Review:

Arriving Tuesday August 12, 2014 is the documentary Disneynature Bears from directors Alastair Fothergill (Earth, African Cats, Chimpanzee) and Keith Scholey (African Cats). The film is narrated by John C. Reilly. Bonus Features on the Blu-ray are Welcome to Alaska, The Future For Bears, A Guide To Living With Bears and How Did They Film That?. The DVD features the "Carry On" Music Video by Olivia Holt.

The documentary centers on a female grizzly bear (Sky) and her two cubs (Amber and Scout) in the Katmai National Park in Alaska, as the family leaves their den on a mountain scope in search for food. Leaving a mountainside is not an easy task for a bear, as there can be an avalanches at any second.

As the trio head into the valley, they encounter other bears, which some have tempers and can attack the cubs at any minute, especially the bear Magnus. Sky always has her eye on her cubs, especially when the grey wolf, Tikaani, is near them.

Sky teaches her young ones how to hunt for clams, how to swim and how to avoid dangers. As the spring turns into the summer, Sky searches for streams that will contain salmon. She must store enough fat during the summer and fall, so she will be able to nurse her cubs during the winter hibernation.

I have to admit that I'm not a person who watches nature documentaries, but when a review copy for Disneynature Bears became available, I thought I would give it a try, so I signed up to review it. The camera crew followed Sky and her cubs on their journey from Katmai National Park and to Lake Clark National Park in Alaska, then back to their mountainside den in Katmai National Park. The documentary is beautifully shot, showcasing the wonderful landscape of Alaska. My first thoughts was that the film would be boring, but surprisingly I found myself instantly hooked into it. Actually, I thought the film was too short, as it could have been twenty-minutes longer. Overall, Disneynature Bears is heartfelt documentary showing the struggles bears go through to stay alive and feed their cubs.
