Description
Eleven-year-old orphan Félicie (Fanning) has one dream — to go to Paris and become a dancer. Her best friend, Victor (Wolff), an imaginative, exuberant boy with a passion for creating, has a dream of his own — to become a famous inventor. In a leap of faith, Victor and Félicie leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions. But there’s a catch: Félicie must pretend to be the child of a wealthy family in order to gain admittance to the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School in Paris. And with no professional dance training, she quickly learns that talent alone is not enough to overcome the ruthless, conniving attitudes of her fellow classmates, led by the devious Camille Le Haut (Ziegler). Determined to succeed, Félicie finds her mentor in the tough and mysterious school custodian, Odette (Jepsen), who, along with Victor’s encouraging friendship, help her reach for the stars.

My Thoughts

If you follow my blog regularly, then you would know my Holiday Gift Guide for 2017 ended on the 16th, so you might be wondering why I'm featuring another post today. Well, I was planning on featuring a review for the Leap! Blu-ray at the start of my blog's Holiday Gift Guide, but for some reason or another I didn't receive a copy from Lionsgate; well, until a copy arrived on doorsteps on Thursday.

Leap! is a computer-animated film that was released to theaters in the United States back in late August. If you've never heard of the film, well, then you're not the only one; I've never heard of the movie either. I don't recall seeing one single advertisement or trailer for it. From my understanding the film was released in France and the UK in late 2016 under the title Ballerina. The voice-cast included Elle Fanning, Dane DeHaan, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Maddie Ziegler. For the United States' release the film's title was changed to Leap!, and Mel Brooks, Kate McKinnon, and Nat Wolff (who replaced DeHann as the voice of Victor) were added to the voice-cast.

The film centers on two orphans Félicie and Victor escaping the orphanage and traveling to Paris, where Félicie dreams of attending the famous Opera Ballet School. The two friends accidentally go their separate ways, though they still meet up from time to time. Victor tries to become an inventor's apprentice, while Félicie lies her way into the ballet school. Though she's never had any dancing training, she's determined to win a spot in the school's production of The Nutcracker.

I didn't know what to expect from the film when I started watching the Blu-ray yesterday morning. I'm not into dancing, so the move's theme didn't exactly appeal to me, but I do like animated movies, so thought I would at least give the film a try.

The plot is well-written, though there are a few predictable scenes. Félicie, aka the main character, is likeable and should appeal to kids. The computer-animation is excellent, and the entire voice-cast does a wonderful job in their roles.

The picture and sound quality on the Blu-ray are topnotch. The only downside I found with the Blu-ray is the lack of special features or extras. There are a few featurettes on the disc, but not many.

Overall, I enjoyed watching Leap! on Blu-ray. It's a heartwarming animated film that the whole family can enjoy watching together. It would make a great stocking stuffer for Christmas!
