Never in my life did I think there would be an action-romance subgenre, much less a Christian one. I promised myself I was done with romance novels, but here I am reviewing Honor Bound, the first book in Hallee Bridgeman's Love & Honor series.
The story's main character, Dr. Cynthia Myers, had moved to the war-torn country of Katangela in Africa to escape her shallow lifestyle, her philandering fiancé, and her father—the vice president of the United States. What on earth is she doing in Africa? Cynthia works as a medical missionary doctor to give her life meaning. And now Cynthia's life is in danger because she couldn't save the life of a warlord's son.
Remember, this is a romance, so you know that a dashing hero will eventually save the day. And this hero is Captain Rick Norton, a Green Beret and member of the Army Special Forces A-Team, who has the impossible task of both defending Cynthia and capturing and neutralizing the warlord.
Once again, this is a romance story, and Cynthia, despite her better judgment, develops "loving" feelings for Rick—and vice versa.
I always approach a new book with an open mind and the highest expectations, and having said that—I was pleasantly delighted to discover that I liked Honor Bound. Action romances usually leave me unimpressed by the conclusion, but this one didn't. The author crafted intriguing characters, lively dialogue, gripping circumstances, and detailed descriptions. There were some pace difficulties towards the halfway mark, but it is the only negative aspect and is probably just nitpicking on my side. Overall, "Honor Bound" is an engaging romantic suspense story that I wholeheartedly recommend.╌★★★★✰
