{Sunday Post} — Dark Watch, Hard to Kill, and The X-Files: Perihelion

What Am I Reading?

Due to a family emergency, my allergies, my depression, etc., my reading was a bit slow this past week. I read only a tad bit more of Bill O'Reilly's Killing the Witches; I'm on page 62. I started reading Anne Hillerman's Lost Birds on Thursday. I'm on page 125.

Song of the Week

Monster Bookmarks

Fresh from the mailbox: two new bookmarks to add to my collection—Frankenstein's Monster and The Bride of Frankenstein.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

I didn't plan on buying James Patteron's latest collaboration with Mike Lupica, Hard to Kill, because I don't typically care for Lupica's writings; nevertheless, I did buy the book after hearing a few good things about it.

I've never bought a William W. Johnstone "Western" for retail price, but I did so for the first time yesterday; well, it's not the real William W. Johnstone; he died twenty years ago, and his niece, J.A. Johnstone, took over as the "ghostwriter" of his books, even though her name receives credit on the covers; from time to time, I find these Westerns at thrift stores, which is why I've never bought the "newer" titles. Then, yesterday, I picked up Beans, Bouron, and Blood at my local Walmart. I've been eyeing the book for a few weeks and figured the paperback would be gone next week when the new books get stocked.

I picked up eighteen books at the thrift store for one dollar total. No, there was no sale; a woman who works there gave me a discount since I buy books there frequently.

First is a 1939 hardback edition of Western Union by Zane Grey.

Next are several Zane Grey paperbacks: Wilderness Trek, The Trail Driver, The Desert of Wheat, The Heritage of the Desert, Valley of Wild Horses, Under the Tonto Rim, Tappan's Burro and Other Stories, and Call of the Canyon.

Then I picked up more Westerns: Triumph of the Mountain Man by William W. Johnstone, Cry of Eagles by William W. Johnstone, Ralph Compton's Bullet Creek by Peter Brandvold, Ralph Compton's Blood Duel by David Robbins, Ralph Compton's Do or Die by David Robbins, and Ralph Compton's The Shadow of a Noose by Ralph Cotton.

Last, I got The Valley of Fear by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dark Watch by Clive Cussler with Jack Du Brul, and The Chronicles of the Black Company (The Black Company, Shadows Linger, The White Rose) by Glen Cook.

At the library, I grabbed a few more "free" books: Wagons West: Missouri! by Dana Fuller Ross, Wagons West: Dakota! by Dana Fuller Ross, Wagons West: Tennessee! by Dana Fuller Ross, Cotton's Inferno by Phil Dunlap, A Good Day to Kill by Dusty Richards, and Blood on the Verde River by Dusty Richards.

New titles on my Kindle are Aliens: Vasquez by V. Castro, Star Trek: TNG: A Fury Scorned by Pamela Sargent and George Zebrowski, The Coworker by Freida McFadden, Write for Your Life by Lawrence Block, and The X-Files: The Official Archives: Cryptids, Biological Anomalies, and Parapsychic Phenomena by Paul Terry.

I only recently learned that The X-Files: Perihelion was coming out on July 30th. I requested to review the book but haven't received a reply from the publisher. Amazon had a 2-month "free" Audible trial, so I signed up for that and used my monthly credit to get The X-Files: Perihelion.

  6. You have some interesting books to read. I was really into westerns for awhile. I should try another. I'm guessing it has been a couple of years now since I read one. I hope you have the best week. Love the bookmarks BTW.
