Late Night Rambling: Books and Horror Flicks!

My original plans for tonight was to watch The Flash on the CW, followed by The Curse of Oak Island on the History Channel, and then go to bed early. Well, I must have gotten a second wind, as I ended up doing a bit of cleaning in the bedroom, made a cup of coffee, and I'm now listening to an Ella Henderson album while I'm writing this post.

I'm finding it hard to believe that March is almost here. 2018 is already going by too fast, and I haven't even gotten the things I wanted to do done. While I have put a huge dent in my needs-to-be-read piles, there are a few books I still need to write reviews for. If everything goes as planned, I should start on those reviews sometime tomorrow. Also, I'll be posting my review for House of Secrets by V.C. Andrews sometime this week. It took me a bit longer to read this one, but I'm finished with it. Next, I'll be reading Goosebumps: Please Do Not Feed The Weirdo by R.L. Stine. Then I'll start reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, which I received through the Blogging For Books program.

Hopefully, I'll have time to read two books that I had recently purchased on Amazon.com. These books are Murder On The Orient Express by Agatha Christie and The Sinner by Petra Hammesfahr. I almost picked up Murder On The Orient Express at Walmart last year about the same time the feature film was in theaters, but when I decided to buy it, it was sold out. Then I almost bought it at Barnes & Nobles earlier this month, but it was a little pricey there, so I just got it off of Amazon, where it was cheaper. Yes, I've seen the movie. Fox Home Entertainment had sent me the Blu-ray to review a day before it was released. It's been a really long time since I had received anything from Twentieth Century Fox (which is now owned by Disney), so I was surprised (and thrilled) to receive it. As for The Sinner, I had watched several episodes of the USA adaptation on On Demand last year, but Mediacom (the cable company) never put up the rest of the episodes. I ended up buying the DVD when it was released a few weeks. Anyhow, I had looked for the book last year, but never could find it. I never thought it about the book again until I was on Amazon ordering the Agatha Christie novel, so I decided to order it, too.

Disney nicely sent me the Blu-ray of Coco (which was released today). It's a cute movie. I should have my review for it posted tomorrow. Over the past few months, Mill Creek Entertainment has sent me several great DVD and Blu-ray titles. I spent a couple of nights last week binge watching Secrets and Lies: Season One DVD, a series that aired a few years ago ABC that I never got around to watching. There are only ten episodes, but the show is really addicting. I'll probably be writing my review for it in the next few days. Also, I need to write a review for Shadow Stalkers: 10 Terrifying Features DVD. Then I need to finish watching the Horseland: The Complete Series and Street Shark: The Complete Series DVDs. These two are cartoons, and I would like to post a review for at least one of them on Saturday morning. Well, see what happens!

Saturday Mornings: Procrastinating, Blogging, and Lawyers

*This is a sponsored post. All opinions are 100% mine.

It's only the 6th day of the year and I've already gotten a several things I wanted to get done done! Yes, this is includes working on my procrastination issues, which I have talked about on this blog several times. Exercising - well, that's a completely different story. Originally, I wanted to begin a new workout program on the 1st, then I told myself to start on the 2nd, and well, as you can probably guess, I keep talking myself out of it. Now, my plans are to begin a new workout program tomorrow morning.

What program am I going to start?

Who knows!

I haven't made that decision yet. I still have a subscription on Beachbody On Demand, so I will probably start one of their programs.

Anyhow, the Book Blogger Hop landing page has been updated with new questions for the entire year. I've brought back the thumbnail link widget, which costs $2.99 per month. While I prefer to use the free widget, it only allowed me to schedule future hops a month in advanced. I went ahead I got the subscription, so I can schedule the hop for the entire year, as there has been a few times where I just had forgotten to post the weekly hop on time. This way I won't have that problem this year. I have all the hop's posts set up as a 'drafts,' but I have only three months completed so far. I hoping to finish scheduling the rest of the posts over the weekend.

By the way, if you haven't noticed, this is a new weekly post called "Saturday Mornings," where I'll talk about anything and everything. While I'm writing this I'm listening to Nelly Furtado's album "The Ride" and drinking a cup of Green Mountain Coffee: Pumpkin Spice. I love this brand of coffee, but their K-Cups are extremely expensive. Luckily for me, I found a 18-count box on clearance at Walmart for under $4 yesterday.

Bookends #9: Goosebumps, Christmas Titles, and YouTube Channel!

Well, it's been awhile since my last Bookends post, which was back in July. The summer months were very busy for me, especially when I had to kick myself in the butt and started exercising again. Since August I have loss a total of 21.5 pounds (as of today), which mostly occurred after I changed my eating habits. Tomorrow, I begin week 7 of Beachbody's Insanity workout program. I have loss 12.5 of those 21.5 pounds since I started the program.

If you've been reading this blog for the last few weeks, then you would know I have fallen behind in reviewing books. Actually, I have about 20 already read books that are piled up waiting to be reviewed. This why I had recently began a new series of posts called "Review Catch Up Marathon." Hopefully, I can try to get these books reviewed by November 1st.

What am I currently reading?

I'm currently reading Goosebumps Slappyworld: I'm Slappy's Evil Twin. Hopefully, if everything goes as planned, I should have the book read and reviewed by late tonight.

What am I reading next?

Next, I'm reading Cars, Coffee, and a Badass Ninja Toilet by K.C. Hilton. I'll probably start reading it tomorrow. After that book, I'm planning on reading Haunted by James Patterson and James O. Born.

Revisiting The Blair Witch Project!

I'm starting to feel a little bit old after I realized that The Blair Witch Project is seventeen-years-old! The film was released to theaters in July 1999, about a month before I started my senior year of high school. I recall seeing tons of advertisements on television for it, as well as watching a fake documentary about the Blair Witch on the Sci-Fi Channel (now known as Syfy). I think I might have owned a couple of tie-in books that were released around that time.

Anyhow, I only watched the actual movie two or three times on VHS, and I had completely forgot about the movie until I had saw the advertisements for the belated sequel Blair Witch a few months ago.

Later, I stumbled upon the DVD for the original film for $5 at Walmart, and of course I purchased it to replace my old VHS copy. I didn't get around to actually watching the film until last night, which I viewed on my laptop.

While the 1980 horror flick Cannibal Holocaust was technically the first found footage horror film, The Blair Witch Project was the one that really kicked off a slew of copycats, including the popular Paranormal Activity franchise.

The Classic Science Fiction Novel "Battlefield Earth" Is Now Available To Download on Kindle for 99 Cents!

The classic science fiction novel "Battlefield Earth" written by L. Ron Hubbard is now available to purchase on Kindle for the first time from Galaxy Press. It's currently on sale for 99 cents on Amazon.com.

Battlefield Earth: A Saga Of The Year 3000 was first published in 1982 by St. Martin's Press. The original hardcover was over 750 pages and the original paperback was over 1,000 pages.

Written in a similar style of the pulp fiction stores that Hubbard had published throughout the '30s and '40s, the novel is pure science fiction.

Set in 3000 AD, the novel involves a world where a nine-foot-tall alien race from the planet planet Psychlo had invaded Earth over a thousand years ago and enslaved all the humans. Now a slave named Jonnie Goodboy Tyler plans on making a stand against the aliens and help free the human race.

Galaxy Press has also released the novel in large format paperback (trade paperback) and on an unabridged audio CD (over 50 hours); all of which features the new cover art design.

The Return of Tae Bo

I almost forgot about writing this week's post, so I'm listening to the last half of the new "Castle" episode while I'm writing this. Then a little bit later tonight I'll have do my late night workout, which will be last day of week six of the "Master's Hammer & Chisel" workout program. The last two weeks of the program starts tomorrow. I'm not for sure what I'm going to do after the program; though I'm considering doing the "Beast Body" workout program, which I already own the DVDs.

However, I need to add some more "cardio" into my weekly workouts as I'm not seeing any weight loss on the scales; though I have seen a little body fat loss around my chest and arms, but not so much around my love handles.

I lost a lot of weight a few years ago when I was doing Tae Bo workouts. Yes, I know Tae Bo is considered "old" and out of style to many, but the exercises are very intense and an easy way to get into shape. Sadly, things came up in my life, which I will not name here, and I didn't have time to exercise; resulting in some weight gain. When I eventually went back to Tae Bo, I started having issues with my knees/legs and my back, which was probably caused by the lack of exercise and the weight gain. I did a few Beachbody workouts last year and lost about ten pounds, but I took around five months off from exercising last fall and gained all the weight back.

My plan is to slowly start adding Tae Bo back into my workouts; probably starting tomorrow. Yes, I do have an arsenal of Tae Bo DVDs. Starting around 2008 or 2009, I would buy almost every new Tae Bo title that came out. I got most of the older titles on eBay over the years. During the time I wasn't doing Tae Bo, I was still keeping an eye out for new releases, but for some reason Anchor Bay quit releasing new ones. Then, Tae Bo Fitness updated their website and began producing new titles through their BG Star Productions, where you could only buy the new DVDs on their website. I was aware of the new titles, but I didn't purchase them because the DVDs were more than twice the price of what they used to be.

Reasons To Renovate Your Bathroom in 2016!

Renovating a bathroom is often one of the lowest chores on a person's to-do list. After all, bathroom renovations can often become messy, nasty jobs depending on how long its been since the bathroom was last renovated. However, there are numerous benefits associated with bathroom remodeling, particularly for those looking to sell their homes.

1. Increased value.

A standard bathroom renovation can be expensive. However, by simply replacing old features and adding in energy efficient toilets, baths, and sinks, you can improve the value of your home by $2000 or $3000 without breaking the bank. A new paint job can also help.

2. Save on energy costs.

Many homes are not nearly as energy efficient as they should be. Even when properly insulated, there are a number of steps a homeowner can take to improve the efficiency of their bathrooms at retaining temperature and power. The EPA estimates that energy efficient homes across the country save a total of 1.5 billion in energy costs and nearly 70 billion gallons of water each year through low-flow toilets and green LEDs.

Interesting Device Statistics: Times, They Are a Changin'

The world has changed dramatically over the past few decades. One of the biggest reasons for the change has been technological innovations. Technology such as the modern Internet, WiFi, broadband, wired networks, cell phones, smart phones, tablets, laptops, e-commerce, GPS, and numerous other innovations have changed the world into a digital world.

The Digital World

The evolution into a digital world now allows people do almost any daily task online. People can go online to shop, pay bills, communicate with friends, socialize, look for a mate, listen to music, look at a movie, watch the news, watch a sporting event, download media, and a variety of other things. Twenty years ago it would have been hard to imagine the things people are doing now with the use of modern technology.

Interesting Device Statistics

With the popularity of mobile tech, here are some statistics that are simply astonishing:

1. Roughly 6.8 billion people use mobile phones. Amazingly that is almost 90% of the World’s population.
2. 56% of Americans own a smartphone.
3. 34% of adults own a tablet device.

When Will Fall Get Here?

I know the first day of Fall won't start until September 23rd, but I just wish the weather will start cooling down. In my opinion, it's a bit to hot for this time of year. It's typically not this hot on my birthday (which was yesterday)! And normally I can smell the fall weather in the air by now (Yes, the Fall has a scent!)

As you can see, Fall is my favorite season. I don't know if it has something to do with the fall weather or the fact that Halloween is just around the corner. Note: Halloween is my favorite holiday.

Speaking of Allhalloween, I'll be putting up my post later today about this year's Halloween event on here called "Halloween Madness."

Monday Morning Madness #56: Please, No More Rain!

Yes, it's been awhile since I've written a Monday morning post; nearly two whole months. I guess I've just been too busy and have forgotten about it. Actually, I'm writing this post just after midnight as I want to make sure it goes live in the early morning hours.

If you live in the Midwest, like I do, then I bet you're sick and tired all the freakin' rain! The garage and basement (where my bedroom is) has flooded twice last week. No, the gutters weren't clogged. It just rained that much! I don't have a rain gauge, but I'm guessing the rain has been somewhere between 8-12 inches! While it was flooding, I was using a carpet cleaner to suck up all the water so it wouldn't to far beyond the garage. Once the rain finally quit, I used a garage broom to try to push the water down the driveway.

I've been running the dehumidifier on "high" and it has helped remove most of the rain smell. Unfortunately, I noticed that some water had gotten into my bedroom carpet on Friday night and it started to spread quickly. I tried my best to soak it up, but it was ruined. Therefore, I had to remove a big chuck of the carpet on Sunday afternoon. I'm planning on rising early today and finishing the job, which is going to be a big pain as I need to remove all the furniture.

Where's Friday? - Insanity, Gossip Girl & the End of April!

I can't believe it's already Thursday and that it's the last day in April!

Where did the time go?

Oh, I've actually been busy all week writing reviews for this blog and trying to wrap up my first month of Insanity Max:30. Actually, I have three more days and I'll be finished with month one. While I haven't dropped one single pound on the scales, I have noticed a difference around my arms and chest. I should have took my measurements for starting the workout program, but I didn't.

Let me correct myself, I didn't get too many reviews written as I keep hopping over to YouTube and watching music videos, such as The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm and Dave Matthews Violinist Boyd Tinsley Serenades Grand Central Terminal!

Computer Crashes & More Great Finds

Yep, it is another Saturday, which is supposed to be a day of rest...or is that supposed to be on Sunday. It doesn't matter as I have been busy today, on Saturday, writing a few reviews, and this was after running a few errands this morning.

Of course one of the errands was stopping by the thrift store and buying three book. Yeah, I already know that the last thing I need is another book, but I can't turn down a good bargain.

So, what books did I get?

Dead After Dark
by Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R. Ward, Susan Squires and Dianna Love

The Shadowed Onyx
by Nicole O'Dell

Fire in the Night
by Linda Byler

A Camera, Music and Old Spice!

While I attempted to list all my Christmas presents in this week's Monday Morning Madness, I forgot to mention a few other gifts that I received. My big present this year, and my favorite, was the Nikon Coolpix L830 Camera along with a bunch of essentials (SD cards, camera bag, etc.).

Another great gift of mine was a LIVE Sound Bar, not one of the expensive ones as it was purchased on Black Friday, but nevertheless it does work great at enhancing the sound on my 32 inch HD TV.

Of course I received three "geeky" t-shirts featuring M&M's characters, the Thundercats Logo and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I did already mention that these were "geeky" t-shirt, but it fits into my style. I also received Old Spice cologne, after shave and deodorant. In the past I have used Brute (which isn't sold in my area anymore) and AXE, which in my opinion this brand has lost its scent. Anyway, I'm going to give Old Spice a trying 2015!

While I don't typically buy my own presents, this year I did and it arrived on my doorsteps on Monday. It is one of those cheap Eclipse MP3 players. Yeah, I know I'm a little behind in technology, but I have been wanting one for awhile. Plus, I have plenty of music on my computer from Digital Copy downloads that come with every new music CD to put on the thing.

Where's Friday?

Do you remember back in our middle school days when you would rather skip Thursday and go straight to Fridays, as that afternoon would kickoff your weekend with no school?

That is the way I feel right now. After literally not sleeping a single minute during the night, I decide to get out of bed at 4 A.M. and get a few things done, well to distract my mind for a few hours. My cat, Fred, went to the vet yesterday and things do not look good for my feline friend. I left at the vet for 24 hours, but I was warned to brace for the worst outcome today. Fred was a starving stray cat that showed up on the deck in 2009. He has been a great pet; always purring and very friendly. My other cat, Gaby, has been quite through the whole ordeal. I feel for her.

While I'm writing this, I'm listening to an Evanescence album, again. It seems anytime I'm stressed the only thing that can calm be down is listening to music, which lately Evanescence is the only music that has been taking away my worries. I only wish the band had more albums out.

It looks like I'm going to get three more packages by UPS today. I keep wondering what my neighbors think of me getting so many packages weekly. They must either think I'm addicted to ordering stuff or I have a lot of money, which neither is true. I very seldom actually order something anymore and if I do, it is normally something I'm saving back as Christmas presents.

Its Not Easy Losing Ten Pounds

As many of my readers know, I have been trying to lose weight since last year, but it hasn't been easy to drop those unwanted pounds. Whether it is the first ten pounds or the last ten pounds, it it isn't an easy thing to accomplish without getting liposuction or getting your stomach stapled, which can both be costly and have some negative side-effects, as it is surgery.

Most doctors will probably recommend old-fashioned dieting and exercising to help you lose weight, but most people today are lazy and want everything to happen within seconds, as people want to slim down in time to visit the beach at Boca Raton, Florida.

Not unless you want to have painful surgery, the only other option is coolsculpting, which is a new way to sculpt your body without surgery and is a great way to get rid of the that extra layer of fat that just won't come off no matter how much you exercise and diet. There are many dermatologists, such as Dr. Hershthal, that can preform this procedure. It basically involves freezing your fat cells until they fall off. It may sound easy, but it can be a bit costly if your on a budget.

The Thanksgiving Cleaning Blues

My week has been filled with me cleaning the house, you know things you don't normally clean except for once a year near Thanksgiving, and of course I've been rearranging and reorganizing things, but I am beyond finished, probably won't be done until Thanksgiving. Plus, I'm trying my best to get all my reviews/posts written for next week and for the Holiday Gift Guide, though there are a few books I still need to read before I can write a review for them.

With a busy schedule I don't have time to get sick, but that is exactly what happened to me. I had a dry throat last night and today I have a severe sore throat, a slight cough, sinuses and a headache. I have a feeling I will be feeling even worse tomorrow, but I'm determined to clean out the fish aquarium, move the entertainment system to the left slightly, dust and a million other things I don't want to do, but I want things to look nice for Thanksgiving.

Plus, I have to go shopping at Walmart (again). Typically, I would rather go early in the mornings, as I don't care for large crowds, though I am planning on going to the Black Friday sale on Thursday night. My new electric razor is great, but I do want to get some disposable razors, as I don't always remember to charge the electric razor. I noticed the department stores have been getting in Shaving kits containing a razor, disposable blades and shaving cream. A few of the kits are cheap and others are a little out of my price range.

Daily Rehash's Fall 2013 Movie Preview

There have been many big-budget box-office flops this summer and the few successful ones, like Man of Steel, weren't exactly a critical success. Hopefully, the movies being released this fall will do better. The big three films everyone is waiting for is Thor: The Dark World, Ender's Game, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The Daily Rehash gave their take on the fall movies in a recent episode, so I decided to give my own thoughts.

Ender's Game is based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card and is directed by the same guy who brought us X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which gives us a major clue that the movie won't go by the book. Harrison Ford is also in the movie and he has already had two flops for 2013 (42 and Paranoia). Why not make it a third?

After the lackluster 2011's Thor and the overrated Avengers flick, Chris Hemsworth returns as the hammer carrying prince of Asgard in the sequel Thor: The Dark World. I thought the first film was a complete waste of time, but the sequel trailer looks like a major improvement. Let's cross our fingers and hope Loki finally bites the dust.

A Male's Perspective of the Twilight Saga

My original intent was to write separate reviews on the first four Twilight movies, but why waste my time when I could write one post about the most overrated film franchise of all time.

I recall reading the first book by Stephenie Meyer when it was originally released. I read it and thought it was average at best. I tossed the book into the closet and never thought about it again until I saw the first film advertise. Probably like most readers, I bought the other books in the attempt to eventually read them, but I have never opened any of them to page one yet.

One of my hobbies is collecting DVDs (in which I have way too many of) and of course I bought Twilight when it was released. I recognized Kristen Stewart from the Cold Creek Manor and The Messengers, but I never heard of the majority of the cast, except for Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser. I had forgotten most of the book's plot, so the movie was basically new to me. For the most part the movie was mediocre at best. Similar to what I did to the book, I tossed the DVD onto a shelf and forgot about it until I saw the advertisements for New Moon a year later.

In New Moon, the Cullens have very little screen time, giving Taylor Lautner a bigger role and a new haircut. I like the werewolf mythology, but the movie has Bella pining for Edward for entire the entire 130 minutes. What was up with the time? It would have been slightly better if it was under 90 minutes, because nothing happens!

Retrospective - The Midnight Hour

For the past twenty-seven years, one of my annual Halloween watches is the little known horror comedy The Midnight Hour. It first aired on ABC on November 1, 1985 (Yep, one day after Halloween and two days after Garfield's Halloween Adventure aired on CBS) when I was a four-year-old. At the time my parents and I lived in a two-story farmhouse in the country (which was also haunted) and my parents recorded it onto a VHS tape. I would pester my mother into letting me watch The Midnight Hour, even though The Elf would always freak me out.

The Midnight Hour is set on Halloween in the small town of  Pitchford Cove, New England. Five high school seniors, Phil (Lee Montgomery), Mary (Dedee Pfeiffer), Mitch (Peter DeLuise), Vinnie (LeVar Burton), and Melissa (Shari Belafonte), break into the town's museum. They steal (or should I saw "borrow") a few costumes and an old trunk. They open the trunk at the local cemetery, in which they find a mysterious scroll. Melissa reads the scroll aloud, unleashing a horrible curse.

A few minutes after the kids leave the cemetery, the undead rise from their graves. The undead's leader is Melissa's own ancestor, Lucinda Cavender, who was put to death over 300 hundred years ago for being a vampire.

G.I. Joe Retaliation Delayed

For some odd reason Paramount pulled their upcoming G.I. Joe Retaliation with stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Joseph Mazzello, Ray Park, and Walton Goggins from the original June 29th 2012 to March 29th, 2013. They are planning on converting the movie into 3D. Why can't Hollywood learn that movies don't look great after they have been converted. If they had filmed in the movie originally with 3D cameras, maybe that would have been alright, but I am not a fan of 3D movies. What was the purpose of releasing the first trailer during the Super Bowl? What about the soon to be released line of Hasbro toys? Or the new DVD releases of the animated series?

With the major flop of the bloated Battleship, I would say Paramount is scared of another one. Even though the first movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra did well at the box-office, it was critically panned by critics and by fans of the original cartoon. I have to admit that the Retaliation trailer looks promising and more in line with the cartoon.
