{Sunday Post} - Breathless, 61 Hours, and Audrey Rose

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

I cannot believe October is almost over. Honestly, it doesn't feel like Halloween to me. It's my favorite holiday, but I'm not in the mood for All Hallow's Eve this year. Every October, I watch a slew of horror movies, but the only one I have seen is Halloween Kills. I've seen the slasher sequel twice on Peacock. While it's far from perfect, I like it slightly better than the 2018 reboot.

In the wake of Picard's words, everyone began to talk at once―some of them dismayed at his statement, others arguing against it or in favor of direct action.

My Thoughts

Gallery Books kindly sent me an ARC of Star Trek: Coda: The Ashes of Tomorrow, the second of three novels that will end the Trek lit-verse and recannon everything to line up with the Paramount+ series, Star Trek: Picard. I had planned on reading a different book, but The Ashes of Tomorrow was calling my name.

He looked about, wishing for a supernatural vortex to whisk it away, and settled for putting the safety back on and placing it carefully into the pocket of his scrubs.

My Thoughts

I haven't started reading The Living Dead, but I wanted to share one sentence from this massive zombie novel.

The heat wave had broken three days before, bringing springlike temperatures to the capital, light showers at night to wash the streets, and a steady breeze that had thus far kept pollution from hazing the blue sky.

page 57, "The X-Files: Whirlwind" by Charles Grant

My Thoughts

Page 56 is blank for The X-Files: Whirlwind, so I'm featuring a sentence from page 57. I've had a paperback copy since the summer of 1995, and remarkably it's still in good condition. If the book came out during the school months, it would have some wear and tear from being shoved into a bookbag or jammed into a jacket pocket. Charles L. Grant only wrote two novels in The X-Files series, though he did write plenty of horror novels throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Sadly, the author passed away in 2006.

It was a nice night, a comfortable breeze, and Trudy spent most of the time complaining about her landlady in a way that, at one point, had him laughing so hard he tripped over a raised section of sidewalk.

page 56, "The X-Files: Goblins" by Charles Grant

My Thoughts

Does anyone remember spending your Friday nights watching The X-Files? Well, that's how I spent my Friday nights in the mid-1990s until Fox moved the series to Sundays. Unlike most science fiction franchises, The X-Files didn't pan too well in the world of tie-in books. Only six original adult books got published in the 1990s. Considering how popular the series was during its first run, I'm surprised the tie-ins never took off in the vein of Star Trek and Star Wars. I've owned a battered paperback of The X-Files: Goblins since 1994. Did I say battered? The book has some wear and tear. The book spent the majority of my 8th-grade year inside either my back pocket or bookbag. I read it several times, so it's seen better days.

Their ruined clothing, sopped with dark, pulpy blood, twisted with crushed remains of their flesh.

page 56, "The Noise" by James Patterson and J.D. Barker

My Thoughts

Little, Brown and Company was supposed to have sent me a review copy of The Noise by James Patterson and J.D. Barker. Two weeks after the book's release date, I still hadn't received a copy. I contacted my PR contact and - nothing! I never received a reply. I ended up buying the book. Three chapters in, and I can already tell it's a YA story, even though the marketing stated it's an adult thriller.

La Forge knew better than to push that particular line of discussion any further, always careful to respect her need to maintain confidentiality with respect to the crew and whomever she might see as a patient.

page 56, "Star Trek: Coda: Moments Asunder" by Dayton Ward

My Thoughts

Besides the cool-looking cover, I don't have any thoughts on Star Trek: Coda: Moments Asunder. Why is this? It's because I received a review copy this afternoon from Gallery Books and haven't had any time to look at it. I do know it's a three-part crossover series featuring characters from The Next Generation and DS9. I'm not for sure if any Voyager characters appear, but I wouldn't be surprised.

The daughter begins playing the piano just like her deceased mother and shows other signs that her body has been inhabited by her restless spirit.

page 56, "Evil Seeds" edited by Vanessa Morgan

My Thoughts

I know horror films aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I've been a fan of the genre since I was a little bitty kid in the 1980s. I guess you can say I have a soft spot for any horror movie-related book, such as Evil Seeds: The Ultimate Movie Guide To Villainous Children, which I will post a review of on the 13th.
