{Sunday Post} — Shadow State, The House by the Cemetery, and Wind in the Ashes

What Am I Reading?

There was a slight change of plans from last week: I wasn't into the "horror" library loans, so I returned them. I read a few stories in Writers of the Future, Volume 40, and intend to finish this week. Also, I'll return to Bill O'Reilly's Killing the Witches tonight, tomorrow, or sometime soon. Then I'll move on to Brad Thor's Shadow of Doubt and Tom Clancy's Shadow State by M. P. Woodward; I received the latter from the publisher.

{Sunday Post} — Nathaniel, Shadow of Doubt, and Talons of Eagles

* Weekly Tidbits *

  • There was a split second where I thought the autumn weather was arriving early, but Mother Nature played a trick and ramped up the humidity, causing my allergies to go to wonkers. I spent the week sick and got more blogging written in one week than I've done all year.

  • I got my Real ID. Surprisingly, there wasn't a long line at the driver's license bureau—that's what it's called in my neck of the woods; no DMV—and I wasn't there for ten minutes.

  • The KC Chiefs lost their second—out of three—preseason game last night. Hopefully, this isn't a premonition of things to come.

  • On the flip side, the KC Royals won last night 13-1 against the Cincinnati Reds. Currently, the Royals are in the third AL Wildcard spot and are in third place in the ALC—two games behind the Twins and four games behind the Guardians.

What Am I Reading?

After finishing Tom Clancy's Act of Defiance, I changed plans and read Beans, Bourbon, and Blood by J.A. Johnstone instead of Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay—so, I'll start Horror Movie today. Also, today, I'll begin reading Writers of the Future, Volume 40. If I find the time, I'll read another chapter in Bill O'Reilly's Killing the Witches

[Review] — "TWISTERS" is a Mindless, Entertaining Popcorn Blockbuster

TWISTERS (PG-13; 122 minutes), the summer's unexpected box-office blockbuster, is now available for rent or purchase on digital platforms from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Recipient of an A- CinemaScore and a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the "hard-hitting disaster spectacle" (Impulse Gamer) has made history as the biggest opening for a disaster film ever. Exclusively available for purchase from select nationwide retailers, such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home (formerly known as Vudu), Comcast Xfinity, Cox, and Microsoft Movies & TV, is the all-American action-packed adventure with a never-before-seen gag reel and deleted scenes.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung Munyurangabo and written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant)—based on a story by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick)—TWISTERS is a standalone sequel to the classic 1996 disaster film TWISTER. Standalone means an in-name-only sequel with zero connections to the original. There are no returning characters and no name drops; only a similar plot with updated technology with a brand-new cast: Glen Powell (Anyone But YouTop Gun: Maverick), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where The Crawdads SingFresh), David Corenswet (Pearl, “The Politician”), Anthony Ramos (In The HeightsHamilton), and Brandon Perea (Nope).

The protagonist of this quasi-reboot is Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who gave up pursuing tornadoes across the Oklahoma prairies to safely study them on screens in New York City following a tragic tornado experience. Kate is drawn back to the field by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) and a once-in-a-lifetime scientific chance, where she meets Tyler (Glen Powell), a charming daredevil and self-proclaimed tornado wrangler whose appetite for tornado-tracking escapades has made him a social media sensation. As the storm season increases with horrific occurrences unlike anything before, Kate and Tyler realize they must work together to tame and survive an unprecedented outbreak of destructive tornadoes.

The original TWISTER is what I would describe as a "summer blockbuster," it has a special place in my heart because I was a loner midwest teen when it hit theaters in 1996. I was unimpressed when I saw the 30-second TV spot for TWISTERS during the Super Bowl LVIII and automatically labeled the film a "flop." To my surprise—and many others—TWISTERS received generally positive reviews from mainstream critics and grossed $81.3 million during its opening weekend. It's now surpassed the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office.

TWISTERS is surprisingly better than expected, though you can see the best thrills in the trailers. The actors do their best with their two-dimensional characters. The plot is as thin as possible, but I imagine disaster movie fans want to see less story and more destruction. And there's plenty of destruction, but the CGI effects were underwhelming, only saved by the outstanding sound effects.

Overall, TWISTERS is a mindless, entertaining popcorn blockbuster. Is it flawed? Yep! Enjoyable? Sure! ╌★★★★✰

[Review] — "AFTER THAT NIGHT" is a Dreaded, Misguided Thriller

It came to my revelation that New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter was soon to publish a new novel, This Is Why I Lied, and it dawned on me that I should probably write my thoughts on her previous books, AFTER THAT NIGHT—published nearly a year ago by William Morrow.

[Review] — Tom Clancy's "ACT of DEFIANCE" is a Page-Turning Submarine Thriller

Earlier this summer, the newest "Jack Ryan" thriller, ACT of DEFIANCE, landed on bookstore shelves from G.P. Putnam's Sons. It's the 24th entry in the long-running series that began in 1984 with The Hunt for the Red October, written by the late bestselling author Tom Clancy. Following Clancy's death in October 2013, his estate has continued his legacy by hand-selecting other talented authors to write additional stories. Navy veterans Brian Andrews and Jeffery Wilson co-authored the bestselling Tier One, Sons of Valor, and Shepherds book series, and now they teamed up for ACT of DEFIANCE, giving us readers a modern-day sequel to The Hunt for the Red October.

[Review] — Douglas Preston's "EXTINCTION" is a Fun but Predictable De-Extinct Thriller

Resurrecting the woolly mammoths may sound like fiction, but in our reality, scientists have been trying to "clone" mammoth's DNA for many years and are getting closer thanks to stem-cell research. However, that's another topic entirely. We're here to discuss Douglas Preston's newest thriller—EXTINCTION, a murder mystery novel with mayhem, conspiracies, and de-extinct prehistoric animals.

{Sunday Post} — Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and With a Mind to Kill

What Am I Reading?

I did a tad of reading this past week; I finished Anne Hillerman's Lost Birds and read 3/4 of Tom Clancy's Act of Defiance by Andrews & Wilson. I should finish the latter later tonight. Then I'll move on to a library loan, Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay; it's a shorter book, so I hope to have it knocked out of the park by Wednesday. I have a few ARCs coming, so I'll either move on to one of those—if I receive them soon—or start another library loan, Josh Malerman's Incidents Around the House.
