Interview & Giveaway with Norman Green, author of Sick Like That

Being released on paperback on July 11th from Witness Impulse is the mystery SICK LIKE THAT, An Alessandra Martillo Mystery, by Norman Green.

The author has taken a few minutes out of his busy schedule for a Q&A about his novel.

When did you become interested in storytelling?

I’ve always been interested in telling stories, it’s the most human activity there is.

What was your first book/story published?

‘Shooting Dr. Jack.’

What inspired you to write SICK LIKE THAT?

I’d resisted writing anything with a ‘private eye’ in it, but I wondered what would happen if you did it from a female perspective, especially a female who came from the inner city, who maybe isn’t the biggest proponent of law enforcement.

What character in SICK LIKE THAT is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

The protagonist, Alessandra Martillo, fascinates me because I gave her all of my best character flaws.

What is your favorite part in SICK LIKE THAT?

The opening scene was a blast to write.

What was the hardest part to write?

It took a while to get the ending to where it felt right.

What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author?

For what it’s worth, I think an author has to have other jobs, other careers, I couldn’t sit in my basement and write anything interesting. I’ve had a ton of different jobs in my life.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

I would like to say that I don’t read reviews, but that would be a lie, and I think any writer who tells you that is pulling your chain. And I don’t think it hurts to listen to criticism, but you have to have an ego strong enough, because you’re always going to have people who don’t understand what you’re doing.

What well-known writers do you admire most?

JD MacDonald, Lawrence Block, Larry Niven, Ursula LeGuin, Malcolm Gladwell, Carlo Rovelli, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and lots more.

Do you have any other books/stories in the works?

I always have something cooking. My next book is ‘Shadow of a Thief,’ which is about an addict/thief who’s trying to understand who he is and why he’s here.
