{Sunday Post}—A People's History of the Vampire Uprising, Beyond Star Trek, and Gothic Romances

The Caffeinated Book Reviewer's Kimberly hosts a weekly meme called "The Sunday Post"!

Weekly Tidbits

  • I'm not sure whether other book lovers experience this, but I become quite frustrated when I can't locate a single book in a series. I dug through bookcases and closets for my Annie Rice novels after viewing the first part of the second episode of AMC's Interview with the Vampire, and for some strange reason, I don't own the tenth book, Blood Canticle. I thought I had a copy, but evidently not since I checked through my books twice and couldn't find it.

  • There will be yet another extensive book purge. If I want to have the room to arrange my books by authors and genres, I have to be really generous and let go of books that I'll never read again. I used the boxes I already had in the garage and got some free small boxes from Dollar General; by free, I mean an employee handed me flat boxes she was about to throw away.

  • I've made a list of the Dean Koontz books I still need to get.

  • On Thursday, I had an influenza vaccination and the second Moderna Booster. This time there were no adverse effects, but the injections left my left arm a little uncomfortable.

  • The movie Halloween Ends, which I've already seen twice on Peacock, was fantastic, contrary to the opinions of most horror lovers. I was going to write a review of it on Saturday night, but my review is evolving into more of an article. Therefore, as soon as I'm done writing it, it will be published as a "Midnight Horror" piece.

What Am I Currently Reading?

This week, my reading has been a touch sluggish. I'm currently halfway through Simon Gervais' The Blackbriar Genesis. It will be finished shortly, and my review is scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll then finish reading the Libby eBooks The Secret Life of Marilyn Monore by J. Randy Taraborrelli and Star Wars: Catalyst by James Luceno. I need to finish listening to The Maze Cutter. I'll then go on to V.C. Andrews' Eden's Children and Lee and Andrew's Child's No Plan B.

Thrifting Finds

Yeah? Surely I need more books? During the week, I went to the thrift store to look at books twice. I found a hardback edition of The Throat by the late brilliant novelist Peter Straub. For those of you who don't already know, I collect Gothic romance paperbacks from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. I bought four books by Dorothy Eden: Listen to Danger, The Shadowy Wife, Death is a Red Rose, and The Sleeping Bride.

More Thrifting

On my second excursion to the thrift store, I purchased five Gothic romances by Virginia Coffman: Curse of the Island Pool, Night at Sea Abbey, The Chinese Door, The House on the Moat, The Vicar of Moura, The Stalking Terror, The Vampyre of Moura, Moura, and The High Terrace.

Antiquing & Bargain Hunting

My days are merging together once more. I was at the same antique store on Tuesday or Wednesday where I had purchased the Star Trek novels a few months earlier. The only Star Trek-related book I was able to discover was Beyond Star Trek by Lawrence M. Krauss, a 1997 nonfiction "niche" book on the physics of extraterrestrial invasions, time travel, ESP, quantum reality, interstellar travel, and the end of time in our universe and in The X-Files, Star Wars, Independence Day, and Star Trek.

I went to a freight surplus store, but I can't for the life of me recall its name. I assumed it was an office supply warehouse for some reason, but I was obviously mistaken. It's more of an odds-and-ends shop. To my amazement, I discovered two "Gray Man" books by Mark Greaney, Ballistic and On Target, both priced at $2.49, as well as the C.J. Box book, Force of Nature, also priced at $2.49.

Dollar Store Finds

Although I don't particularly enjoy Wendy Corsi Staub's thrillers, I did pick up a copy of The Butcher's Daughter at Dollar General since it seemed halfway intriguing. At Dollar Tree, I discovered the strangest book title and cover: Raymond A. Villareal's A People's History of the Vampire Uprising. I also purchased L. S. Hilton's Mestra (not pictured) and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance: Songs of the Seven Gelfling Clans by J.M. Lee.

  1. Glad to hear you enjoyed Halloween Ends. I'll watch it, but probably not until after it comes out on Blu-Ray. I'll snag it from Redbox.

  3. I've gone crazy looking for books within my collection as well! It can be a harrowing task for a book lover to try to track down a particular book that we may or may not have!

  6. Glad the shots weren't too bad...

Halocene rocks. And ooh I was curious about that Star Wars book when it came out.

Those thrift finds are amazing. Such evocative titles- night at sea Abbey??? I would love to find a bunch of those and have em on my shelf! Also Beyond Star Trek looks like a good one.

  7. I feel like I need to do an unhaul soon, as well.
Still need to get my influenza vaccine when it rolls out here; I recently got my COVID19 bivalent vaccine as well. Same as you, just my arm gets a little bit sore from the vaccine. But sometimes I feel a little malaise, too.
I hope you enjoy your current reads!

  8. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Halloween Ends. My husband and I are going to see it tomorrow in the theater. I'm really excited about it. Sorry to hear about your book woes of not owning one of the Anne Rice novels. I have the same woes. I hope you have a great week!
