Review - Promise to Cherish by Elizabeth Blyer Younts

From Elizabeth Byler Younts, the author of Promise to Return, comes the exciting sequel, A Promise to Cherish, from Howard Books. I enjoyed reading the first book in the series, so I eagerly signed up to review the sequel. Unfortunately, a few things came up and I'm just now getting to writing this review.

A Promise to Cherish centers on a nurse named Christine Freeman, who is working as the member of the Civilian Public Service unit at the Hudson River State Hospital (a mental hospital) in 1945. After being sexually assaulted by an old acquaintance (Jack), she learns that she is pregnant. Too make matters worse, she is fired from her job. She tries to get help from her parents, but they just want to send her to a home for unwed mothers.

Christine has no choice, but to ask her friend Eli for help. Eli is an Amish man with his own set of problems, but he doesn't hesitate to help Christine, who he has feelings for. Being in the Civilian Public Service has changed him for the good, but the Amish community sees otherwise.

Nevertheless, the community does accept Christine and she quickly makes several friends. She even starts to have romantic feelings for Eli. Just as she starts to pick up the pieces to her life, Jack tracks her down.

Wow! This is definitely a very different novel than the first installment, but I'm not complaining at all as I absolutely loved the sequel. The author did a wonderful job creating realistic characters and developing an intriguing plot that is set towards the end of WWII. Typically, I'm not the biggest fan of novels set in this era, but thanks to the author's great writing skills, it didn't bother me all. Overall, A Promise to Cherish is an outstanding novel with "true depth" to the characters!
