosaurs of yore; those are long extinct and confined to the annals of history. What we have now is a parade of CGI monstrosities, rendered with the slickness of modern technology, but lacking the soul of artistic creativity. Yes, running to the big screen to witness that sounds utterly thrilling—at least, that’s the sound of my dripping sarcasm.

Personally, I find scant interest in the latest installment of the Jurassic franchise. Oh, forgive me for the slight oversight—it seems it has been rebranded as Jurassic World. Clever move, really—renaming a franchise is like putting a fresh coat of paint on an old, forgotten barn; it might look shiny, but it’s still just a rotting structure. The studio heads are milking every last dime from moviegoers' pockets for yet another mindless, clichéd popcorn flick, leaving our wallets decidedly lighter.

Now, let's pivot to the main event: Jurassic World Rebirth, the seventh entry in a franchise that arguably should have stopped at the original 1993 film. Remember when Spielberg opted against Michael Crichton’s original grim ending, opting instead to let the dino-games continue? True, Crichton’s The Lost World offered a second island, but considering how the cinematic industry has gone, it’s astounding it took them this long to exploit the franchise further.

I have a love-hate relationship with fictional series that continue long after the author's death. It's a contentious issue in the literary community—it sparks debates, deliberations, and, at times, outright fury. Whether the extension of a beloved series was part of the author's grand design or a last-minute decision made by their estate or publisher, fans react with passion. Personally, I fall into the camp that doesn’t mind as long as the new author or authors are given proper credit on the cover and it's not, cough, cough, ghostwritten. In my eyes, the utmost priority is that the story is well-crafted. Different writers have their own narratives and styles, but I want to see these new authors treat the source material with respect rather than mimicry.

Take, for example, the late Clive Cussler (1931-2020). His novels have continued to thrill fans even after his passing. And you know what? The new authors get their due credit right on the cover—although let’s be real, Clive’s name still dominates the page like a ship's captain who refuses to be overshadowed. The latest installment is The Iron Storm, written by Jack Du Brul, marking the 15th adventure in the Isaac Bell series that kicked off in 2007 with The Chase. It follows the relentless, no-nonsense private investigator Isaac Bell, who prowls the streets of early 20th-century America like a sleek cat on the hunt.

Tom Clancy: 'Line of Demarcation' – Good Read Despite Familiar Plot

TOM CLANCY:
LINE OF DEMARCATION
Jack Ryan JR., #13
by M. P. Woodward
Putnam, 2025
★★★★✰

It starts with the destruction of a US Coast Guard cutter and the loss of her entire crew. But the USCG Claiborne was on an innocuous mission to open a sea lane between an oil field off the coast of South America and the refineries of southern Louisiana. The destruction of the ship, tragic as it is, won't stop that mission from continuing.

So who would sacrifice twenty-two men and women just to slow down the plan? That's the question plaguing Jack Ryan Jr. He's in Guyana to work a deal to get his company, Hendley Associates, in on the ground floor of this new discovery, but Russia’s Wagner Group and a pack of Venezuelan narco-terrorists have other ideas—and will risk war with the United States to see them through. It's up to Jack to identify the killers before they draw a bead on him, but how can he do that when the line of demarcation between friend and foe is constantly shifting?

Dear Readers,

Is it just me, or is anyone else struggling to keep up with all the new "Tom Clancy" novels? Ever since Tom Clancy passed away, Putnam has been churning out these books at a dizzying pace, authored by a mix of writers—some more adept than others. The latest "Tom Clancy" title is Line of Demarcation, the 13th installment in the Jack Ryan series, or rather, the Jack Ryan spinoff. And what’s the deal with the recent covers? They all seem strikingly similar, and I'm not just talking about the "Tom Clancy" books but also the broader political-military thriller genre. The artwork feels like a rinse-and-repeat scenario, featuring either a plane, helicopter, boat, truck, or some photoshopped vehicle action scene. Honestly, the covers are tedious, generic, and lack creativity. I had a copy of Line of Demarcation for weeks, yet every time I glanced at the cover art, I found myself reluctant to read it. Sure, helicopters are cool, but this one is as bland as they come.

So, what’s the book about? In a nutshell, bad guys are threatening the world, and the good guys—Jack Ryan Jr. and his team—have to swoop in to save the day. Sound familiar? That’s because I feel like I’ve encountered this same plot countless times before… oh, wait, I have! LOL! I read a lot, maybe too much, and that’s why this genre feels increasingly predictable and a bit stale to me.

M.P. Woodward, who previously wrote Shadow State, is back to pen Line of Demarcation. He brings solid credentials, having served for a decade as a U.S. Naval intelligence officer before transitioning to a career in tech and streaming media. However, he lacks the knack for detailed military jargon that Tom Clancy possessed. But let's be real, I am inevitably comparing the writing to Clancy’s level. Clancy was a one-of-a-kind author whose work could never be replicated. My approach is to judge each new book in Clancy’s universe on its own merits.

Surprisingly, Line of Demarcation turned out better than I anticipated; it may not be a five-star read, but it had enough twists that kept me flipping the pages. The writing flowed well, and I was never bored for a moment. There’s a sprinkling of technical jargon—nothing overwhelming—just enough to please the die-hard Tom Clancy fans. Were there errors in the jargon? I’m not the best person to ask. My military knowledge mainly comes from what I read, and I certainly don’t have the time to fact-check everything. I did, however, spot a few geographic mistakes. What happened there?

Were there some clichéd moments? Absolutely. With thirteen installments in, I expected a few of those to pop up. Luckily, they managed to avoid being campy or cringe-worthy. Was it predictable? Not quite. There were a few plot points that caught me off guard, or at least I didn’t see them coming right away.

Overall, Line of Demarcation was an engaging read. While it might not be perfect, the story had enough substance to keep my interest right up to the end.

What is it about the striking image of a military boat on a book cover that instantly sends a rush of adrenaline through me? There's something inherently thrilling about the connotations of power, strategy, and high-stakes conflict that draws me in.

[Review] — Clive Cussler's GHOST SOLDIER is an Entertaining Thriller Despite Many Flaws

Clive Cussler, the #1 New York Times bestselling author, had his adventure and sea thrillers continue to hit bookshelves long after he died in 2020. While this isn't a ghostwriting situation, other writers were hired to continue Cussler's series, with their names appearing on the covers to credit their work. The latest addition is GHOST SOLDIER, the newest installment in the OREGON FILES series, written by Mike Maden. Maden is known for his DRONE series, four of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Jr. thrillers, as well as Clive Cussler's Hellburner and Fire Strike.

[Review] — "TWISTERS" is a Mindless, Entertaining Popcorn Blockbuster

TWISTERS (PG-13; 122 minutes), the summer's unexpected box-office blockbuster, is now available for rent or purchase on digital platforms from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Recipient of an A- CinemaScore and a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the "hard-hitting disaster spectacle" (Impulse Gamer) has made history as the biggest opening for a disaster film ever. Exclusively available for purchase from select nationwide retailers, such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home (formerly known as Vudu), Comcast Xfinity, Cox, and Microsoft Movies & TV, is the all-American action-packed adventure with a never-before-seen gag reel and deleted scenes.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung Munyurangabo and written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant)—based on a story by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick)—TWISTERS is a standalone sequel to the classic 1996 disaster film TWISTER. Standalone means an in-name-only sequel with zero connections to the original. There are no returning characters and no name drops; only a similar plot with updated technology with a brand-new cast: Glen Powell (Anyone But You, Top Gun: Maverick), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where The Crawdads Sing, Fresh), David Corenswet (Pearl, “The Politician”), Anthony Ramos (In The Heights, Hamilton), and Brandon Perea (Nope).

The protagonist of this quasi-reboot is Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who gave up pursuing tornadoes across the Oklahoma prairies to safely study them on screens in New York City following a tragic tornado experience. Kate is drawn back to the field by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) and a once-in-a-lifetime scientific chance, where she meets Tyler (Glen Powell), a charming daredevil and self-proclaimed tornado wrangler whose appetite for tornado-tracking escapades has made him a social media sensation. As the storm season increases with horrific occurrences unlike anything before, Kate and Tyler realize they must work together to tame and survive an unprecedented outbreak of destructive tornadoes.

The original TWISTER is what I would describe as a "summer blockbuster," it has a special place in my heart because I was a loner midwest teen when it hit theaters in 1996. I was unimpressed when I saw the 30-second TV spot for TWISTERS during the Super Bowl LVIII and automatically labeled the film a "flop." To my surprise—and many others—TWISTERS received generally positive reviews from mainstream critics and grossed $81.3 million during its opening weekend. It's now surpassed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office.

TWISTERS is surprisingly better than expected, though you can see the best thrills in the trailers. The actors do their best with their two-dimensional characters. The plot is as thin as possible, but I imagine disaster movie fans want to see less story and more destruction. And there's plenty of destruction, but the CGI effects were underwhelming, only saved by the outstanding sound effects.

Overall, TWISTERS is a mindless, entertaining popcorn blockbuster. Is it flawed? Yep! Enjoyable? Sure! ╌★★★★✰
