Sunday Post - The House of Vesper Sands, The Massacre of Mankind, and Rebecca

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

1-16-21 - Many of you might be wondering where I've been for the past few weeks. The truth be told is that I've been depressed on and off since Christmas. There were several days where I couldn't get even get out of bed. I'm trying my best to deal with my problems, so I don't want anyone to worry about me.

Writing reviews/posts has become a pain-in-neck for me. I can stare at a blank screen for hours without writing one single word. Even this post has taken me almost a week to complete. Writer's block? Maybe. Though I'm guessing it has something to do with my depression. I'm going to do my best to get past this somehow.

Sunday's goal is to review Weeks: Books 2 by Jasyn T. Turley. It's my second read for 2021. There are six or seven Christian romances that I need to write reviews for this month. I read these during the Fall, but I never got around to reviewing them. Shockingly, I jotted down notes for these titles, which is a rare occurrence for me. (Note: Knowing me, I'll probably end up rereading these books.)

Update 1-18-21 - I was sick yesterday afternoon, so I didn't write the review for Weeks: Book 2. I'll be working on it this morning.

Update 1-20-21 - I finally finished the review of Weeks: Book 2. You can read the review here

What Am I Reading?

I have several new NetGalley eBooks on my Kindle that I'll be reading soon, but beforehand I'm going to read 1938's gothic romance thriller Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. I had watched Netflix's remake and became interested in reading the novel. A month or so ago, I ran across the book at a Walmart store in a nearby county. I glanced at it, but I didn't buy it at the time. I don't know why. Anyway, I went back to that store a few days ago, and luckily they still had the book in stock. So, Rebecca is my next read.

What's in the Mail?

There's been nothing review related in the mail, though there should be two or three titles on the way.
I received a copy of The Wicked Sister by Virginia Barlow in the mail this afternoon. I'll be reviewing it on Feb. 16th for an upcoming book tour.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

Recently, I picked up two hardbacks - The Vengeance of Mothers by Jim Fergus and The Massacre of Mankind by Stephen Baxter at a Dollar Tree. The latter is a sequel to H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, authorized by the author's estate. I almost didn't buy The Vengeance of Mothers. I glanced at it, put it back, glanced at it again, and put it back down. Then before I checked out, I went back and grabbed it.

The titles from NetGalley are Small Magic by Terry Brooks, Who Took Eden Mulligan? by Sharon Dempsey, The Searching Dead by Ramsey Campbell, Perfect Little Dolls by Karen Long, The Body Will Follow by Rob E. Boley, The Perfect 10 by Eric O'Keefe, The Robin's Greeting by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Little One by Sarah A. Denzil, and Winning Miss Winthrop by Carolyn Miller.

Additionally, I received the audiobook The House of Vesper Sands by Paraic O'Donnell. I've listened to some of it, and I haven't cared too much for it so far.

Other newish titles on my Kindle are Virgin River by Robyn Carr, Paradise Valley by Robyn Carr, Harvest Moon by Robyn Carr, The Fireman by Joe Hill, Star Trek: The Klingon Gambit by Robert E. Vardeman, Star Trek: Fortunes of War: Battlestations! by Diane Carey, Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Peacekeepers by Gene DeWeese, Star Trek; Invasion!: First Strike by Diane Carey, Star Trek: DS9: The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition by Ira Steven Behr, Star Trek: DS9: Trial By Error by Mark Garland, and Star Trek: That Which Divides by Dayton Ward, and Star Wars: Thrawn: Treason by Timothy Zahn.

    1. Jessica,

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving your encouraging comments.

I saw the hold Hitchcock's Rebecca many years ago and loved it. The Netflix movie is good, but I wish it had a more gothic feel to it. I cannot wait to read the book. Hopefully, I'll be able to start reading it today.

  3. I've known depression too so I can relate and wish you well. Rebecca is such a great novel written by a wonderful novelist, one of my favourites. I've seen the Jim Fergus a lot in bookshops, so I'm curious about it. Have fun with Star Trek, I hope. Live long and prosper :)

    I like that song.

I'm curious about that Baxter book. I remember that coming out a while back and seeing that it was an authorized sequel had me REALLY curious.

  9. I'm so sorry to hear about your depression. This has been a hard year and really does seem to be just exhausting. I was having some issues with depression and I spoke with my doctor and they were able to put me on something really mild which helped a ton and I still feel like me. I love Rebeca! Hope you have a great week!

  10. Sorry to hear you've been depressed. I hope it passes for you quickly. Maybe your doctor could help?
I wouldn't worry about reviews etc at the moment. Look after yourself and everything else will fall into place again.
