Review: Star Wars: A New Dawn by John Jasckson Miller

While there are countless tie-in novels set in the Star Wars' universe, I have only read a handful of them. With next year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens hitting theaters (which is less than a year away), I have become re-interested in the franchise. I have even caught a few episodes of the new Disney XD animated series, Star Wars: Rebels.

One of the newest books in the franchise is Star Wars: A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller. It is set between episodes III and IV and serves as a prequel to Star Wars: Rebels. The novel centers on a bunch of misfit characters, Kanan, Hera, Skelly, and Zaluna, whom are trying to stop the Empire from taking over the galaxy.

While this is technically a prequel to the animated series, the book is written for adult readers/fans. The author, who happens to be a Star Wars fan, does a decent of writing an this prequel tale, but similar to other Star Wars novels that I have read, I became bored pretty quickly. Maybe it is because the main group of characters don't entice me or that the plot felt a little cliched. Now I mentioned that I have watched a few episodes of Star Wars: Rebels but I think the series is too silly, the characters are badly flawed and the animation looks cheaply done. The animated series is definitely aimed for younger children, while this book is aimed for adults; it doesn't make a bit of sense to me. Overall, Star Wars: A New Dawn is a disappointing read from start to finish.

2020 Update: Since I had reviewed this book in 2014, I'm now a fan of Star Wars: Rebels. I have yet to finish the series but I do own all the seasons on DVD. When I have more time, I would like to reread Star Wars: A New Dawn with a fresher mind.
