Q&A with Aubrie L. Nixon, author Darkness Whispers

Now available is the fantasy novel Darkness Whispers, book one in The Darkness Trilogy by author Aubrie L. Nixon.

The author has taken a few minutes out of her busy schedule for a Q&A about her newest novel.

When did you first become interested in storytelling?

I am a really good liar. I always have been. I always made up stories and adventures that I had been on. I even had this whole story where Daniel Radcliffe ( Harry Potter) was my cousin, and I used to handwrite letters from him and show them to everyone in my fourth grade class. The teacher finally called my parents to ask if it was true. I figured I should use my story telling talents and put them to good use.

What was your first book/story published?

Darkness Whispers is my debut novel. It was released November 2, 2016. It is the first book in a planned trilogy, along with one, maybe two accompanying novellas.

What inspired you to write Darkness Whispers?

In November of 2015 I went to my first author event to meet Leigh Bardugo. She looked me dead in the eyes and told me that I looked like a writer. I had always enjoyed storytelling and wanted to write books. But, I had never actually thought about doing it seriously. That night, I went home and started on a story i had been playing in my head for years. Thus came Darkness Whispers.

What character in Darkness Whispers is the most/least like you and it what ways?

Everyone asks me if I am Sephera. I always laugh, because I guess others perceive me as a sarcastic, cold, food loving, killer. Which is fine, I get it. But, I see myself most in Daegan and Chantry. I feel like if I was in some if the same situations as Daegan, I would react the same way he does. There are reasons why he acts the way he does, things I resonate with. Chantry represents my need to be girly and silly while still maintaining my strong, independent side. She reminds me its absolutely okay to be both!

What is your favorite part in Darkness Whispers?

The skinny dipping scene, hands down. I loved writing it, and I laugh every time I read it.

What was the hardest part to write?

The ending. I knew what needed to happen, but I was having such a hard time putting it into words. I could see it, clear as day. But actually writing it took me a while. I probably re wrote it a dozen times.

What would your ideal career be if you couldn’t be an author?

A food critic or movie reviewer. NO! A literary agent, can I be all 3?

Do you read reviews of you books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

I read every single review. I know a lot of authors who don’t do that, but I do. I feel like they all help you become better at writing. There is a reason the reader is feeling the way they do whether its good or bad. Its my job to figure out why. That being said, there are going to be people who don’t like what you have written, and even if you’ve done your best, they just aren’t going to like it. Its best to let those reviews go.

What well-known writers do you admire most?

Sarah J Maas, Leigh Bardugo, Julie Eshbaugh, Amelia Hutchins, Angela Roquet all of these ladies have helped shape and inspire me and my writing in one way or another.

Do you have any other books or stories in the works?

I am currently working on Daegan’s novella titled Warrior of Darkness. I am also working on book two in the Darkness trilogy.
