Review — THE CHOSEN: LAST SUPPER, PART ONE {$10 Amazon Giveaway)

The Chosen returns for Holy Week, a significant period in human history. During this time, dynamics shift, friendships are betrayed, and influential leaders conspire against Jesus. The Chosen: Last Supper represents a critical event for the Easter season.

This series will be presented in theaters in three segments. Part One (episodes 1-2) is scheduled for release on March 28; Part Two (episodes 3-5) will be released on April 4; and Part Three (episodes 6-8) is set to debut on April 11. Tickets for screenings in the United States and Canada can be purchased at thechosenlastsupper.com/tickets/

This groundbreaking historical drama is based on the life of Jesus (portrayed by Jonathan Roumie) and is experienced through the perspectives of those closest to him. Set against the backdrop of Roman oppression in first-century Israel, the series offers an authentic and intimate examination of Jesus’ transformative life and teachings. The populace of Israel embraces Jesus as their king, while his disciples anticipate his ascension. However, rather than confronting Roman authority, Jesus challenges the prevailing Jewish religious festival. This provocation threatens the existing power structures, prompting the religious and political leaders of the time to take extreme measures to guarantee that this Passover meal will be Jesus' final one. Filmed in a visually striking cinematic style, The Chosen: Last Supper brings to life one of history's most critical weeks through this unique three-part theatrical presentation.

Let me begin by clarifying that I have only had access to the first episode of Part 1 of The Last Supper, also known as Season Five, so my review is limited to this initial installment rather than the entire season or the forthcoming episodes. The episode I watched runs slightly over 60 minutes and sets the stage for significant developments.

In this episode, Jesus Christ and His disciples have returned to Israel in the shadow of mounting tensions. The leaders in Rome are already conspiring to ensure that the upcoming Passover will mark Jesus’s final days. This hints at a deliberate pacing for the season, likely extending the narrative toward the pivotal Last Supper, which I presume will become a central focus in the final episodes. Based on what I have read, the story of Jesus's death and resurrection will unfold in subsequent seasons—reportedly, there are seven seasons planned for the entire series. For those familiar with The Chosen, the interplay and drama among the disciples remain as compelling as ever, although some aspects feel somewhat repetitive. Additionally, the political atmosphere and the pervasive fears among the Roman leaders add layers of tension to the storyline. Jonathan Roumie continues to deliver a powerful performance as Jesus, showcasing a depth of character that resonates deeply with viewers.

However, I find the dialogue to be a mixed bag. At times, it feels too modernized, straying from historical accuracy and detracting from the genuine weight of the story. Despite these shortcomings, the episode does successfully convey profound messages of faith, hope, sacrifice, and resurrection, which remain central to the series and resonate with the audience. Overall, while there are areas for improvement, the compelling themes and strong performances keep me engaged and eager for what comes next.

    1. Write what you read. If you read romances, write romance. If you read Christian fiction, then write Christian fiction. If you read mysteries, write mysteries, and so on.
