Review:

Arriving on DVD & Blu-ray on Tuesday November 11, 2014 from Image Entertainment is the action-comedy Drive Hard. The film is directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and stars John Cusack and Thomas Jane. There are no exras or special features.

Originally the film was suppose to be set in the United States with  Jean Claude Van Damme, but after the actor dropped out of the project, the director, Brian Trenchard-Smith, rewrote the script when John Cusack became available. The movie was filmed in 18 days in Queensland, Australia.

Drive Hard centers on a former American race car driver, Peter Roberts (played by Thomas Jane), who now spends his days as a driving instructor in Australia that is until his newest student Simon Keller (played by John Cusack) steps into his life. He is unaware that Simon is a thief, well, until he is forced by gunpoint to be a getaway driver when Simon steals $9 million dollars.

Through Peter's eyes,he has been kidnapped, but the through the media eyes, he is Simon's accomplice. With federal agents and corrupted cops on their trail, Peter and Simon have no other choice but to trust each other if they plan on getting out this alive.

While the cover of Drive Hard may look like the next Fast & Furious film, the actual film is cross between Midnight Run and Smokey and the Bandit, but on a lower budget. While John Cusack and Thomas Jane have always been above average actors, their film careers have been mostly direct-to-DVD titles over the years, which a few that I have seen weren't very good. For the most part Drive Hard is filmed well and both Cusack and Jane have a bit of fun with their characters. If you are expecting a lot of action, then you are going to be disappointed as the two main characters mostly spend their time talking in a car, sort like last year's getaway, except not as bad. Overall, Drive Hard isn't going to win an awards, but the chemistry between the stars makes up for the plot's shortcomings.

  1. Seeing that this film stars both of these exceptional actors, Cusack and Jane, I would not even hesitate to own a copy of this film. Being that these actors have decided to be a part of this film, tells me the will be worth my attention. Cusack and Jane are actors of pose in their chosen field and deliver their goods full tilt in all of their films. Drive Hard, thumbs up.
