[Review]- 'Dead Until Dark' by Charlaine Harris

Charlaine Harris has brilliantly brought the vampire legacy into the modern era, where vampires are now legal. Japanese vampires use TrueBlood, synthetic blood developed by the Japanese, to coexist with humans.

Sookie Stackhouse lives in the small town of Bons Temp, Louisiana, with her grandmother. She's a waitress at Merlottes, but she's not like the other waitresses. She has the ability to read people's minds. Sookie regards this as a handicap. It's difficult for her to date anyone when she knows what everyone is thinking. When a dark, handsome vampire named Bill Compton walks into Merlottes, her life is turned upside down. Bill is the first vampire in Bons Temp and is over a hundred years old.

Sookie saves Bill from the Rattrays, who intend to use his blood for drug purposes. Sookie, unable to read Bill's thoughts, begins to fall for the vampire, causing friction between Sookie and her boss, Sam Merlottes. Sam has a crush on her and is keeping a dark secret from her. There are several deaths, fang-bangers, in the town as she gets closer to Bill, and one death hits close to home. Sookie's womanizing brother, Jason, is the prime suspect, having had relationships with all of the victims.

Sookie must use her telepathic powers to find the killer before she’s the next victim.

Final Thoughts

Humor and clever writing highlight this book above other vampire novels. The quirky characters and plot twists kept me turning the pages until the very end. -- ★★★★½
