[Blu-ray Review] — "Yellowstone: Season 5 (Part 1)"

Available to Buy on DVD and Blu-ray

This review has been a long time coming. On May 9th, Paramount Home Entertainment released the first half of the fifth season of the Paramount Network television series Yellowstone on DVD and Blu-ray. I was given a Blu-ray copy around that time. I planned to review the Blu-ray as soon as possible, but then the series got canceled; I lost motivation.

Here's a quick synopsis of Yellowstone: Season 5: Part 1: John Dutton (Kevin Costner, a two-time Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, and Emmy® winner), determined to defend his property and legacy at all costs, takes his struggle to the halls of power. But with increasing authority also comes greater scrutiny—of his family, his property, and the actions he takes to defend them. John, Beth, Kayce, Rip, and Jamie discover the cost of power as fresh dangers materialize and former adversaries reappear. Return to the ranch and watch the first eight episodes of Season 5, with never-before-seen additional material that includes rare cast and crew interviews.

The fifth season of the critically acclaimed ensemble drama from Academy Award® nominee Taylor Sheridan stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little, Ryan Bingham, and Gil Birmingham, with Mo Brings Plenty, Wendy Moniz, Jen Landon, and Kathryn Kelly promoted to series regulars, along with Jacki Weaver, Kyle Red Silverstein, Kylie Rogers, and Josh Lucas reprising their roles as young John Dutton in the new season, the ensemble cast also includes Dawn Olivieri, Lainey Wilson, Kai Caster, and Lilli Kay.

The Blu-ray features rare bonus materials and never-before-seen interviews with Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Luke Grimes, where they discuss their off-screen relationships, on-screen romance, and the intensity and intricacies that fictional characters encounter in the search for love. Additionally, learn more about the legendary music of Yellowstone and how Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian captured the grand panoramas and dramatic sights in a musical setting.

  • Undeniable Passion: Beth & Rip/Monica & Kayce (Only on DVD and Blu-ray; includes exclusive interviews.)
  • Musical Crosscurrents with Composers Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian (Only on DVD and Blu-ray; includes exclusive interviews)
  • Giving Everything to This Land: Yellowstone Returns (Only on DVD and Blu-ray)
  • Inside Yellowstone: Season 5
  • Inside the Real Yellowstone Ranch
  • Yellowstone: Inside the Phenomenon
  • Behind the Story for every episode
  • Stories from the Bunkhouse for every episode

Keeping my final thoughts short, I liked Yellowstone: Season 5—at least the first half. Who knows when we'll get the second half? It was supposed to be in the Summer of 2023, but then all the Kevin Costner rumors began, the series got canceled, a new spinoff got announced, and the writers and SAG saga happened.

Do you know what's peculiar? The Season 5 Blu-ray cover doesn't have Part 1 printed on it. A mistake? Or is Season Five: Part 2 going to become Season Six? It's unlikely due to casting contracts, but you never know.

If you're a Yellowstone fan, then you'll probably want to own Season 5 on Blu-ray. The storyline could be better, but I was more engaged than the previous season. For those who need to know, the picture and sound quality for the episodes are top-notch or the best you can get with a Blu-ray release. ╌★★★★✰
