Review:

It's hard to believe that a cartoon featuring a sponge as the main character has been on nearly fifteen years, but the series has become popular with both kids and adults. Arriving on DVD & Blu-ray this Tuesday, October 15, 2013 is the 22-minute It's A SpongeBob Christmas! special, which premiered last November on CBS and later aired on Nickelodeon in December 2012! The special uses stop motion, a similar animation style that has been used on classic Christmas specials such as Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, The Year Without Santa Claus and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.

Its Christmas Eve in Bikini Bottom, Plankton knows he's on Santa's naughty list, but he has a plan to change that. He has discovered a new element called "jerktonium" and puts the element into fruitcakes, but he needs to test it to see if it will work. Of course, Plankton gives SpongeBob's a fruitcake, but it doesn't change SpongeBob, as he is happy as ever. Thinking he had failed, Plankton gives his fruitcake dispenser to SpongeBob.

SpongeBob happily accepts the fruitcake dispenser and goes around Bikini Bottom giving away fruitcake, but it turns the population of Bikini Bottom into jerks; therefore putting SpongeBob and everyone else on Santa's naughty list, making Plankton look a little bit nicer.

Bonus episodes on the Blu-ray are:
  • Ripped Pants

  • Texas
  • The Graveyard Shift

  • Dying forPie

  • Club SpongeBob

Blu-ray and DVD:
  • Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

  • "Hot Fruitcake"

Despite being on nearly fifteen years with 9 seasons, this is the first time I have watched SpongeBob Squarepants, though I have caught a few minutes here and there while channel surfing. The Christmas special is actually funny and charming, though I didn't care for Santa's design. I have to give the producers credit for using stop motion over 2D animation, as it gives the special more of a holiday feeling. There are no traditional Christmas carols, as there are only original songs that fit in with the characters and style of the series. Overall, It's A SpongeBob Christmas! is a cute show and I'm sure families will enjoy watching it year after year around Christmastime.
