Sunday Post: 9/1/19

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Evening, Everyone!

What Am I Currently Reading?

The last two weeks haven't been the best for me due to my bad allergies which I blame on the rainy weather. I wish autumn would hurry up and get here as my allergies are always better in the Fall. Anyway, I'm currently reading The Witch Port Video Game by Leonard Bassed. It's a 106-page novella with tiny lettering. I'll be reviewing it later in the month for a Book Blog Tour. Then I'll probably be reading Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin.

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Evening, Everyone!

What Am I Currently Reading?

I have a lot reading on my plate this week. I'm will be finishing up Stranger Things: Suspicious Minds tomorrow and then I'll either start reading Buckskin or Summer's Promise. The latter title is for a book tour that start's tomorrow. I'll planning on posting my review on Thursday. I have a Jude Deveraux book on my Kindle that needs to be read. Then I have 13 horror novels to read this month. I would like to begin reading a book per day starting on Thursday. I'll be posting reviews for the horror titles starting on Oct. 19th (next Saturday).

In The Mail

The only thing review-related in the mail last week were the two Blu-ray Steelbooks - Ultra Q: The Complete Series and Ultraman: The Complete Series - from Mill Creek Entertainment. These are Japanese "kaiju" series from the 1960s. Ultra Q was shot in black & white and features many "redressings" of monsters from the early Godzilla films. Ultraman is sorta sequel/spinoff about an alien warrior who accidentally collides with a Jet piloted by Hayata while battling a monster. The two merge together to become Ultraman. I'm planning on posting reviews for these on Tuesday, which is the day they're being released.

To Merch, or not to Merch?

When did bloggers and vloggers offer their own merchandise?

Not unless you're a celebrity or connected to a news organization, it’s hard for a regular person to monetize their blog, vlog, or YouTube channel and make a living off of it. I have been noticing bloggers and vloggers are selling their own merch (merchandise), such as t-shirts, sweaters, socks, mugs, pillows, cell phone cases, stickers, and pins. The list keeps going on and on!

I am taking a wild guess that affiliates and advertisers aren’t paying what they used to, and, now, they're finding more creative ways to make some extra cash. The merch they’re selling to their readers/viewers all feature their logos, so it’s just another way for them to advertise their blog or channel.

About the Book

What happens when the line between fiction and reality blurs?

All Camille Monroe wants is a quiet place to work on her novel. Hoping for inspiration, she retreats to a cabin in Asheville, with only her dog Brody as company.

Leah Strauss thought the summer after high school graduation would be amazing, but when her boyfriend Vincent suffers an untimely loss, her dream of the perfect summer is destroyed. Attempting to cheer up Vincent, Leah’s twin sister Ava and her boyfriend Noah join them on a road trip.

When a snowstorm strikes the mountains while Leah and her friends are hiking, they struggle to find their campsite. After becoming lost in the woods, they stumble across a cabin and seek shelter from the storm.

As the days pass, the guests feel increasingly unsafe in the stranger’s cabin. Camille seems to know all their secrets, and she doesn’t want them to leave. Who is this dangerous writer and what does she want from them? Their biggest problem quickly becomes escaping the cabin alive.

Tropes: Snowstorm, locked room mystery, cabin in the woods, 80s book, magical/supernatural powers.

Content warnings: alcoholism, suicide, swearing, murder.

My Review

"THESE DEADLY WORDS" is written in a creepy 80s horror film style, complete with a "cabin in the woods" location. The author does an excellent job of introducing the characters, establishing the narrative, and building tension. There's an "Evil Dead" feel here, at least with the setting, which features camping teenagers forced to seek refuge in a cabin after a snowfall. Camille, the cabin's owner, appears charming at first, but then things take a twisted turn in a Stephen King-like approach.

Everyone knows I enjoy horror, especially stories with an old-school feel, so "THESE DEADLY WORDS" was right down my lane. It's hardly a "perfect read," but there are enough surprises to keep you turning the pages. ╌★★★★✰

Midnight Horror Review: Mindwarp & Brainscan (SCI-FI Double Feature)

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
There was nothing better to do on a stormy night than to stay up late and watch a double feature that consisted of two low-budget 1990s' horror gems - Mindwarp and Brainscan!

These flicks will be arriving on a Sci-Fi Double Feature Blu-ray ($19.98) on June 4th from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Directed by Steve Barnett, Mindwarp (1992; R; 96 minutes) was the first of three movies in the early 1990s produced by Fangoria Films. Set in the year 2037, the film takes place in a world where the ozone layer has mostly been destroyed. There are highly radioactive areas called Death Zones, which are filled with mutated cannibalistic Crawlers and a few Outworlders, humans who haven't been affected by the radiation. Then there are the Dreamers, a group of humans who live in a computer controlled biosphere called the Inworld. The Dreamers have implants on the back of their necks that lets them plug into a virtual reality world where they can live out their wildest fantasies.

After rejecting the virtual reality from within her own mind, a young woman, Judy (played by Marta Martin) is kicked out of the Inworld and tossed into the Death Zones. Upon arriving she is attacked by a Crawler, but luckily for her she is rescued by an Outworlder named Stove (played by the legendary B-movie man Bruce Campbell). Sparks fly rather quickly between the two, but the romance is cut short when more Crawlers attack; which leads to Judy being kidnapped by the Seer (played by the late great horror icon Angus Scrimm) and of course Stove has to rescue her again.

Directed by John Flynn, Brainscan (1994; R; 96 minutes) centers around Michael Brower (played by Edward Furlong), a sixteen-year-old who's basically been taking care of himself ever since his mother was killed in a car accident several years prior. The accident also resulted in permanent leg damage for him. Now as a teenager, Michael has a become a big horror and video game nerd. After hearing about the new mind-bending video game Brainscan, he eagerly orders the first game disc.

While at first glance Brainscan looks like a ultra-realistic POV slasher game, Michael quickly learns the game is actually real. And it's possible Michael might have committed real-life murders.

Why doesn't Michael just quit the game?

Well, the game is controlled by a demon called The Trickster (played by T. Ryder Smith), and a player cannot quit the game. The game has to be played out to the very bloody end!

Sunday Post: December 23, 2018

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Merry Christmas!

What am I currently reading?

I haven't had very much free time to read lately due to my grandmother being in the hospital, a few personal life issues that I don't have time to discuss here, and of course getting ready for Christmas has stressed me out.

I'm planning on finishing the book His Promise by Shelley Shepard Gray today, which is a Christmas themed Amish story. I'll probably post my review on Christmas Day.

Last Monday, I had received The Predator 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, which arrived by UPS a little damaged. The discs aren't damaged, but the slipcover has a crease and a hole in it. It's no big deal to me, as I didn't purchase it. The studio has sent the movie to me to review. (Read my review here!)

I also received The Shield: The Complete Series 18-disc Blu-ray set from Mill Creek Entertainment. It's one of the best television series releases I have ever seen. I'll be posting my review for it sometime today.

Sunday Post - At Death's Door, Under A Full Moon, and The Unwilling

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Evening, Everyone!

What Am I Reading?

I didn’t post last week’s Sunday Post because I was sick with a cold sore, and it’s also why there has been a lack of reviews on this blog. Hopefully, I can get back in the groove of things soon, as I have several reviews planned.

Sunday Post / It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by The Book Date.

Good Morning, Everyone!

What Am I Currently Reading?

Here's a little fun fact for everyone: I used to be a Trekker! I grew up watching reruns of the original series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. Then I quickly left the franchise right after the campy Voyager series debuted in the mid-1990s. While I would no longer consider myself a Trekker by any means, I do occasionally watch an episode or two of the old series on Netflix. This year, I've found myself in a Star Trek mood after watching the first season of Star Trek: Discovery (I don't recommend it to anyone!), which resulted in me buying a few $.99 old Star Trek tie-in eBook. As you can see from the photo above I'm going to be reading Star Trek: The Captain's Oath by Christopher L. Bennett, which I'd received a review copy from Gallery Books just a few days ago. Pockets Books used to publish the Star Trek books, but this year Gallery Books took over the franchise. "The Captain's Oath" looks like a fun read.

Next, I'm planning on reading The Son by Philip Meyer, which is a title I'd mentioned about in last week's post. Originally, I wanted to read it at the end of last week, but I ended up reading an eBook instead.

Sunday Post - Gaby, Halloween Cards, and the Sunshine Girl

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

RIP Gaby Dec. 26, 2007 - July 18, 2020

I hope everyone has had a better week than me.

My elderly cat, Gaby, suddenly turned for worse. She was fully grown (3 or 4 years old?) when she came into my home on December 26, 2007. For the past six months, her health has gone downhill. She could no longer climb downstairs to use the litter box, so I had to move it closer to her bed. She had dementia. She would get confused when trying to locate her food dish, even when it was right under her nose. When she had an issue climbing into the litter box, I had to cut down two of the sides and cover the edges with duct tape. Then she could easily step in and out of the litter box.

On Tuesday night, Gaby was acting like her usual self. The following morning, she couldn’t step out of her bed without falling and she refused to eat anything. I decided it was time to have her put to sleep. I called the vet, but couldn’t get an appointment until July 22nd. I checked with other veterinarians in the area, but they’re booked until August. This is all because of the damn COVID-19 virus! The social distancing guidelines have caused veterinarians to fall behind.

Gaby passed away at 3:30 AM on Saturday. Since Wednesday, I have gone without sleep to stay by her side and take care of her. I buried Gaby next to her younger adopted brother, Fred, a fat Tabby cat who died in 2014.

Midnight Horror Review: Hostel & Hostel Part II: Horror Double Feature

MILL CREEK ENT. * AMAZON
I watch many different genres of horror including the controversial "torture porn," which is what modern "splatter films" are now called. The 2005 film Hostel was the first to be labeled "torture porn," though the new genre trend really started in 2004 with the original Saw. These types of films rely less on horror and more on gore.

Yesterday, Mill Creek Entertainment released the Horror Double Feature Blu-ray + DVD set ($14.98) featuring the director's  cut of Hostel and its sequel Hostel Part II (unrated director's cut). The only special feature on the two-disc set is an "Alternate Director's Cut Ending," which is only included on the DVD.

Presented by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Eli Roth, Hostel (2005; 94 minutes) centers on two American tourist, Paxton and Josh, (played by Jay Hernandez and Derek Richardson) backpacking across Europe with their Icelandic pal Óli (played by Eyþór Guðjónsson). They travel to Amsterdam, where the trio have only have two things on their minds - parting and women. Shortly after arriving, they are told if they want to have a good time, then they need to go to the hostel in Slovakia, which is exactly what they do. Unfortunately, that was their biggest mistake. Unknowingly to them, Slovakia is home to a secret elite hunting group, where tourist are kidnapped and are given to the rich to be tortured to death.

Eli Roth returned to write and direct Hostel Part II (2007; 95 minutes). The sequel centers on three American art students, Beth, Whitney, and Lorna (played by Lauren German, Bijou Phillips, and Heather Matarazzo) traveling to Slovakia for a vacation, but shortly upon arriving they are kidnapped the same "hunting" group from the first movie and are sold off to be tortured by the wealthy.

Sunday Post & It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @  Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by The Book Date.

Good Morning, Everyone!

I can't believe I'm writing a post early on a Monday morning!

FYI: I'm kinda like Garfield - I hate Mondays!

Anyway, as you can tell I'm back to combining my Sunday Post with my It's Monday! What Are You Reading? post. Why is this? Well, last week I didn't get around to posting my Sunday Post and yesterday I was just to lazy to do anything. Therefore, this week I'm shoving two posts into one.

What Am I Currently Reading?

How did my reading go last week? To tell you the truth - not very good. Did I finish reading IT? Nope!

However, I did read a few pages over the weekend and I'm now on page 535. As you can probably tell, I'm in no hurry to read IT. It's not like I have a review deadline for it, though I would like to post a review sometime during the first week of September.

Additionally, I did listen to an audiobook Wake the Dead by Stacey Rourke yesterday afternoon.

I'll be reviewing it sometime this week. Maybe even today! My reading agenda for this week is to once again finish reading IT. Plus, I'll be listening to the audiobook The Unlucky Ones by Stacey Marie Brown.

Nearly two weeks ago, I received the novella The Witch Port Video Game by Leonard Bassed. I will be reviewing the title in September for a book tour. On the exact same day, I received The Inn by James Patterson & Candice Fox. Now the latter isn't for review purposes as I had pre-ordered a few days prior to its release. However, whenever I get around to reading it, I'll most likely post a review for it.
