DVD Review - Power Rangers Dino Super Charge: Extinction DVD Review

Lionsgate; NOT RATED; 132 minutes; Amazon

Now available from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is is Saban's Power Rangers Dino Super Charge: Extinction, featuring the final 10 episodes of the twenty-third season of the Power Rangers franchise on a 2-disc set. There are no special features or extras.

Power Rangers Dino Super Charge is the second and final season of the Dino Charge series, which aired last year on Nickelodeon. The group of heroes consists of Tyler the Red Ranger, Shelby the Pink Ranger, Koda the Blue Ranger, Riley the Green Ranger, Chase the Black Ranger, and Ivan, the Gold Ranger. Lead by an alien called Keeper and archaeologist Kendall, who the becomes the Purple Ranger at the end of season one, the Rangers battle the evil alien bounty hunter Sledge and his army of monsters. Occasionally, they get help from Prince Philip III of Zandar, aka the Graphite Ranger.

Season Two mixed things up a bit by putting Heckle/Snide as new the villain, who unleashes what was left of Sledge's henchmen upon the Power Rangers. Two new Power Rangers are introduced - an alien bird creature Zenowing the Silver Ranger, and James Navarro the Aqua Ranger, who happens to be Tyler's long lost father. Of course Sledge eventually returns near the end of the season (series) and uses the Dark Energem against the Rangers.

Episodes on the 2-disc set are:

  • "Love at First Fight" - Beauticruel uses a magic brush to make the Red Ranger fall in love with her.
  • "Catching Some Rays" - After visiting Koda's old cave, the Rangers accidentally releases a monster that makes people only focus on having a vacation.
  • "Recipe for Disaster" - Lord Arcanon arrives on Earth with his henchman to destroy the Power Rangers by taking control of their zords.
  • "Silver Secret" - The Silver Ranger introduces himself to the other Dino Charge Rangers.
  • "Wings of Danger" - Heckle escapes his cell and begins to recall his past life.
  • "Freaky Frightday" - A monster causes the Rangers to switch bodies.
  • "Worgworld"- Two new monsters, Conductro & Screech, causes anyone who hears their music to turn into zombies.
  • "The Rangers Rock" - The Rangers are turned into stone by the monster called Badussa.
  • "Edge of Extinction" - Sledge plants Greenzilla eggs all around the world, which leads to all the Dino Charge Rangers to race against time to stop the monsters from destroying Earth.
  • "End of Extinction" - To stop Sledge forever, the Rangers must travel back to the time of dinosaurs to retrieve the Energems.

Final Thoughts: It's a big week for Power Rangers fans as the big-budget remake will be hitting theaters on Thursday night and the current season, Power Rangers Ninja Steel, is airing on Nickelodeon. Then of course fans can also enjoy the Power Rangers Dino Super Charge: Extinction, which arrived on DVD last week and features the final the 10 episodes of the Dino Charge series; though it's missing the Halloween & Christmas specials. (Maybe the two will be released later!)

Typically, the Power Rangers volume releases features four to five episodes, but this year Lionsgate has released the Dino Super Charge season in two volumes containing 10 episodes each. As an older fan of the franchise, I prefer the 10 episodes releases.

Overall, I have enjoyed watching all the episodes on the Power Rangers Dino Super Charge: Extinction DVD. The only downside to the release is the lack of special features and extras. Nevertheless, I'm still recommending the title to other Power Ranger fans, young and old.
