I spent the early Tuesday morning hours watching the science-fiction romance Love and Monsters (PG-13; 108 minutes), which landed on Blu-ray last week from Paramount Home Entertainment. The film had a wide theatrical release set for February 2021, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the studio released it to video on demand and select theaters in October 2020. It received a "Certified Fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed and co-written by Michael Matthews, the film's setting is in a post-apocalyptic Earth that has been taken over by giant mutated amphibians and insects. Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner Trilogy) stars as Joel Dawson, a lovestruck protagonist venturing out of an underground bunker and going on an 85-mile journey to find his high school sweetheart, Aimee (played by Jessica Henwick). Along the way, he meets survival expert Clyde Dutton (played by Michael Rooker), a spunky girl named Minnow (played by Ariana Greenblatt), an emotional robot, a mourning dog, and bloody thirsty mutations.

Final Thoughts
I wasn't expecting much from Love and Monsters when I pushed play because I heard little to no buzz about it upon its release. Surprisingly, it's a heartwarming coming-to-age story that happens to feature CGI monsters. The good CGI! (FYI: This is coming from someone who doesn't like overblown Hollywood CGI.)
For a B-movie, the action acting is exceptional for the entire cast, though the standout is film's star Dylan O'Brien, who has recovered from his Maze Runner: The Death Curse accident.
Overall, Love and Monsters is a fun fantasy adventure from beginning to end.
