DVD Revidew - Savage Creatures

There's nothing better to do when you cannot sleep on a cold winter's night than watching a vampire flick. Right? Especially, when it has cannibals, zombies and aliens!

I'm referring to the horror-comedy Savage Creatures (Not Rated; 76 minutes) from writer-director Richard Lowry, which just landed on DVD and movieSPREE Digital this month by ITN Distribution and  Mill Creek Entertainment. The 76-minute film was produced by Zado Productions and Andromeda Pictures.

The movie centers around two female vampires, Rose and Ursula (played by Kelly Brown and Victoria Steadman), hitchhiking in the countryside until they are picked up by Liz and her adult son Darby (played by Cean Okada and Ryan Quinn Adams), who invite the girls to stay at their home for the night... and they just happened to be religious cannibals.

Since Rose and Ursula are already undead, they can pretty much take care of themselves, so the cannibals are not much of a threat to them. However, what they do fear are the aliens who have invaded Earth and are turning humans into bloodthirsty zombies!

Final Thoughts

Let me start out by mentioning the little bitty fact that the female vampire and tentacles on DVD cover art have nothing to do with this movie as well as the town in the background. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool cover but it's misleading!

Savage Creatures is actually a fun movie if you like low budget B-level horror. And it's not a straight-up horror either as there's some humor tossed into the mix. The plot is off the wall with vampires, zombies, aliens, and a mute gun-totting nun. While the acting isn't the greatest, the two leads, Kelly Brown and Victoria Steadman, have great chemistry together.

I'm not for sure what the total budget was for this movie but it was obviously very limited. I appreciate that old school practical effects were used instead of cheap CGI. There's a VFX Breakdown featurette on DVD that shows how the director and his crew made the effects.

Overall, I had a blast watching Savage Creatures. Sure, the dialogue is clunky at times but the wacky plot, cheap special effects, and a few funny moments made it entertaining.
