What can I say? It was a hectic week, and I didn't have time to read until Thanksgiving night. Friday was also a jam-packed day. Then, I crashed and burned for most of Saturday, though I did watch Survivor Series: War Games on Peacock.
So, what am I reading? It's the same book I mentioned last week, Chasing the Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar, a fictionalized true-crime yarn. I'm on page 247, and Goodreads says I've read 57%, which is wrong; my eyes tell me I'm 3/4 through the book.
I usually receive an ARC of each new ghostwritten V.C. Andrews novel, but not with Dreaming of Autumn Skies, published by Gallery Books back in October. I sent two requests for a review copy but received no replies. It may or may not have something to do with the little bitty fact that I've been somewhat harsh with Andrew Neiderman's recent works. (FYI: Andrew Neiderman has been the only ghostwriter since V.C. Andrews died in 1986.) Well, I ended up ordering Dreaming of Autumn Skies off of Amazon. I don't expect to get to it until after the holidays, so probably in January sometime.
What's New on the Bookshelf?
There were too many new releases this past week, and I picked up the ones I could find in the local stores—The House of Cross by James Patterson, Clive Cussler's The Corsican Shadow by Dirk Cussler, and The Hanging Party, and Blood Bounty of the Mountain Man by William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone.
My local library had a few new free books. I grabbed Deuces Down: A Wild Cards Novel edited by George R.R. Martin, Wild Cards XI: Dealer's Choice edited by Geroge R.R. Martin, Wild Cards XII: Turn of the Cards written by Victor Milan and edited by George R.R. Martin, and Active Measures by Marc Cameron.
My new Kindle ebooks are The Rack edited by Tom Deady, The Bad Seeds by C.J. Skuse, The Navigator by Clive Cussler with Paul Kemprecos, and The Cabinet of Curiosities by Preston & Child.
Wow, I had no idea (as someone who hasn't read any of the work) that V.C. Andrews stuff was still being published written by a ghostwriter. What a weird situation! All the same, I hope you enjoy it!
The last book written by V.C. Andrews was Dark Angel in 1986, but she was credited with writing Garden of Shadows and Fallen Hearts in 1987 and 1988, which were ghostwritten by Andrew Neiderman based on notes, outlines, and story fragments written by V.C. Andrews herself. I've never counted, but just by guessing, I'll say Neiderman has ghostwritten 70 or more books under V.C. Andrews' name.
Neiderman is in his 80s. His early works were good, but his ghostwriting stories have gone downhill in the last ten to fifteen years. The characters and plots are now carbon copies of older (and better) stories—the Gothic atmosphere has long since disappeared.
I don't want to start rumors, but I've read and heard things from other readers and reviewers being "blacklisted" or being outright harassed online by his "associations." Whether or not these accusations are true is another story, as anyone with a keyboard can say anything online.
I find it hard to read during the holidays. I was able to read a few chapters before people starting coming over Thanksgiving day, but no more was done once they arrived and by the time they left I was just worn out. So kudos to doing some reading that night!
Nice new reads! New to me ones but great finds! I hope you enjoy them all!
I had no idea VC Andrews was still being published. I stole my mom's copy back in the day and hid it under my mattress to sneak read when she wasn't around.
On the first of every month, when the coffee’s strong and the inbox is quiet, a little dispatch arrives. It carries the scent of last month’s book and movie reviews, the echoes of weekly blog hops, and the occasional ramble scribbled between sips. It’s not urgent. It’s not polished. But it’s honest—and it’s yours if you want it.
Bookworm extraordinaire with a caffeine addiction, I’ve spent years dodging reality in the pages of novels—from spine-tingling thrillers to Westerns that make me feel like a cowboy. ReplyDeleteMy weekly update post.

DeleteUpdate: I just looked it up: Neiderman's 100th V.C. Andrews title will be released next year.
DeleteSounds like Neiderman can't take a little criticism. Even great writers have some off books/times. Looks like you got some great reads in.
