Discover the New Live-Action Series 'TESTAMENT' - All Episodes Available for Angel Guild Members

TESTAMENT
Angel Studios, 2025
★★★★☆

The new live-action series TESTAMENT is now available for streaming on Angel.com and the Angel App, accessible to all Angel Guild members. All eight episodes of the first season are ready for you to watch and enjoy.

TESTAMENT offers a reimagined take on The Book of Acts set in an alternate modern era. A miraculous resurrection ignites a movement that overturns the status quo, spreading hope amidst turmoil. As the followers risk everything to share the good news, the Temple strives to silence them before the oppressive Imperium regime takes action. However, public miracles, hidden secrets, and divided loyalties compel both sides to grapple with the true price of their choices. This compelling live-action series will challenge you, touch your heart, and prompt you to rethink what it means to truly follow Jesus.

I’m pressed for time this week, so I'll focus on reviewing the first episode, titled "Something Old," which runs for nearly 48 minutes. The story unfolds in a modern-day dystopian District of Salem, governed by the Roman Imperium, led by Governor Pilate and his Temple Guards, who don striking red armored uniforms reminiscent of the Praetorian Guard in the latest Star Wars films. The episode takes place after the arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. As news of the resurrection spreads among the populace, the apostles James, John, Peter, and others begin to proclaim this miraculous event. In response, the Roman Imperium dismisses it as a mere rumor and sets out to dissuade the public from believing.

The production budget seems to be on the lower side, evident in the numerous outdoor shots featuring large crowds of extras. The main cast consists of relatively unknown actors; the performances ranged from decent to merely tolerable, lacking any standout talent. The opening credits, clearly influenced by Game of Thrones, carry an oddly supernatural tone. While the theme score is intriguing, it also feels akin to something from Game of Thrones.

Overall, I found TESTAMENT's first episode to be quite engaging; it packs in a lot of world-building and character development in just under fifty minutes. The dystopian backdrop might deter some viewers, though I didn’t mind it at all. This series isn’t suitable for younger children; I’d recommend it more for older teenagers and adults. I suggest giving at least the first episode a shot.

Watch TESTAMENT now on Angel.com or download the Angel App on iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, and other major platforms.

[Review] — "TWISTERS" is a Mindless, Entertaining Popcorn Blockbuster

TWISTERS (PG-13; 122 minutes), the summer's unexpected box-office blockbuster, is now available for rent or purchase on digital platforms from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Recipient of an A- CinemaScore and a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the "hard-hitting disaster spectacle" (Impulse Gamer) has made history as the biggest opening for a disaster film ever. Exclusively available for purchase from select nationwide retailers, such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home (formerly known as Vudu), Comcast Xfinity, Cox, and Microsoft Movies & TV, is the all-American action-packed adventure with a never-before-seen gag reel and deleted scenes.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung Munyurangabo and written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant)—based on a story by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick)—TWISTERS is a standalone sequel to the classic 1996 disaster film TWISTER. Standalone means an in-name-only sequel with zero connections to the original. There are no returning characters and no name drops; only a similar plot with updated technology with a brand-new cast: Glen Powell (Anyone But YouTop Gun: Maverick), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where The Crawdads SingFresh), David Corenswet (Pearl, “The Politician”), Anthony Ramos (In The HeightsHamilton), and Brandon Perea (Nope).

The protagonist of this quasi-reboot is Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who gave up pursuing tornadoes across the Oklahoma prairies to safely study them on screens in New York City following a tragic tornado experience. Kate is drawn back to the field by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) and a once-in-a-lifetime scientific chance, where she meets Tyler (Glen Powell), a charming daredevil and self-proclaimed tornado wrangler whose appetite for tornado-tracking escapades has made him a social media sensation. As the storm season increases with horrific occurrences unlike anything before, Kate and Tyler realize they must work together to tame and survive an unprecedented outbreak of destructive tornadoes.

The original TWISTER is what I would describe as a "summer blockbuster," it has a special place in my heart because I was a loner midwest teen when it hit theaters in 1996. I was unimpressed when I saw the 30-second TV spot for TWISTERS during the Super Bowl LVIII and automatically labeled the film a "flop." To my surprise—and many others—TWISTERS received generally positive reviews from mainstream critics and grossed $81.3 million during its opening weekend. It's now surpassed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office.

TWISTERS is surprisingly better than expected, though you can see the best thrills in the trailers. The actors do their best with their two-dimensional characters. The plot is as thin as possible, but I imagine disaster movie fans want to see less story and more destruction. And there's plenty of destruction, but the CGI effects were underwhelming, only saved by the outstanding sound effects.

Overall, TWISTERS is a mindless, entertaining popcorn blockbuster. Is it flawed? Yep! Enjoyable? Sure! ╌★★★★✰

Review - The Restoration Series: Jonathan's Walk

Available today to stream is brand-new 5-part documentary series "The Restoration Series: Jonathan's Walk." Presented by Prison Fellowship, "The Restoration Series," follows the lives of men and women who have been part of the in-prison program, The Academy, which tackles recidivism - the tendency of a criminal to reoffend.

"Jonathan's Walk" centers around Jonathan, a man who has spent the last 15 years in prison. He's now getting ready to be released on parole and reenter society. During his time in prison, Jonathan has missed out on many family milestones, including his daughter's first day of school, so, of course he has been looking forward to leaving prison.

Transition back into the community isn't an easy thing to accomplish, so the odds are against Jonathan. Over half of ex-prisoners end up returning to prison within two years of their release. With his wife by his side, Jonathan is determined to become a better man.

You can signup and watch the series at: www.prisonfellowship.org/restorationseries
