The faith-based documentary He Calls Me Daughter is now available for streaming on the Angel platform. Directed by Rick Altizer, this powerful film explores the concept of the "father wound," which refers to the emotional pain experienced by women impacted by abandonment, absence, or emotional abuse. Through a collection of touching stories from women of diverse backgrounds, He Calls Me Daughter examines how troubled relationships with fathers can affect various aspects of life, including identity, trust, and faith.

I reviewed the documentary last month (read my review here), so the following is a condensed, revised version of my thoughts on the film: He Calls Me Daughter, apart from typical faith-based documentaries, is a raw and unfiltered portrayal of women's experiences. With a runtime of approximately 80 minutes, it avoids preachy moralizing, allowing the women to share their haunting stories. The film argues that a healthy relationship with a father or father figure is essential for forming a genuine connection with God in adulthood. Conversely, damaged bonds can lead to trust issues and poor choices. As the women recount their struggles, themes of forgiveness and divine guidance emerge as vital for healing and growth.

Visually compelling, He Calls Me Daughter balances dark themes of trauma with hope and redemption. Initially, I wondered if I could relate—being a man without children—but I quickly recognized that we all carry our own childhood burdens. Despite the challenges of confronting the past, finding solace in faith and seeking support are crucial first steps.

This documentary serves as an invitation to face the complex relationships we navigate. Its authenticity resonates deeply, emphasizing the healing power of love, both divine and earthly. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an honest exploration of familial love and recovery. ╌★★★★★

Review: 'He Calls Me Daughter' (2026)

Disclosure: I received a Screener for review, and I want to clarify that my opinions are entirely my own. The giveaway at the bottom of the post is sponsored by 'He Calls Me Daughter' via the Momentum Influencer Network.

In theaters exclusively on March 17th and 18th, the Christian-themed documentary He Calls Me Daughter, directed by Rick Altizer, goes deep into the emotional labyrinth of father-daughter relationships. This powerful film sheds light on the "father wound"—a term that encapsulates the pain felt by women shaped by abandonment, absence, or emotional abuse. Through a collection of poignant stories from women of varied backgrounds, He Calls Me Daughter examines how fractured relationships with fathers ripple through lives, affecting identity, trust, and even faith.

You can learn more about the documentary at hecallsmedaughter.org. Additionally, a Six-Week Discovery Curriculum by Bill & Tracey Robinson is available for personal study or for women's small group Bible studies.

What sets this documentary apart from typical faith-based films is its raw and unfiltered approach. Running at approximately 80 minutes, it steps back from preachy moralizing, allowing the women themselves to share their haunting experiences. Yes, it’s a narrative that could easily be branded as having "daddy issues," yet it's more profound than that. The film posits that a healthy relationship with a father or father figure is crucial for establishing a genuine connection with God in adulthood. Conversely, when that bond is broken, the consequences can plunge one into a vortex of trust issues and poor life choices. As the women recount their struggles, we learn that forgiveness and seeking divine guidance are essential to transcend past traumas and embark on a path toward healing and fulfillment.

Visually, He Calls Me Daughter is a well-crafted documentary that expertly balances the dark, often unspoken themes of trauma with hope and redemption. I entered the documentary thinking I might be an ill-suited reviewer—being a male without children—but I quickly realized that we all carry the weight of our own childhood traumas. Those shadows from the past can be relentless, the struggles challenging to escape. Yet, finding solace in faith, confiding in someone, and embracing a spiritual journey are often the first steps toward moving forward.

He Calls Me Daughter isn’t merely a film; it’s a call to action, an invitation to confront the often anguished relationships we navigate. Its authenticity resonates deeply, reminding viewers of the healing power of love—both divine and earthly. I wholeheartedly recommend this documentary to anyone seeking an unvarnished look at the complexities of familial love and the journey of recovery that follows. Don’t miss it. ╌★★★★★

Blu-ray Review - James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction (2018)

Today on Blu-ray (Amazon) and DVD from RLJ Entertainment (AMC Studios) is 2018’s documentary miniseries James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction, featuring all 6-episodes on a 2-disc set.

There’s no bigger name in the world of science fiction than James Cameron (the director of Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, The Abyss, and Avatar), so it shouldn’t be a shocker he wanted to make the ultimate documentary about science fiction movie and television series.

DVD Review - You Don't Nomi (2019)

It was Trash. It was Art. It was SHOWGIRLS.

The 2019 acclaimed documentary You Don’t Nomi (Not Rated; 92 minutes) landed on DVD and Blu-ray today from RLJE Film (part of the AMC Networks). Written and directed by Jeffery McHale, the documentary tells the tale about one of the biggest flops in Hollywood history - Showgirls.

Directed by legendary Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas, Showgirls should have been a big hit in the Fall of 1995, but thanks to an NC-17 rating and poor reviews, the film flopped at the box office. The movie fared better on home video, bringing in over $100 million. Though it’s on the “worst films” list in history, it has become a cult classic.

The documentary isn’t about the making of the film. Instead, the director mostly focuses on how the movie dug itself out of being one of the biggest flops to becoming a cult adoration.

Final Thoughts

I was in Junior High when Showgirls arrived in theatres in 1995 and having grown up watching Saved By the Bell, I, along with every male classmate, wanted to see Elizabeth Berkley (or otherwise known as Jessie Spano) strip down to her birthday suit. An NC-17 movie would never play around my insignificant Midwest town, so I had to wait to view Showgirls when it premiered on Showtime. Luckily, I had a television in my bedroom because it would have been embarrassing to watch it with my parents. Hell, it was embarrassing to watch it by myself.

Sleazy is the only word to describe Showgirls. The film studio, MGM, promoted it as an erotic-drama, but there's nothing sexy about it. You would know what I'm talking about if you saw the movie.

You Don’t Nomi is a well-made and intriguing documentary. It features critical analysis from critics and fans and reveals the hypocrisy of Hollywood. While I’m not a big fan of Showgirls by any means, after watching the documentary, I now want to re-watch the film with a fresh perspective. If you’re a diehard Showgirls fan, then I recommend seeing You Don’t Nomi.

Learn About Space Exploration with These Blu-rays!

Once upon a time, space exploration was actually a popular subject our society. I recall reading about NASA in textbooks, weekly readers, and Scholastic books back when I was in elementary school in the late '80s and early '90s. While there are a few companies (Space X) trying to figure out how to get us to the Mars, NASA doesn't get very much mainstream attention these days ever since the government retired the shuttle program.

Personally, space exploration has always been an interesting subject for me and I enjoy reading anything on the subject as well as watching documentaries, such as the Space Station (Space Station 3D) and NASA: A Journey Through Space. Both of these documentaries were released to Blu-rays earlier this year by Mill Creek Entertainment. (FYI: Space Station was released on 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray!)

Space Station was the first 3D live-action IMAX film to be shot in space. Produced and directed by Toni Myers, the 47-minute film was original released to IMAX screens in 2002 and grossed over $127 million.

Tom Cruise narrates this documentary about the high-flying laboratory ISS (International Space Station) that's 220 miles above the Earth and moves at a speed of 17,500 MPH.  Highlights include the station's in-orbit construction and glimpses of crew members as they work.

Special Features include:
  • Director's Audio Commentary
  • Adventures in Space - Interviews with Tom Cruise, Director Toni Myers, and the Astronauts aboard.
  • Astronaut-Guided Tour of ISS
    • Expedition 7: An Audio Visual Tour of the ISS
    • STS-108: An Audio Visual Tour onboard Endeavor to the ISS
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray comes with a Digital Code that only be redeemed on the movieSPREE website or app.

Blu-ray Review: A Beautiful Planet

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon

I hate to admit this, but I've never seen to an IMAX film on the big screen. I know the AMC theatre in the city has IMAX screens, but the price for a ticket is too expensive for me.

If you own a 4K television, then you are in luck as you can now own the 2016 IMAX documentary "A Beautiful Planet" on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital combo pack (G; $34.98) from Mill Creek Entertainment, which is the first of two releases (the other title is Journey To The South Pacific) to be released with IMAX Enhanced immersive image, sound, & scale.

The 47-minute documentary is written, produced, and directed by Toni Myers. Narrated by Jennifer Lawrence, A Beautiful Planet puts the cameras in the hands of astronauts (Scott Kelly, Samantha Cristoforetti, Barry "Butch" Wilmore, Terry Virts, Anton Shkaplerov,  Kjell Lindgren, and Kimiya Yui) who are aboard the International Space Station (ISS). With the use of IMAX cameras, the astronauts shows us what Earth looks like from space.

Special Features include:
  • An Extraordinary Vision
  • IMAX: Astronaut Filmmakers
  • ABP Computing

100 Years Of Horror DVD Review

Not Rated; 10 hours 55 minutes; $14.98

I think I might have mentioned a time or two on here about my love for old horror movies, especially the ones made by Hammer Films. Well, with that being said, you can probably guess why I was excited when I learned that Mill Creek Entertainment would be releasing the 26-part documentary series "100 Years Of Horror" hosted by the late, great horror-icon Christopher Lee.

Originally released back 1996, "100 Years Of Horror" chronicles the history of horror movies from the early 1900s to the late 1970s. I'm not for sure why it was called "100 Years" when the producers skipped over the the films from the 1980s. Most of the movie clips featured are from the classic Universal monster flicks, Hammer Films, and other low-budget creature films. It features interviews with Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr., Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Claude Rains. Additionally, there are interviews with Bela Lugosi, Jr.; Boris Karloff's daughter, Sarah Karloff; and Claude Rains' daughter, Jessica Rains.

The series was produced, written and directed by Ted Newsom, who created BBC's Flesh And Blood-The Hammer Heritage Of Horror.

The episodes on the 3-disc set are:

Dracula And His Disciples
Blood-Drinking Beings
Frankenstein And Friends
Baron Frankenstein
Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
Werewolves
Bela Lugosi
Boris Karloff
The Evil Unseeable
Phantoms
Witches
Demons
Mutants
Freaks
Scream Queens
Girl Ghouls
Maniacs
Gory Gimmicks
Sorcerers
Aliens
Mummies
Zombies
Mad Doctors
Man-Made Monsters
Giants
Dinosaurs
