[DVD Review]—Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

I'm probably the last blogger in the universe to write a review for last year's blockbuster Spider-Man: No Way Home - a.k.a. the 8th Spidey live-action movie from Sony Pictures. Why the wait? Well, I didn't see the film when it was playing in theaters, so I waited until the home media or, more specifically, the DVD. I know what many of you are thinking, "A DVD? What is this, 2002?" Listen, I review whatever the PRs send to me. In this case, it was a DVD. Shockingly, this DVD comes with a Digital code. (FYI - To all the moochers out there: Sorry, but I already redeemed the code. Find your freebies elsewhere.)

[DVD Review] - The Spanish Princess: Part 2

Philippa Gregory is one biggest names in the historical fiction game. She has written nearly fifty novels, including The White Queen and The White Princess. These two novels got adapted into STARZ miniseries in 2013 and 2017. STARZ adapted The Constant Princess and The King's Curse into the limited series The Spanish Princess. Part 1, consisting of eight episodes, aired in 2019, and Part 2, consisting of eight more episodes, aired in late 2020.

[DVD Review] - V.C. Andrews' Landry Family

I'm getting to where I dislike almost every book-to-film adaptation that Hollywood cranks out for us poor souls to devour. Instead of going by the book, studios like to water down the story, revamp characters, dumbify the dialogue, and ignore plot points. Why do they do this? Budgetary issues and runtime restraints have something to do with it. Sometimes there are too many cooks in the kitchen - aka too many studio-heads inferring with production. Made-for-television movies and miniseries tend to be the worse (with the expectation of a few Stephen King adaptations and the North and South miniseries from the 1980s).

[DVD Review] - Ancient Aliens: Season 13

Have you ever channel surfed and come across the fictionalized documentary series Ancient Aliens on History?

I don't want to admit to this, but I have watched a few episodes of Ancient Aliens over the years. Some unique individuals believe in every alternate history conspiracy theory that these so-called Ancient Alien experts concocted. I, for one, don't believe 90% of what they consider is the truth. I only watched this fake documentary series out of my nostalgia for The X-Files and pure boredom.

[DVD Review] - The Walking Dead: World Beyond: Season One

Six or seven years ago, The Walking Dead fans would probably have been excited about another spinoff. Sadly, a lot has happened since The Walking Dead debuted on AMC in 2010, and the fanbase has shrunk to a small number of loyal viewers. The first spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, had to do a reboot starting with season 4, and while creatively it has improved, the viewership dropped to a record low with the season 6 finale. For some unknown reason, AMC and The Walking Dead's chief content director Scott M. Gimple thought it would be the perfect time to create a third series - The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

[DVD Review] - DON'T TELL A SOUL (2020)

A few nights ago, I watched a disturbing but entertaining thriller DONT TELL A SOUL (R; 96 minutes) from writer and director Alex McAulay. Like many films from 2020, its planned film festival premiere got delayed to the Fall of 2020. Saban Films snatched up the North American distribution rights and released the film to theaters and VOD in January 2021. Lionsgate Home Entertainment released it on DVD and Blu-ray last week.

[Blu-ray Review] - VANGUARD (2020)

The action-adventure film VANGUARD (PG-13; 107 minutes) landed on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital last week from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. It's written and directed by Stanley Tong and stars the legendary Jackie Chan.

The plot is cliched and confusing at the same time. Qin Guoli is a Chinese accountant living in Great Britain. He tips off Scotland Yard that the terrorist organization Brothers of Vengeance is forcing him to finance a project by their leader, Maasym. SPOILER WARNING: United States forces kill Maasym during a raid. His son, Omar, survives and wants to get his greedy hands on his father's money, so he hires a mercenary gang to kidnap Qin and his wife, Meiwei.

[DVD Review] - CHEER! RALLY! KILL! 5-Film Collection

It's time to grab your pom-poms, pop some popcorn, and binge-watch CHEER! RALLY! KILL! 5-Film Collection, which is now available to own on DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

After reading that, you're probably wondering what the hell is wrong with me because everyone knows I'm a horror movie fanatic. Don't worry. There's nothing clinically wrong with me. Why would I want to review five made-for-Lifetime cheerleader-themed movies? That's a question only my shrink could answer. What I can tell you is my noggin thought these five cheesy-fest flicks would be either entertaining or downright cringe. And I was kinda-sorta right to some degree.

Let's begin with the bad and move our way up to the not-so-bad.

The Wrong Cheerleader (also titled The Wrong Cheerleader: Back In Action) centers on teenager Becky (played by Cristine Prosperi) starting her Senior year at a brand-new school. She quickly makes the cheer squad and lands a handsome boyfriend, Rob (played by David Meza). Sadly, the good luck stops there because it turns out that Rob is a psychopath. Vivica A. Fox costars as the cheerleader coach. (Rating - 1 out of 5)

The Secret Lives of Cheerleaders
is a poorly-acted dramedy centering around Ava Scott (played by Savannah May) starting a new life at a new school. (Yep, there's a recurring theme in these movies.) She joins the cheer squad and instantly bunts heads with the cheer captain and Homecoming Queen Katrina (played by Allie DeBerry), who will do anything to stay at the top. Denise Richards costars as Ava's mother. (Rating - 2 out of 5)

Undercover Cheerleader centers on transfer high school student Autumn Bailey (played by Kayla Wallace) joining the cheer squad, but there's a twist - she's an undercover journalist for the school's newspaper. After her first article comes out, a psychopath starts targeting the squad. Maddie Phillips (Netflix's Teenage Bounty Hunters) costars as Autumn's friend Kara. (Rating - 2.5 out of 5)

The Cheerleader Escort
is the only one of the five movies to take place in college. The plot involves a freshman student, Cassie (played by Alexandra Beaton), joining the cheer squad. After her mother (played by Cynthia Preston) doesn't have enough money for her tuition, a fellow cheerleader, Gaby (played by Joelle Farrow), helps her to make some extra cash by becoming an escort for rich men. Awful things happen, which leads Cassie to expose the escort ring. (Rating - 2.5 out of 5)

Identity Theft Of A Cheerleader is the dumbest title as it doesn't make any sense. The plot involves a 30-year-old woman, Vicky Patterson (played by Mairara Walsh), losing her retail job. She ends up stealing the photo id of her teenage coworker, signs up for unemployment, and enrolls herself in high school, so she can join the cheerleader squad in an attempt to make her cold-hearted mother proud. (Rating - 3.5 out of 5)

Final Thoughts

I don't watch very many made-for-TV movies because most of them are cheaply produced with bad acting and horrible directing. Honestly, I don't know why I requested a review copy for CHEER! RALLY! KILL!, as obviously I'm not the right audience for these types of films. Nevertheless, I watched each movie with an open mind and was entertained for the most part.

The Wrong Cheerleader
is the only movie I didn't like. Hollywood has done the boyfriend stalker plot to death. The script plays out like a corny soap opera plot from the 1990s, and the acting from the entire cast is hideous, though the latter might have something more to do with the directing.

The other films are more or less the same for me, except for Identity Theft of A Cheerleader, which is the best of the five movies. Cheesy? Hell, yes! But in a fun way.

The picture and sound qualities are decent for the two-disc set. There are no special features or bonus extras.

Overall, if you're into cheesy low-budget cheerleader movies, then you might find some enjoyment watching the CHEER! RALLY! KILL! 5-Film Collection.

DVD Review - Fatima (2020)

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment sent me a review copy of Fatima (PG-13; 113 minutes) towards the tail end of October, and I didn't have to watch the DVD until recently. Originally, Picturehouse planned on releasing the film to theaters on April 24th, but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film got canceled. Later, it got a limited release in theaters and went to VOD on August 28th, before landing on DVD on October 27th.

DVD Review - Grant: The Complete Miniseries

While cleaning off my desk, I stumbled upon Grant: The Complete Miniseries DVD, which Lionsgate Home Entertainment sent to me in October. As you can probably guess, I had forgotten about even having it. What can I say? I've been busy with non-blogging for the past two months, so I'm just now getting around to reviewing it.

Does anyone remember the television drama Pan Am airing on ABC in 2011?

DVD Review: The Spanish Princess (Season One)

*This is a sponsored review. All opinions are 100% mine.

WALMART
Now available to own on DVD from STARZ and Lionsgate Home Entertainment is The Spanish Princess, featuring all 8 episodes from the limited series. It's also available to own Blu-ray and Digital. There are no special features or bonus extras on the 3-disc DVD set.

The Spanish Princess is a sequel to 2013's The White Queen and 2017's The White Princess, all of which are based on the historical novels by bestselling author Philippa Gregory. No, there isn't an actual novel titled The Spanish Princess. The limited series is adapted from two titles -  The Constant Princess and The King's Curse.

The series spans the year 1501 to 1509 and centers around Catherine of Aargon (played by Charlotte Hope), the young Princess of Spain who has been promised the English throne ever since she was a little girl. She is sent to London to marry the young Prince Arthur (played by Angus Imrie). Just as her dream of becoming queen is about to come true, the unexpected happens - Prince Arthur dies!

Almost everyone at the court wants Catherine to return to Spain as soon as possible, especially King Henry VII's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort (played by Harriet Walter) who has a twisted hatred for her. Despite being unwanted, she is determined to become queen and sets her eyes on marring her brother-in-law, Prince Harry (played by Ruairi O'Connor).

The Spanish Princess is returning for an 8-episode second (and final) season on STARZ in 2020.

Midnight Horror Review: Forever Knight: The Complete Series

*This is a sponsored review. All opinions are 100% mine.

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
Does anyone actually remember there being a "Crimetime After Primetime" lineup airing on CBS during the 1992-1993 season late-at-night after the local news?

I was an eleven-year-old in 1992 and I have no memory of any television shows airing that late. Then again, I had a curfew in 1992 and wasn't allowed to stay up late on school nights." Weekends were a completely other story as I would stay up past midnight to watched the edited versions of Tales of the Crypt on Fox.

Anyway, the first season of the cult Canadian vampire series Forever Knight aired on CBS during their "Crimetime After Primetime." After the entire lineup was cancelled to make way for Late Show with David Letterman, the second season moved to syndication and the third & final season aired on the USA Network.

Mill Creek Entertainment recently released Forever Night: The Complete Series DVD set (TV-14; 52 hrs 43 mins; $64.98) featuring all 70 episodes! There are no special features or bonus extras.

Forever Knight is a reworking of the television movie Nick Knight starring Rick Springfield that aired on CBS in 1989. For the series, Geraint Wyn Davies took over the role of Nick Knight, a vampire who works at as a nighttime detective for the Toronto police. He was born in A.D. 1200. As adult, he was forced to fight in the Crusades to avoid facing a murder trial which he was being accused of killing his love, Gwyneth. He returned to Europe after the Crusades where became a drunk. Eventually, he meets the vampire Janette DuCharme (played by Deborah Duchêne) and along with her master, Lucien LaCroix (played by Nigel Bennett), they seduce him into becoming an immortal. After many many years of killing innocent humans, Nick turns his back on being a vampire and goes on a quest to redeem himself.

As a cop, Nick Knight uses his supernatural abilities to protect the innocent and to capture the bad guys. The only human who knows of his "curse" is medical coroner Natalie Lambert (played by Catherine Disher). And of course his maker LaCroix knows all about Nick's past and will do anything to make sure he stays a vampire forever.

There's also a bonus film - Alligator Alley. And, yes, I'm well aware these movies destroys the purpose of Shark Week.

The two-disc set comes with a Digital code that can only be redeemed on Mill Creek Entertainment's new streaming service - Movie SPREE - which is available as an app on Roku Channel Store, Amazon Appstore (Fire TV), Google Play, and the Apple App Store. You can also redeem the Digital code on movieSPREE.com/redeem.

Ghost Shark (2013; Not Rated; 87 mins) - Directed by Griff Furst, this supernatural film has a shark coming back from the dead as a vengeful spirit and it will kill anybody who is near any type of water source, even a Slip 'N Slide. The cast include Richard Moll and Mackenzie Rosman.

Mississippi River Sharks (2017; Not Rated; 86 mins) - Directed by Misty Talley, the film centers around a group of sharks attacking a "fish rodeo" on the Mississippi River. The cast includes Cassie Steele and Jason London.

Ozark Sharks (2016; Not Rated; 86 mins) - Directed by Misty Talley, the film centers around a family traveling to the Ozarks for a simple vacation, but, sadly, they're being stalked about a group of bull sharks. The movie stars Allisyn Ashley Arm, Michael Papajohn, Ross Britz, and Ashton Leigh.

Santa Jaws (2018; Not Rated; 88 mins) - Directed by Misty Talley, this holiday tale centers around a grounded aspiring comic book artist teenager who uses an antique pen to draw (and imagine) a great white shark wearing a Santa's hat to get revenge on everyone he's mad at. The shark comes to life and kills anybody who has the Christmas spirit. The movie stars Reid Miller, Jim Klock, and Ritchie Montgomery.

Saturday Morning Nostalgia: Jackie Chan Adventures: The Demon Portals Saga

*This is a sponsored post. All opinions are 100% mine.

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
I was never an early riser during my childhood, but I would wake up with a smile on face on Saturday mornings with the full intention of eating a full bowl of sugary cereal, sit on the floor directly in front of the TV, and watch my favorite cartoons on network television.

Yes, times have definitely changed thanks to the government setting rules about children's animated programs. Now the networks only show local news and educational programs; though you can still find cartoons airing on cable channel. Plus, you can find tons of cartoons on streaming services. However, it doesn't have the same feeling as it did in the 1980s when you could watch free animated delights on ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox.

While I do watch the occasional cartoon series on Netflix, I tend to watch old and new cartoons on DVD or Blu-ray; which leads to me to today's review of the Jackie Chan Adventures: The Demon Portals Saga DVD ($24.98; 13 hours 51 minutes) that's being released on June 4th from Mill Creek Entertainment. The 3-disc set contains all 39 episodes from the second season.

I'm pretty sure almost everyone has heard of the great action star Jackie Chan. Well, believe it or not he had his own animated series that aired from 2000 to 2005 on the now defunct Kids' WB for 95 episodes over the course of 5 seasons. Jackie Chan voiced an animated version of himself. The rest of the voice cast consisted of James Sie, Stacie Chan, Sab Shimono, Noah Nelson, Clancy Brown, Adam Baldwin, Miguel Sandoval, Susan Eisenberg, Franco Velez, and John DiMaggio.

In the series, Jackie Chan is an archeologist for a San Francisco university and he's also an excellent martial artist. He lives with his 11-year-old niece, Jade, and their uncle, Uncle Chan, who owns an antique store. Jackie's life is turned upside down when a covert police squad called Section 13 enlists him to locate 12 magical talismans that are scattered across the world.

Sounds like fun, right?

Well, as it turns out, the sinister Valmont wants the talismans and sends his Dark Hand goons to retrieve them.

Jackie, Jade, and Uncle Chan must work together as a team to keep the talisman from falling into the enemy's hands.

The real-life Jackie Chan is featured in a short segment at the end of every episode, where he answers a few questions from his young fans.

DVD Review: The Adventures of Robin Hood: The Complete Series

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
Hopefully, I'm not the only one who's tired of the countless remakes and reboots of Robin Hood! Hollywood has milked the folk hero story to death!! And many of the recent takes on the character have been horrible.

Well, it's a good thing us fans can go back and watch the better versions (movies and television series) on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital. Mill Creek Entertainment will be releasing The Adventures of Robin Hood: The Complete Series DVD Set ($34.98; 59hrs 33mins) on May 14th; which features all 143 episodes from the classic British series on 11 discs. There are no special features or bonus extras; though it does come with a Digital code that can be redeemed and streamed on Mill Creek Entertainment's website.

The Adventure of Robin Hood aired on ITV in the UK and on CBS here in the United States from 1955 to 1959. The series started Richard Greene as Robin of Locksley, a Saxon nobleman who returns home to Nottingham from the Crusades and quickly becomes an outlaw. He teams with the other Sherwood Forest outlaws and eventually becomes their leader (a.k.a. Robin Hood) by the end of the second episode. Along with Little John (played by Archie Duncan), Friar Tuck (played by Alexander Gauge), and their merry men, Robin Hood robs from the rich and gives back to the poor, as well as outrunning the Sheriff Nottingham (played by Alan Wheatley).

Other cast members included Bernadette O'Farrell as Maid Marian in Seasons 1 & 2, Patricia Driscoll as Maid Marian in Seasons 3 & 4, and Ian Hunter as Sir Richard of the Lea.

FYI: Richard Greene reprised his role as Robin Hood for the 1960 Hammer Film Productions' feature film  Sword of Sherwood Forest. It was basically a retelling of how Robin Hood met Maid Marian. None of the other cast members from the series returned.

DVD Review: Outlaws & Con Men: 4 Movie Collection

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon

Here's a little fact about me: I'm a big of fan of Italian spaghetti westerns, especially the Man with No Name Trilogy starting Clint Eastwood, as well as The Call Me Trinity and Trinity Is Still My Name starring Terence Hill and Bud Spencer.

Over the past month, I've been watching the Outlaws & Con Men: 4 Movie Collection ($9.98; 5 hours 46 minutes), which was recently released on DVD + Digital by Mill Creek Entertainment. There are no special features or bonus extras on the DVD. The digital code can only be redeemed and streamed on the Mill Creek Entertainment's website.

The film also goes the title He Who Shoots First!.

DVD Review: The Roy Rogers: Happy Trails Collection

Mill Creek Entertainment; Amazon
At one point in my life, I would never take the time out to watch westerns from the 1940s and 1950s. Yes, that means I'm not a John Wayne fan; I'm more of a Clint Eastwood fan, which would explain why I own every season of Rawhide on DVD. Besides from John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, one of the biggest (or more recognizable) star of the western genre was Roy Rogers. Yep, the King of Cowboys, who appeared in over 100 movies and starred in his own television series from 1951 to 1957.

Why am I talking about Roy Rogers?

Well, over the last few nights I have been watching The Roy Rogers: Happy Trails Collection DVD Set ($19.98; Not Rated; 21 hrs 2 mins) that was recently released by Mill Creek Entertainment. It's basically a re-release of the Timeless Media DVD set that was released in 2010, but with a new artwork on the DVD jacket.

This release features 20 films from the "Happy Trails Theater" which aired on TNN in the late 1980s and was hosted by Roy Rogers and his wife Dale Cooper. There would be a short segment at the beginning (sometimes with a special guest), followed by a feature film, and then there would be a wrap up segment at the very ending. A few of the western guest stars included Gene Autry, Iron Eyes Cody, Pat Brady, Ruth Terry, Roy "Dusty" Rogers Jr., and Pat Butram. The original running time for the films were shorten to fit within the 90-minute television spot with commercials! All the of the movies on the four-disc set are the edited versions, except for Cowboy and the Senorita, which doesn't have the "Happy Trails Theater" segments.

The film titles are:
  • Sons of the Pioneers (1942; 62 minutes)
  • Trigger, Jr. (1950; 64 minutes)
  • Pals Of The Golden West (1951; 63 minutes)
  • Young Bill Hickok (1940; 62 minutes)
  • Don't Fence Me In (1945; 61 minutes)
  • Down Dakota Way (1949; 62 minutes)
  • The Golden Stallion (1949; 63 minutes)
  • Man From Oklahoma (1945; 62 minutes)
  • Rainbow Over Texas (1946; 62 minutes)
  • Trail of Robin Hood (1950; 64 minutes)
  • Sunset in El Dorado (1945; 63 minutes)
  • North of the Great Divide (1950; 64 minutes)
  • Bells of Coronado (1950; 63 minutes)
  • South of Caliente (1951; 63 minutes)
  • In Old Amarillo (1951; 64 minutes)
  • Along The Navajo Trail (1945; 61 minutes)
  • Twilight in the Sierras (1950; 64 minutes)
  • Susanna Pass (1949; 63 minutes)
  • Spoilers of The Plains (1951; 62 minutes)
  • Cowboy and the Senorita (1944; 77 minutes)

Bonus Features include:
  • Roy Rogers Biography
  • "Sidekicks" starring Gabby Hayes, Pat Brady, Pinkie Lee & more!
  • Tour of the Roy Rogers Museum hosted by Roy "Dusty" Rogers Jr.
