Interview & Giveaway with Jenn Windrow

Now available from Muse It Up Publishing is the urban fantasy Evil's Unlikely Assassin by Jenn Windrow.

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her new novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

I liked to make up stories as a kid, I guess some people call that lying. 😀 Honestly, I’ve always loved to read, and had so many stories of my own in my head that I just decided to try to get them out on paper and see what happened. I didn’t get serious until my youngest entered kindergarten then, writing was a bit difficult with two little ones in the house and Dora the Explorer always playing in the background.

What was your first book/story published?

Struck By Eros was my first novel published, but I had a short story called Swallowed By Darkness published in a small online magazine. Since then I’ve taken that story and placed it on Amazon myself.

What inspired you to write Evil’s Unlikely Assassin?

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Yes. Seriously. In the old version they play at Christmas every year, there is a character names Hermy. Hermy doesn’t want to be an elf, Hermy wants to be a dentist. I wondered what would happen if a vampire didn’t want to be a vampire. How would they become human again?

What character in Evil’s Unlikely Assassin is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

I wish I could say the kick butt vampire, but that would be a lie. I think I’m most like Nathan. He’s loyal, but a total smart ass. He’ll do anything for anyone that he loves. Not saying Alexis wouldn’t but I can’t wield a sword like she does.

What is your favorite part in Evil’s Unlikely Assassin?

Chapter two. It would be a spoiler to give it away, but it was my favorite scene to write, also one of the hardest. I took a risk, and it played off. I’m really proud of it.

What was the hardest part to write?

It’s really hard for me to write visceral emotions, add to that a character that doesn’t have a beating heart. I had to figure out how to give a vampire, who doesn’t having a working system like us some emotion. Not tell about the emotion, but make the reader feel what she was feeling.

What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?

Being a mom. That’s the answer that could happen, otherwise I would say being Wonder Woman. 😀 Then I would get to kiss Chris Pine.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

I read my reviews. I know I shouldn’t but I do. I guess when I started reading them it was to see if I was a sucky writer, but mostly now I read them to see if readers are connecting with my story. A ton of negatives means I am doing something wrong, a bunch of positives means keep going the way I am.

What well-known writers do you admire most?

Jeaniene Frost, Darynda Jones, Karen Marie Moning, Kelley Armstrong, JR Ward.

Do you have any other books/stories in the works?

I am finishing up the third book in my Redeeming Cupid series, Pricked By Thorns. Once that is off to my publisher, I am going to start the second book in this series, Evil’s Ultimate Huntress. Once that’s done, I have another Urban Fantasy that I want to get back to called Tweaking Talisman. My goal is to have the two Urban Fantasies out next year before Comicon.

About the Author

Jenn Windrow loves characters that have a pinch of spunk, a dash of attitude, and a large dollop of sex appeal. Top it all off with a huge heaping helping of snark, and you've got the ingredients for the kind of fast paced stories she loves to read and write. Home is a suburb of it's-so-hot-my-shoes-have-melted-to-the-pavement Phoenix. Where she lives with her husband, two daughters, and a slew of animals that seem to keep following her home, at least that's what she claims.

Jenn's Urban Fantasy, EVIL’S UNLIKELY ASSASSIN won the RWA Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal (FF&P), “On The Far Side” writing contest in July 2014, top 5 in the RWA Desert Rose, “Realizing the Dream” writing contest, and finaled in the Houston Writers Guild annual writing contest in April 2014. It was also selected as first runner up in Writers Type’s First Chapter Contest in April 2013.

Her Paranormal Romance, STRUCK BY EROS placed first in the RWA’s Golden Pen Contest, third in the Ruby Slippered Sisterhoods Make it Golden contest, and fourth in the West Coast Romance Writers Beacon contest.
