The rum was Flor de Caña 18 and the taste of it made him close his eyes for a happy second, tasting it off Lupe's mouth from moons ago as though she were here in this moment.

Summer Reads: A Justified Murder by Jude Deveraux

AMAZON
Welcome to my first Summer Reads post of the 2019! And, yes, I'm well aware it's not official summer according the calendar, but the Mother Nature clearly has a different opinion on the matter.

Yesterday morning, I finished reading the novel A Justified Murder, which is the second installment in the new A Medlar Mystery series that started with last year's A Willing Murder. (Read my review here!) The series reminds me of the old murder mystery television series, such as Murder, She Wrote, Columbo, and Monk, but instead of a single main character there are three - novelist Sara Medlar, her niece Kate, and her unofficially adopted grandson, Jack Wyatt.

Set once again in the small town of Lachlan, Florida, the detective trio find themselves investigating the bizarre death of Janet Beeson, an elderly woman who had been shot, stabbed, and poisoned!

Sara only became involved in the case after the county sheriff asked her to take photos of the crime scene, and of course she brought along Kate and Jack. One would think they would just let the authorities investigate the murder, but after getting a taste of the crime fighting last year, the trio is itching to solve another mystery; despite the little fact that they originally vowed not to get involved in the first place.

I don't want to spoil too much of the plot, but lets just say the murder is linked to an old kidnapping case.

Now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is the racing drama Trading Paint ($22.98; R; 87 minutes). Directed by Karzan Kader, the film stars John Travolta, Toby Sebastian, Shania Twain, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, Michael Madsen, and Kevin Dunn. There are no special features or bonus extras.

The film mostly centers around the estranged relationship between the dirt racing father and son duo, Sam and Cam (played by John Travolta and Toby Sebastian). Sam is a former dirt racer who's a big racing legend in his hometown. His racing rival is Linsky (played by Michael Madsen), a local car dealer owner, who convinces Cam to join his racing team.

Devastated (and mostly pissed off), Sam puts himself back into the driver seat to race against his son and find a way to mend their broken relationship.

Monday Morning Madness: June 3, 2019

There's nothing better to help kickstart a Monday morning than drinking a cup of coffee - or in my case several cups of caffeine heavenly bliss. And I guess the extra energy could explain why I'm writing a Monday Morning Madness post, which is something I haven't done in quite a long time.

Did anyone watch NOS4A2 on AMC last night?

If you weren't already aware, I spent the last few weeks reading NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (read my review here), so I was pretty hyped about the series. Now after watching the first episode, I have mixed feelings about the series. I have nothing against the cast and everyone's acting is fine, but I don't like the changes the scriptwriters and producers have already made with the story. Despite my negative feelings, I'm going to keep watching and see how it turns out.

Of course I had to watch the season premiere of Fear the Walking Dead, which was action-packed and just plain fun to watch! FYI: I loved the fourth season and disliked the majority of the first three seasons.

I've also been watching The Spanish Princess on STARZ. It's somewhat of a spinoff sequel to The White Queen and The White Princess miniseries, which are all based on the works by author Philippa Gregory. Actually, I believe The Spanish Princess is based on two novels, The Constant Princess and The King's Curse. Let's just say this third miniseries has been a big disappointment so far with some of the worst acting ever put to screen! At least there are only 3 episodes left.

Good Morning, Everyone!

Well, there were a few scares this week beginning with a EF4 tornado that tragically hit Kansas and then touched down in a neighboring county here in Missouri. The tornado sirens were a blazing in my town nearly ten minutes after the tornado warning was issued by the National Weather Service. Yeah, I believe my town has a communication problem! Luckily, the storm skipped over my town. It didn't even rain!

The second scare came yesterday when my mother found my grandmother unresponsive at the nursing home. She called for a nurse, who believed my grandmother had a stroke.

It turns out my grandmother did have a very light stroke and she was life-flighted to St. Luke's Hospital in the city. She's recovering just fine; talking and acting like her normal self. She's expected to be released from the hospital sometime today.

Update: My grandmother hasn't been released from the hospital yet. The doctors ran a few more tests on her yesterday. They're trying to figure out why she had the stroke.

What Am I Currently Reading?

No, you're not seeing déjà vu! And, yes, I've already featured A Justified Murder by Jude Deveraux on this blog several weeks ago, but I got slightly distracted and I had to put the book aside for a bit. Since I've finally finished reading NOS4A2, I now have time to read A Justified Murder, which I'm going to pick up exactly where I stopped on page 35.

Midnight Horror Review: NOS4A2 by Joe Hill

AMAZON
I have a bad habit of attempting to read books that are soon to be adapted as a movie or television series but never actually doing it. Well, I guess I finally broke my procrastinating streak because I pushed myself to read the epic horror novel NOS4A2 by Joe Hill (a.k.a. Stephen King's son) before the series debut's tomorrow night.

If you've ever watched AMC recently, then you would've seen the countless teasers for the NOS4A2 series; which prompt me to seek out the novel at my local library. The novel is nearly 800 pages, so it took me a little bit longer to read it than I'd originally anticipated. The good news is that at least I got it finished before the series starts.

The novel begins in 2008 at a hospital where a nurse has a bizarre encounter with the supposedly comatose Charles Manx, a child abductor, and then it quickly flashes back to 1986 where us readers are first introduced to a young Victoria "Vic" McQueen, the heroine of this story. She has the ability to ride her bicycle through the Shorter Way Bridge, which can take her to anything her heart is seeking.

Vic isn't the only one who has the ability to use the Shorter Way Bridge. Charlie Manx can drive  "The Wraith" Rolls-Royce on the Bridge. He kidnaps children from troubled homes and takes them to a place called "Christmasland," where they can be happy forever. Assisting Manx is a psychotic chemical planet worker named Bing, who's in charge of getting rid of the children's parents.

In 1996, a now teenager Vic encounters Manx and barely escapes thanks to Lou Carmody, a motorcycle rider. She eventually get romantically involved with Lou and later gives birth to his son, Wayne. Fast Forward to 2012, where Vic must once again take a ride on the Shorter Way Bridge in the attempt to rescue her son who has been kidnapped by Manx.

This week marked the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release of the drama-thriller A Vigilante ($22.98; R; 91 minutes). Written and directed by Sarah Daggar-Nickson, the film first premiered at South by Southwest in 2018. Saban Films picked up the U.S. distribution rights and released the film earlier this year.

The film stars Olivia Wilde as Sadie, a woman who had barely escaped the wrath of her abusive husband (played by Morgan Spector). Unfortunately, her young son was killed during the aftermath. Since that  night, her husband has went off the grid and is on the run from the authorities.

Still grieving and broken, Sadie teaches herself boxing, martial arts, and other survival skills. She uses these new abilities to help protect other battered women and abused children.

The only Special Feature on the Blu-ray is the featurette Catharsis: Creating A Vigilante. The Blu-ray does come with a DVD and a Digital code.

Midnight Horror Review: Mindwarp & Brainscan (SCI-FI Double Feature)

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
There was nothing better to do on a stormy night than to stay up late and watch a double feature that consisted of two low-budget 1990s' horror gems - Mindwarp and Brainscan!

These flicks will be arriving on a Sci-Fi Double Feature Blu-ray ($19.98) on June 4th from Mill Creek Entertainment.

Directed by Steve Barnett, Mindwarp (1992; R; 96 minutes) was the first of three movies in the early 1990s produced by Fangoria Films. Set in the year 2037, the film takes place in a world where the ozone layer has mostly been destroyed. There are highly radioactive areas called Death Zones, which are filled with mutated cannibalistic Crawlers and a few Outworlders, humans who haven't been affected by the radiation. Then there are the Dreamers, a group of humans who live in a computer controlled biosphere called the Inworld. The Dreamers have implants on the back of their necks that lets them plug into a virtual reality world where they can live out their wildest fantasies.

After rejecting the virtual reality from within her own mind, a young woman, Judy (played by Marta Martin) is kicked out of the Inworld and tossed into the Death Zones. Upon arriving she is attacked by a Crawler, but luckily for her she is rescued by an Outworlder named Stove (played by the legendary B-movie man Bruce Campbell). Sparks fly rather quickly between the two, but the romance is cut short when more Crawlers attack; which leads to Judy being kidnapped by the Seer (played by the late great horror icon Angus Scrimm) and of course Stove has to rescue her again.

Directed by John Flynn, Brainscan (1994; R; 96 minutes) centers around Michael Brower (played by Edward Furlong), a sixteen-year-old who's basically been taking care of himself ever since his mother was killed in a car accident several years prior. The accident also resulted in permanent leg damage for him. Now as a teenager, Michael has a become a big horror and video game nerd. After hearing about the new mind-bending video game Brainscan, he eagerly orders the first game disc.

While at first glance Brainscan looks like a ultra-realistic POV slasher game, Michael quickly learns the game is actually real. And it's possible Michael might have committed real-life murders.

Why doesn't Michael just quit the game?

Well, the game is controlled by a demon called The Trickster (played by T. Ryder Smith), and a player cannot quit the game. The game has to be played out to the very bloody end!

Blu-Ray Review: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

AMAZON
After being a little upset at the way the fantasy drama Game of Thrones ended last Sunday, I ended up spending my Memorial Day evening watching a different (& better) dragon tale - How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (PG; 104 minutes), which landed on Blu-ray and DVD last week from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

The Hidden World is the final chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, which is based on the children book series of the same name by Cressida Cowell. Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the film features the talented voice cast of Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, F. Murray Abraham , Kit Harington, Craig Ferguson, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Picking up one year after the second film, Hiccup, Toothless, the other dragon-riders, and their entire Viking village must go on a journey to find a new home after being threatened by the legendary dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly and his army of minions (and a few evil dragons). At Grimmel's disposal is a female Light Fury who easily captures Toothless's heart and sets the stage for the the dragon-riders' final battle.

Bonus Features include:
  • Alternate Opening with Intro by Writer/Director Dean DeBlois
  • DreamWorks Shorts:
    • Bilby – Directed by Liron Topaz, Pierre Perifel and JP Sans; produced by Jeff Hermann and Kelly Cooney Cilella. Threatened daily by the deadly residents and harsh environment of Australia’s Outback, a lonesome Bilby finds himself an unwitting protector, and unexpected friend, to a helpless (and quite adorable) baby bird.
    • Bird Karma – Directed by William Salazar and produced by Jeff Hermann, the beautifully artistic 2D short film Bird Karma tells a delightfully lyrical and fully unexpected tale of a long-legged bird’s journey of blissful joy, inescapable greed and the accidental discovery of the consequences when too much is not enough.
  • Deleted Scenes with Intros by Writer/Director Dean DeBlois
  • How to Voice Your Viking – Go behind the scenes with the cast as they record the Viking voices of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD.
  • Creating an Epic Dragon Tale – Discover what filmmakers learned while crafting this epic dragon trilogy.
  • How I Learned from Dragons – The diverse cast of characters reveal why they think the dragon trilogy is so special.
  • Brave Wilderness Presents: Nature + Dragons = Awesome – Join Coyote Peterson, host of Brave Wilderness, as he explores what it takes to make the dragon’s characters come to life.
  • The Dragon Sheep Chronicles – Protecting sheep from the dragons of Berk is no easy task but Hiccup has a plan.
  • A Deck of Dragons – Observe four new dragons as Fishlegs unveils his original deck of dragon trading cards.
  • Growing Up with Dragons – After years of being with these characters, hear the lasting effects of the dragon trilogy from the filmmaker’s perspective.
  • The Evolving Character Design of Dragons – Cast and crew reveal what it was like to evolve not only the characters of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD, but themselves as well.
  • Drawing Dragons – Get a glimpse of what goes in to designing a DreamWorks dragon.

Spring Reads: The Lost Night by Andrea Bartz

AMAZON
Have you ever read a new book without realizing there was a lot of media buzz around it?

Well, that's the exactly what happened to me with the thriller The Lost Night by Andrea Bartz, which was published by Crown Publishers earlier this year. Originally, I had stumble upon the title in the "upcoming" books section on the Barnes & Noble website. After reading the blurb, I became interested in reading the book. It wasn't until after I finished reading it that I learned about the possible "limited series" adaptation. When I say "possible," I'm referring to little fact that there has been no new news about the rumored series since February.

The book centers around Lindsay, a journalist who's trying to unravel the mystery of why her friend Edie committed suicide in 2009. After talking to their friends, Lindsay realizes her memory of the night Edie died is mostly a blur. As she tries to put the pieces of that fatal night back together, she shockingly discovers evidence that suggests Edie was actually murdered.
