The classic horror story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde gets a chilling new twist when seen through the eyes of Dr. Jekyll's devoted maid, Mary Reilly.

 My Thoughts

Originally, I had planned on featuring a review for the recently released Mary Reilly Blu-ray during my blog's Halloween event back in October, but after watching the film I decided to post the review during this year's Holiday Gift Guide.

Directed by Stephen Frears and released to theaters in 1996, Mary Reilly is a Gothic horror flick based on the novel of the same name by Valerie Martin, which also inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

The film centers on a young maid named Mary Reilly (played by Julia Roberts), who's working in the household owned by Dr. Jekyll (played by John Malkovich). After Dr. Jekyll announces he will be bringing in an assistant, Mr. Hyde (also played by John Malkovich), strange things begin to occur, including a few deaths.

After a few run ins with the mysterious Mr. Hyde, Mary become fascinated him, and Mr. Hyde becomes obsessed her!

Despite receiving negative reviews from critics and being a box-office flop in 1996, I have always liked the film. It has the perfect blend of Gothic-horror and a hint of romance (though there is no romance present). Both the film's stars (Julia Roberts & John Malkovich) give great performances.

Overall, Mary Reilly is underrated Gothic-horror flick that I enjoyed watching. The picture & sound quality on the Blu-ray are excellent. The only downside to the release is that there are no special features on it.
