Review:

In 1971, Betsie Troyer had high hopes of marrying her sweetheart Charley Yoder, which is until a family secret crashes her dream! Her parents leave the Amish country while Betsie and her sister Sadie are left with their aunt, until their parents return, if they ever do, since they have left the Amish faith.

Her life takes an unexpected turn when she takes board with an English family, the Sullivan’s. The mother of the family practically abandons the family in a pursuit of becoming an actress. Betsie feels as if she was brought to this family for a reason and helps out around the house, even befriending the twelve-year-old daughter, Shelia, and the oldest, Michael, who has recently dropped out of college, something that has upset his father. Since this is the 70s, Michael is afraid of being drafted into the Army.

Betsie is trying to keep her parent's secret from coming out, but at the same time she has decided to stay true to the Amish faith, no matter what situations and challenges are thrown at her.

I have read a lot of Amish fiction over the years, some are good and others are average, but there has never been one book to truly disappoint me, and I'm glad to say The Bargain didn't disappoint me. Actually, I was sent an advanced copy several months back, so I have had this book read for quite sometime, but it slipped my mind to have the review written ahead of time. You might think I would have forgotten about the book by now because of all the books I read/review a month, but The Bargain has stayed with my thoughts long after I had finished reading it. Stephanie Reed has a natural talent for storytelling and it really shows in The Bargain. Typically, an Amish book is set in the 1800s, WWII, or in modern times, but this is the first one I have read that has been set in the 70s with the plot mentioning the Vietnam War and the Kent State Massacre. Overall, The Bargain is a well written Amish fiction with a blend of romance and drama that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.

*Disclaimer - I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
