Yo!

My name’s Sykosa and I’ve only been alive, like, sixteen years, so I haven’t saved the rain forest or anything like that. (Though, I’d like to! SAVE THE RAINFOREST!!)

Anyhow, my father is a union leader for the ILWU. That’s the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. He used to have to lift a lot of stuff and work really hard, but now his job is mostly going to meetings and being stressed out about stuff. My mother is a homemaker, and we probably spent too much time together when I was a child, so now we fight sometimes. I’ve lived in the same house my entire life. It’s a modest property in Lake Forest Park, which is in the Seattle metropolitan area. As can be deciphered from the “lake,” “forest,” and, “park,” there’re a lot of lakes, forests, and parks in Lake Forest Park. People here are very boring and insufferable like that.

My best friend is named Niko. I met her when I was really young. I don’t quite know why we hit it off, but we did, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. I like Niko because she is very confident and she challenges me to do stuff I probably would never do. That said, we get into trouble sometimes, and she’s gotten me grounded more than once! Lastly, my boyfriend is named Tom. He’s very cute. He has long blond hair, blue eyes, and he’s tall. He makes me laugh and I feel things for him that I don’t feel for anybody else, also he saved me from danger once, but I don’t like to talk about that.

I suppose no life would be complete without some enemies! I don’t like to think of them as enemies, but being in high school, I’ve had some negative “encounters” with other girls. It’s a tad complicated, but basically Niko is extremely popular. She actually has her own clique, which I’m in, and we’re called the Queens. Though, there’re some other girls, who’re super stuck-up and think they’re so special, called the Bitches. One of them is Mackenzie. We’re both in a race for valedictorian, we’re both on swim team, and we both like Tom. Like I said, he dates me, but she is sometimes inappropriate around him and I don’t like it. Long story short, the Bitches and us Queens can get super catty with each other. We had a big fight last year that got out of control. No one intended for it to, it just did. A lot of people got hurt, emotionally and physically, as some of the boys got involved, and when boys get involved, people have to get punched for some reason.

That’s actually when Tom saved me, but like I said, I don’t talk about that!

I go to a school called The Academy. It’s a parochial prep-school that’s frequently ranked one of the finest high schools in America. The curriculum is insane and teachers expect us to learn a lot. My extra-circular activities are Model UN and, like I said, ladies swim. I don’t like swimming. My father did it when he was young and my family used to tell me about it, so I decided I wanted to be a swimmer, too. The issue is my dad was a great swimmer, but I’m not, and it sucks being so mediocre at something and having to try so hard to be so mediocre. Plus, a lot of Bitches are on the team, so I’ve had to deal with team drama and some bullying.

So… That’s my life! Except there’s other stuff.

I like Tom more than I let on. I think I might be in love with him. I have to clinch my teeth when I write that because, despite knowing it’s true, I feel like a locomotive engineer who just saw a broke down car on the crossing and has to slam on the brakes, the wheels sliding along the tracks, unable to stop the collision, which I know is going to happen. Tom and I—we’re gonna make love, I think. It’ll be my first time, if we do. You see, this weekend, there’s this big party at my friend Niko’s cottage, and there won’t be any parents there. Tom and I have talked about it a bit, but I’m scared. Last year, Tom really did save me, and he got hurt doing so. He has these scars along his arm and I feel responsible for them. I wish none of it had happened because then I could love him freely, but if none of it happened, we might never have hooked up, so I’m also kind of glad it happened, which makes me feel very, very evil and worthless.

It feels like it’s time to deal with “last year,” and this weekend is when it’s gonna happen. I have a lot of unresolved stuff with Niko, Mackenzie, Tom, and everyone else, so we’ll see what happens…
