My Weekend Rush

When I was a kid, I always looked forward to the weekends as it meant I had two full days off from school. I would stay up late on Friday and Saturday nights watching low-budget horror movies and sleep in late the following mornings. I would go shopping with my mother on Saturdays, where I would normally buy a book and spend the rest of the day reading it. My many hobbies, such as puzzles, video games, plastic models, coin collecting, etc., would fill out the rest of the weekend.

How I miss those carefree weekends? Lately, my weekends have been nothing but stressful. Being single with no children, you would think I would have some free time on the weekends, but that is not the case with me.

As kids, we think we have too many responsibilities with school work, friends, and chores. As adults, we think having the weekend off from work would be less chaotic and more fun, which it can be at times, but the majority of the time we spend the weekend catching up on our lives.

I make plans every weekend, like catching up on those piled up James Paterson novels, start jogging, do some volunteer work, finish that cross-stitch project (Yes, I’m a straight man who can cross-stitch. Please don’t laugh.), watch the 13th season of Law & Order SVU on DVD, or maybe I want to get a master of arts in organizational leadership, so I can further my education, make some big bucks, and hire a personal assistant. But instead I spend my weekend running errands, I sometimes take my grandmother shopping, I do the laundry, clean the house, review a few books, reply to countless review requests, and schedule blog posts for the following week.

Maybe I need to take a week off, turn off the phone and the computer, lock the door, and just relax by catching up on DVDs, my personal reading, and my cross-stitching, which was originally suppose to reduce stress in the first place.

  1. I like to Cross Stitch too, but haven't done it in a long time. I think it led to stress with me because I'd get so far to realize that I had messed up, then I had to remove my stitches and start again;(

  2. Oh, geez. Those were the days, weren't they? *nostalgic sigh*

Your week off sounds fantastic, hope you find a way to cram that into your schedule soon.

Yes, going back and removing some stitches can be stressful at times.

Yes, those nostalgic feelings keep coming back. Maybe I should just spend a Saturday watching cartoons, but for what I've seen of the new cartoons, I probably wouldn't enjoy it.
