Sunday Post - Reading To Keep My Sanity!

Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer!

Happy Easter, Everyone!

What Am I Currently Reading?

I did a little bit of reading this past week. I read Star Trek: Picard: The Last Best Hope by Una McCormack. I'm planning on writing my review for it this afternoon. Then I read The Warning by James Patterson & Robison Wells, which is a paperback that's been collecting dust since Christmas. Lastly, a few nights ago, I started reading the nonfiction Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix. If you're a horror fan, this book is a must-have!

On my agenda this week are the titles: Masked Prey by John Sandford; Writer of the Future, Volume 36, and My One True North by Mill Johnson.

I haven't been in the mood to read romances, but I'm planning on reading My One True North this week. The publisher had contacted me about reviewing the eBook, so I agreed to do so.

Masked Prey is being released this week. I had received an ARC from the publisher last month, which I didn't request to review. Nevertheless, I'll be reading the novel sometime this week, which will mark the first title I have ever read written by John Sandford.

If I'm correct, Writers of the Future, Volume 36 was released last week. Right? Anyway, I was sent an ARC from the publisher. I'm going to slowly begin reading it soon. What do I mean by slowly? Well, I'm going to read one story, but put it aside, read something else, and then read the next story. Basically, it's multi-task reading.

Additionally, there are several titles on my Kindle Unlimited that I want to read this week!

What's In the Mail?

While I have requested to review a few titles from publishers, due to current events I highly doubt if I'll receive any physical ARCs for the next few months. The only title I received in the mail was the one I had ordered - Dog Diaries: Mission ImPAWsible by James Patterson and Steven Butler.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

There are several new titles on my Kindle – In The Tall Grass by Stephen King & Joe Hill, The White Plague by Frank Herbert, Fresh Meat by Christopher Kai, Woe To Live On by Daniel Woodrell, Best New Horror: 25th Anniversary Edition, The House of Brides by Jane Cockram, Full Throttle by Joe Hill, Seeing Red by David J. Schow, The Reaping by Bernard Taylor, and When Darkness Loves Us by Elizabeth Engstrom.

I already own Full Throttle on my Kobo, but it was on sale today as a daily Kindle deal for $2.99, so I went ahead and purchased it. A few nights ago, I watched the horror flick In The Tall Grass on Netflix, which for some weird reason I wasn't aware it was based on a novella by Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill, until the end-credits were rolling. I ended up getting the novella the next day.

Thanks to the Paperbacks from Hell, a small publishing company, Valancourt Books, launched a reprint line of old horror novels, titled "Paperbacks from Hell" with an introduction by Grady Hendrix in each book. A paperback for each title is around $15 to $16 and the Kindle eBooks are between $6.99 and $7.99. I've been eying these books for a while now and finally I decided to get two titles - The Reaping and When Darkness Loves Us.

Have you ever seen the western Ride with the Devil (1999) starring Tobey Maguire and Jewel? It's one of my favorite westerns. It's based on the novel Woe To Live By. Oddly, no library around my area as ever gotten the book, even the setting is in Missouri and Kansas, and I've never been able to find it at any bookstores. Luckily, I noticed it was on sale on Kindle for $4.99!

People keep recommending that I read Frank Herbert's novels. I attempted to read the original Dune novel 20+ years ago, but I only got a few chapters into it before I made the decision that I just didn't like it. Nevertheless, I did get The White Plague by the author. It was on sale, so I thought I would give the author another try.

Seeing Red is an early '80s splatterpunk horror novel that I've heard about but have never read. Fresh Meat is also a newer novella in the same genre that was free on Kindle. It should be a no-brainer why I wanted to read Best New Horror: 25th Anniversary Edition. I found The House of Brides on sale today. I wasn't going to get it, but I talked myself into it.

  2. Happy Easter!! I've never read any of the Writers of the Future. I imagine there are some good stories in there...

I had trouble with Dune too. On paper it seems like a story I would like, but I struggled...

    1. I haven't started reading the new Writer of the Future yet, but past volumes have had some good stories in them.

Good, it's not just me then! I've seen the '80s Dune movie and I had no clue what exactly was going on. Wasn't the "spice" supposed to have represented oil?

    2. I think it might have? To be honest I'm so out of the loop, I read it years ago (and saw the movie too but don't remember everything...)

  3. I just read and reviewed Hendrix’s latest, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires which was interesting.
I wasn’t a fan of The House of Brides.

Wishing you a great reading week and good health

    1. I had requested to review The Southern Book Club's Guide To Slaying Vampires, but I never heard back from publisher. I do have a few other titles by Grady Hendrix on my Kindle, though I haven't read any of them yet.

I almost didn't buy The House of Brides due to the negative reviews, but I talked myself into getting it.
