Set during the 1950's, Rob McLain has had to deal with much heartache. His father succumbed to cancer followed by his mother's sudden death. Years later, he marries the perfect woman and life seems to be great, but after the death of their first born child they separate.

Feeling that his life is spiritually empty, Rob drops out of school, quits his job, and leaves the life that he has known. He decides to go on a six-month canoe trip on the Canoba River. There are many challenges down the river for Rob that will question his faith in God. He meets several unique characters, such as Ed McNeal and Ted Moore, which will set him on a course of self-discovery as he bonds with these new friends.

Mindful of Him is about a man who has emotional cut himself off from his community and friends after several deaths in his family that makes him lose faith in God. Instead of talking to someone like a Preacher, a friend, or a shrink, he leaves everything that he has known and goes on a long canoe trip to find the meaning of life. Rob is an interesting character who I felt sorry for, but I kept wondering why he didn't just talk to someone about his problems. But then again, everyone reacts differently when they lose a loved one. Christianity is a big theme here as Rob questions why God has given him so many trials in his life.

I thought the book was well written and I enjoyed reading it, but the plot aims for a more male audience. I'm not for sure how female readers will react to the way Rob handles things. I still recommend Mindful of Him to other Christian readers.
