Review - Grounded Hearts by Jeanne M. Dickson

Water Press; 345 pages; Buy Link; Blog Tour

Now available from Waterfall Press is the historical drama Grounded Hearts by Jeanne M. Dickson.

Set in Ireland during WWII, the novel centers on a widowed midwife Nan O'Neil finding an injured Canadian RAF pilot, Dutch Whitney, at her door. Any solider discovered in Ireland must be reported and interned, which is a major problem for Nan, as she doesn't want to be caught harboring a combatant.

Nevertheless, Nan welcomes Dutch into her home, where she tends to his wounds and gives him refuge. Of course this is a love story, so you can probably guess that romantic feelings develop between Nan and Dutch. The longer Dutch stays with her, the more he puts her life in jeopardy.

Final Thoughts

While I'm not the biggest fan of books set during WWII, I do occasionally read a novel that is set during that era. Just by glancing at the cover alone, I would have never guessed Grounded Hearts was set in Ireland. Typically, WWII romances are set in Europe or France, so I thought the Ireland setting was a breath of fresh air for the genre. Yes, the plot of a widow finding a wounded solider does sound a little cliched, but the author does an excellent job with this tale; giving us readers interesting characters, well-written descriptions, and snappy dialogue.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with Grounded Hearts. I was expecting a generic story, but instead I read a wonderful WWII drama with plenty of heart.
