Interview with author Kathleen S. Allen

What or whom inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve been writing since I was eight years old. I began writing poetry in the first grade and self-published my first book of poetry. Okay, I paper punched holes in notebook paper, make a construction paper book jacket and copied my poems in my best printing. I tied it all together with a red ribbon. I’ve been writing ever since.

What types of books do you read?

Mysteries, Young Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction, Fantasy What well-known authors do you admire most? JK Rowling, Anne McCaffrey, Lois Lowry, Maria V. Synder, Veronica Roth to name a few.

What were your writing habits while writing War of Fei? I write early in the morning before my day job and then again after I get home. I try and write every day. My writing goal is 2,000 words a day. I don’t always achieve it but I get close.

How did you come up with the plot?

The plot is a continuation of LORE OF FEI, the faeries are battling the humans to recover their land.

What is your favorite part in War of Fei?

The part where Ariela learns to shoot a medieval long bow. I’ve always admired archers and she has an inate sense when it comes to archery.

What was the hardest part to write?

The battle scenes were the hardest for me only because I’ve never written them before. I had to do a lot of research for those scenes.

What character is the most/least like you, and in what ways?

Ariela, she’s strong and independent and she doesn’t always believe in abilities even though others around her do. The character least like me is Balen, one of the human warriors. Like, Kel, another warlord, he will do anything in order to possess Ariela.

What would your ideal career be if you couldn't be an author?

I wish it was my full-time career but it’s not. If I wasn’t a writer/author I’d probably be an actress. I was a theatre major in college and I enjoyed being in plays. I’ve done all aspects of theatre, acting, make-up, lights, props, set building and design, costume design and costume making, stage manager, director, sound technician and by far my fave was the acting.

Do you read reviews of your books? If so, do you pay any attention to them, or let them influence your writing?

I sometimes read them but I don’t let them influence my writing at all. Not everyone has the same taste in books so if a reader doesn’t like my book for whatever reason, it’s fine.

Do you find it hard to balance your writing with your personal life?

No. I have no personal life. LOL.

Do you have any other books in the works?

Yes, I have a young adult contemporary coming out soon from Gypsy Shadow Publishing it’s a comedy of errors meets Cyrano de Bergerac type of book. It’s basically about a 17 year old girl who feels invisible because she is “a double-digit size” and her attempt to get noticed. It’s funny in parts and serious in others.

Do you have a blog, website, or links to share?

Yes. I have two author websites, I am on Twitter and have a fan page on Facebook.

Book Description: The faeries are ready to declare war on the humans who threaten to take away Fei, the land of the faeries. They enlist the help of the elves who do not trust either the faeries or the humans.

The cost of war almost proves too much for the faeries as more and more of them are lost in battle.

Will it be enough to win their hard-earned freedom or will the battle be lost forever?

Short Excerpt: I got up to study the maps and fingered Glador’s map to the north. The land of the forgotten elves and where the faeries from Fei escaped. It happened when the humans began swarming into Fei, taking over the land. Rion, the faerie with whom I joined, had traveled to Glador soon after Cwicseolfor had been born, in order to ascertain how many elves would be fighting against the humans now living in Fei. Rew, Rion’s brother, went with him and so did their father, Rhyn. They flew on our dragons, Bura and Ori. Tashie, my dragon, stayed behind in case I needed her and to nurture her own baby, Shri, who recently hatched.
