Sunday Post - Books of Blood, The Noel Letters, and The Talisman

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Good Morning, Everyone!

I don't know if anyone noticed, but I didn't write a Sunday Post for the last two weeks. I was sick on and off in October. And, it wasn't COVID-19 for those of you who might be wondering. It seems that getting a flu shot didn't prevent me from getting ill. Add in the wacky weather where one day it is 90 degrees, and the next day there is snow on the ground; I was feeling like crap for nearly two weeks. I had planned on having a 13 Days of Horror reading event in October, but due to the illness, I only had the strength and time to read two books, The Other Side by Diana Henstell and The Black Ambrosia by Elizabeth Engstrom.

Usually, I am in a better mood near Halloween because it's my favorite holiday. However, thanks to COVID-19, there was no Halloween yesterday, besides for the Halloween movie marathon on AMC. For the first time since I could remember, I didn't carve a pumpkin and roast pumpkins seeds. Though, I did buy three 2oz bags of DAVID Pumpkins Seeds (Roasted & Salted). And I didn't give out candy to the trick-or-treaters. (FYI: Yes, a few kids were walking down the street last night, even though my town outlawed Halloween for 2020.)

What Am I Reading?

I finished reading Let Him Go by Larry Willson yesterday afternoon. I received notification from OverDrive that Malorie by Josh Malerman was available to check out, so I went ahead and downloaded the eBook. It's a sequel to Bird Box, which I haven't read yet. I did have it reserved along with Malorie, but I ended up buying it on Kindle when it was on sale. It'll be my next read, followed by Malorie and Weeks: Book 2 by Jasyn T. Turley.

Also, I'll be reading the cookbook From Dill To Dracula sometime today for a book tour that I'll post on Tuesday.

What's in the Mail?

There were quite a few packages in the mail last month, starting with Ripley's Believe It Or Not: Mind Blown!, which I didn't request to review. I had reviewed a few other Ripley's titles in the past, so I'm on their reviewers mailing list. I'm not complaining at all. It was just a surprise when I received it.

The other books were Goosebumps SlappyWorld: My Friend Slappy by R.L. Stine, Whispering Hearts by V.C. Andrews, and The Noel Letters by Richard Paul Evans, all of which I had requested to review. The Goosebumps story is short, so I might be able to squeeze it in a day or two. The Noel Letters is a sappy Christmas story from one of my favorite authors, so I will probably fly through the pages. Lastly, Whispering Hearts is another ghostwritten V.C. Andrews's title. I didn't care much for the last few titles, so my expectation is low for this one.

Sometime ago, I received the Grant: The Complete Miniseries DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment and the Fatima DVD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. I have yet to watch either. I'll try to get them watched and reviewed this week.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

Sometime last month, I picked up Crash Test Girl by Kari Bryon (a.k.a. the girl from Mythbusters) at Dollar Tree. I found the new edition of Books of Blood: Volume One by Clive Barker at Walmart.

At the thrift store, I got Between Time and Terror: 17 Tales of Mystery and Suspense, Seven Masterpieces of Gothic Horror, Garfield's Insults, Putdowns & Slams by Jim Davis, The White Princess by Philippa Gregory, The Talisman by Stephen King & Peter Straub, and the audiobook Toys by James Patterson & Neil McMahon. The books only cost me 60 cents!

Recent titles on my Kindle are Deadly Friend by Diana Henstell, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Bird Box by Josh Malerman, The Haunting of Brynn Wilder by Wendy Webb, and Slash of the Titans: The Road to Freddy Vs. Jason by Dustin McNeill.

  6. Love your haul. We still carved pumpkins but the Royals are here and excited. Halloween was not banned, but our community set up baskets and tables at the end of their driveways filled with candy. Parents wore masks and kiddos went around from 6-8.

    Hope you are feeling better.

  7. Sorry to hear you were under the weather! Hope you feel better soon. They didn't outlaw Halloween in my city and our neighborhood did a huge block party, aka super spreader event. We didn't participate, but I did watch some scary movies. I watched What Lies Beneath which is one of my all-time favorite scary/mystery/ghost stories, so it was a great night! Enjoy your new books! :)

  8. I was bummed about Halloween too, we didn't get very many trickortreaters. Not super surprised about it though considering. Love that Halloween video!
