Review - The V Girl by Mya Robarts

If you haven't noticed, the vampire & werewolf craze in the YA fiction market has finally started to wind down, but it has been replaced with a new fad - dystopian post-apocalyptic worlds; with the two most popular franchises being The Hunger Games and The Divergent Series.

I haven't read very many dystopian novels, except for the first Hunger Games and the City of Ember series. I have nothing against the books in this genre, but it's just not something that I want to read very often.

By now you might be wondering why in the world would I be reviewing The V Girl, which is obviously set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future. Well, for starters, I was intrigued by the cover art; plus, the synopsis sounded like a different than what I typically read, so I thought I would at least give it a try.

Set in the post-apocalyptic North America, rape and sexual slavery are now legal. The heroine of this tale is Lila Velez, a teenager living in Starville with her family. Like other girls her age, she's dreading being drafted into the Patriots vs. Nats war that's taking place outside of the city. If you're not married by time of your eighteenth birthday, then you become a solider. If Lila goes off to war, she's most likely to be raped and that's not how she wants to lose her virginity.

With word going around is that the troops are headed to Starville, Lila is desperate to lose her virginity with someone that she cares deeply about, her friend Rey, one of the most attractive young men in town. No, she doesn't love him, but he's the closet thing to a boyfriend that she has. Unfortunately, her plans become in jeopardy when she keeps running into the former solider, Aleksey Fürst, who offers an alternative solution. 

I hear steps approaching and I wade away. In no time I find myself far from where I left my clothes. My best chance to safely get out of this situation is to avoid a fight. I can remain hidden if I move to the other side of the river behind the rocks. If soldiers see me so vulnerable and naked, I’m doomed.  (Excerpt from The V Girl)

 

Final Thoughts: Despite the fact that The V Girl is labeled as an YA novel, I wouldn't recommend anyone under the age 18 to read this due to it's graphic nature. That being said, I personally liked reading the novel. The author, Mya Robarts, has a talent of crafting an imaginative world unlike any that you have seen in other dystopian books. The narration is from the main character, Lila, and as I read chapter by chapter, I easily connected with her (and this is coming from a male reader!). Overall, The V Girl is one of the more original novels that I have read in awhile. Sure, it has starvation, death, slavery, sexual abuse and other dark themes, but it's still worth taking the time to read it.
