Review:

Now available to own on Bluray + Digital HD is the romantic-drama The Longest Ride. Directed by George Tillman, Jr., the film stars Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland), Scott Eastwood, Jack Huston, Oona Chaplin and Alan Alda. Special Features include deleted & extended scenes, audio commentary by director George Tilman, Jr. and actress Oona Chaplin, A Writer's Journey: A Day in the Life of Nicholas Sparks, Beyond the Ride, Bringing It to Life, Meet the Reel Bull Riders, Luke's Bull Riding School and a gallery.

Based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, The Longest Ride centers soon-to-be college graduate Sophia Danko (played by Britt Robertson), who attends a rodeo with her best friend Marcia (played by Melissa Benois). Afterward, she bumps into the former bull rider champion Luke  Collins (played by Scott Eastwood) and sparks instantly fly between the two. Though Sophia is going to head off to New York for an internship at an art galley in two months, she starts a romantic relationship with Scott.

Late one night after a date, they come across a car accident and Scott helps rescue an elderly man named Ira Levinson (played by Alan Alda). Just as Scott pulls Ira out, he mumbles about a box in his car, so Sophia searches the car and finds the box.

It doesn't take very  long for Sophia to find a connection with Ira through the letters that were in the old box. Through several visits, Ira tells her the love story between his late-wife Ruth (played by Oona Chaplin) and his younger self (played by Jack Huston) as well as the passion his wife had for art and their desire to have a family that would never be.

As Sophia prepares to move to New York, Scott must decide what is more important - his rodeo career or starting a life with Sophia.

Besides from Message in the Bottle and The Notebook, I tend to avoid Nicholas Sparks films and not because it's romantic flick. It's because normally his books ends with somebody dying, so most likely the film will end the same way. The Longest Ride caught my attention due to the fact that Clint Eastwood's son, Scott, was starring it as well as the lovely Britt Robertson (former cast-member of Under the Dome). I've never read the book, so I didn't know what to expect when I started watching the film yesterday morning. I guess part of me figured it would a sappy, cliched movie, but I was surprisingly wrong. Though I'm not a rodeo fan, I enjoyed watching the movie. I thought it was well-acted and the plot had enough depth to keep me interested for the 128 minutes running time. Overall, The Longest Ride is a heartfelt romance that deserves a fresher look on Blu-ray.
