BATTLE MOUNTAIN
A Joe Pickett Novel
by C.J. Box
Putnam, 2025
The campaign of destruction that Axel Soledad and Dallas Cates wreaked on Nate Romanowski and Joe Pickett left both men in tatters, especially Nate, who lost almost everything. Wondering if the civilized life left him vulnerable to attack, Nate dropped off the grid with his falcons in tow to prepare for vengeance.
When Joe gets a call from the governor asking for help finding his son-in-law, who has gone missing in the Sierra Madre mountain range, he enlists the help of a local, a rookie game warden named Susan Kany.
As Nate and fellow falconer Geronimo Jones circle closer to their prey, Joe and Susan follow the nearly cold trail to Warm Springs. Little do Nate and Joe know that their separate journeys are about to converge . . . at Battle Mountain.
Fans of the long-running modern-day Western series might have felt a little frustrated with the character deaths in the last book, Three-Inch Teeth—and let’s be honest, that bloodthirsty bear subplot was quite a leap. Still, it was an improvement over Storm Watch, which I rated three out of five stars.
Now, in Battle Mountain, C.J. Box jumps right into the action. Nate Romanowski is on a mission for revenge, targeting Axel Soledad, the man responsible for his wife’s tragic death. The story delivers violence and bloodshed—exactly what I expected—but I was pleasantly surprised by the intensity of the scenes. The author must have taken the fans' criticism to heart and really upped his game this time.
But this story isn't solely about Nate; after all, it's called Joe Pickett for a reason! At the behest of Governor Rulon, Joe joins forces with rookie game warden Susan Kany as they venture into the Sierra Mountain Range to find the governor’s missing son-in-law and a mountain guide. The tension builds as their paths converge in a climactic and bloody showdown at the summit.
This tale moves at a breakneck pace, but it’s not one for newcomers. To truly appreciate the depth of this plot, you'll need to be well-versed in the previous two books, as familiar characters return, some stepping into more pivotal roles that enrich the overall narrative.
