Popcorn & Coffee: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half-Shell Heroes: Blast To The Past

Not Rated; 43 mins; $14.99; Amazon
Arriving today on DVD from Nickelodeon is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half-Shell Heroes: Blast To The Past; the 43-minute movie spin-off of the current TMNT animated series. There are no special features or extras. However, it does come with a bonus Nick Jr. DVD.

Based on the Playmates Toys' Half-Shell Heroes, "Blast To the Past" dropped the current computer-animation style and went with a 2D animation look. The four turtles are now half the size of what they are in the regular series, but they still have the same voices.

After finding crystals inside a meteorite that will help power up Donatello's new turtle vehicle, he accidentally sends himself along with his brothers, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael, as well as Bebop and Rocksteady, back in time to the Cretaceous Period.

The turtles don't exactly fit in with this era as they're constantly being chased by hungry dinosaurs. They would rather just head back home, but the meteorite's crystals have been destroyed.  To make things worse, their enemy, the Triceratons, are also there; forcing the dinosaurs to help them mine for crystals.

Leo, Donnie, Raph and Mikey must befriend a few dinosaurs and plan a last-minute attack on the Triceratons, in the hope of stopping the aliens' plans, rescue Bebop and Rocksteady (Yep, they're in trouble!) and grab a few crystals, so they can return home to NYC.

Popcorn & Coffee: The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar

$19.99; 44 minutes; TV-Y; Amazon
Wow! I didn't realize that Disney's The Lion King is now over twenty-years-old. It's considered to be one of Disney's best animation films. It spawned two direct-to-video sequels (The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1/2) and a spin-off television series, The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa, which the latter ended in 1999.

The franchise seemed to be over until Disney Junior aired a one-hour pilot movie called The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar last year; followed by a weekly series that started on Jan. 15th. The pilot is now available on to own on DVD and Digital HD. The only bonus feature on the single-disc is the music video "Here Comes the Lion Guard" by Beau Black. It also comes with a 'free" talking backpack pull.

"Return of the Roar" centers on Simba and Nala's young son, Kion, who has developed a mighty roar. Upon hearing about his son's roar, Simba announces that he will reinstate the Lion Guard, which was once led by his evil uncle, Scar, and Kion will be the new leader. The Lion Guard are responsible for protecting "The Circle of Life" in the kingdom.

Kion's first assignment as the Lion Guard leader is to enlist a team of the best lions, but sadly he can't find any that would be the perfect fit. However, he invite his friends to join  - Beshte (a hippopotamus, the strongest), Bunga (a honey badger, the bravest), Ono (cattle egret, the keenest of sight) and Fuli (cheetah, the fastest).

Review:

Arriving on DVD from Nickelodeon is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: NYC Showdown, featuring three exciting episodes from the 2003 series. There are no special features or extras on the single-disc.

The TMNT series was produced by produced by 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage Studios and aired from 2003 to 2009. There were were several three-episode DVD releases and a few season volumes released before Nickelodeon purchased the franchise. NYC Showdown and The Search For Splinter (available June 9, 2015) will mark the first DVD releases from the 2003 incarnation that Nickelodeon has released.

NYC Showdown features episodes 21, 22 & 23 (Return to New York, Pt. 1 -3). Review:

While it might seem like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been on television constantly since 1987, there was actually a hiatus between 1998 and 2003. The second animation series was produced by by 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage Studios. The series debuted in February 2003. It dropped all the slapstick of the original series and focused on story-arcs, which offered a darker plot, similar in style to the comic book series.

While the series was popular with fans of all ages as well as critics, it went downhill when it was retitled "Fast Forward," when the character designs were altered and the turtles were sent to the future. The series tried to bounce back by bringing the turtles back to the past in Back to the Sewer, but it was too little, too late as the series was canceled; though the turtles would return in the TV-Movie Turtles Forever.

Nickelodeon purchased the franchise in 2009 and launched a computer-animated series in 2012, which is currently in it's third season. During it's run, the 2003 series mostly received single-disc DVD releases, featuring only three episodes. A Season 4 two-disc DVD set was later released, though the first half the season was missing. Seasons 1 & 2 were eventually released in two volumes (2-discs) sets each. Fast Forward was released in a similar format as well as Ninja Tribunal (the fifth season).

On June 9, 2015, Nickelodeon will finally be releasing the 2003 series to DVD, but with three episodes per disc. The DVD titles will be The Search For Splinter and NYC Showdown (I'll have a separate review for it posted soon). The Search For Splinter features the very first episode "Things Change" and the two-part season one finale, "The Search for Splinter Parts 1 & 2."
