Q&A with Sheri Queen, author of Bounty Huntress

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel. 

When did you become interested in storytelling? 

I’ve always had an interest in storytelling, but didn’t pursue writing to share stories with others until the last ten years. Books were my best friend as a kid living in a small town, so the transition to writing the stories was a natural one. 

What was your first book/story published? 

I wrote a creative non-fiction story called The Gift, which was about finding the perfect way to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday. It focused on life in a small town and how giving of yourself is the best present you could get for someone. It was published in 2013 in a college journal-- Penn State’s From the Fallout Shelter. 

What inspired you to write Bounty Huntress?
 

Bounty Huntress is part of a multi-author, shared world novella series. As such I had certain criteria to follow. The main thing was to use a paranormal being that none of the others in the series was using—we each had to use a different primary paranormal being. I’d read an article about the Lykoi cats and knew I had to create a paranormal creature based on them. The idea of a “werewolf” cat was fun to play with and make my own in the story. 

What character in Bounty Huntress is the most/least like you, and in what ways? 

I suppose the main character Janda Gray is in some way similar to me. She grew up not feeling like she fit in anyplace. My adolescent years, while infinitely better than hers, did leave me feeling out of place. It took many years for me to be comfortable with who I am. I think a lot of us feel the same way, which is why I like Janda’s character. I hope others can connect with her on some level. 

What is your favorite part in Bounty Huntress?

I have several and for different reasons. I’d say that Janda’s first meeting with her target is a definite favorite. She’s attracted to him and annoyed by him, which sets her up for conflict on multiple levels. 

What was the hardest part to write? 

The end was the hardest because I didn’t want it to end. I wanted to keep going with the story, but I had a word count requirement that I’d agreed to when I signed on with the multi-author series. And as we know, all good things must come to an end---then we write the next book. Lol. 

What would your ideal career be, if you couldn't be an author? 

Does filthy rich count as a career? If it does, then I wouldn’t mind having a few million. It would allow me to help others less fortunate. Plus I could hire someone else to cook and clean.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing? 

I do, since it helps me hone in on weaknesses in my writing as a new author. I look for commonalities in the reviews. You can never please everyone, but becoming a better writer is important to me. 

What well-known writers do you admire most?

Of course, JK Rowling. When you look at how hard a life she had and how she kept going after her dream—even when she got tons of rejections—you have to admire her. Now that she’s made it big, she’s also giving back to others. She’s a role model for young people, she’s fostered a love for reading in more than one generation, and she’s a nice person.

I also admire Nora Roberts. She’s a woman who is a self-taught writer. She didn’t let the “rules” dictate her writing style. She’s a prolific writer, an entrepreneur, and I love her bookstore. 

Do you have any other books/stories in the works?

I’m busy working on Janda’s next adventure. This one will be longer and will dig deeper into her life, as well as focus on her role as a Sleepy Hollow Hunter. It won’t be part of the multi-author event, so I have a lot more leeway to tell her story.
