  Billy's Answer

I came up with this week's prompt before last year's NaNoWriMo controversy. That being said, yes, I attempted the 50,000-word challenge a few times, but here's the thing: November is a short, complicated month for everyone. People in the United States are prepping for Thanksgiving and probably getting a jumpstart on their Christmas shopping; therefore, they don't have much free time for writing, especially those with day or night jobs, on top of other responsibilities. November is a bad month for a writing challenge.

I don't believe I've read a book written during NaNoWriMO.

  1. Omigosh, I completely forgot about including the holiday craziness in my answer too! There is so much going on in November that trying to do a big challenge like this is insane. There's work, there's Thanksgiving, I have family member's with birthdays this month and then yes, all the Christmas prep. November is really a terrible month for it. I think they had one in the summer, June or July maybe? As an alternative, but still with all the bad press surrounding NaNoWriMo, I think it's a lost cause to do it in an official capacity with them, but if one wanted the challenge, I'd say do it without registering or however that works!

    Here's my BBH

    1. I attempted to give it a try this year but decided to delete my account with NaNoWriMo. Personally, I don't want anything to do with them. As for a writing challenge, it would be best to pick a month with 31 days, so you get that extra day for writing.

  2. I knew nothing about this, but thank you and Jessica for the information, Billy.

    1. While there was some press about the "controversy," the mainstream media didn't cover it, so it went under my radar until this past Spring.

  3. Oh, I'd forgotten there was controversy surrounding NaNo last year. I wasn't signed up to participate so it mostly missed my radar. Even with participating in the past, the holidays never even occurred to me for my response to the prompt, but you're absolutely right that they make November a harder month for the challenge. I hope you have a great week. - Katie

    1. The holiday season is a terrible time to start a writing challenge.

  4. We do start to bulk up our Christmas shopping in November. I do try to shop over the year 😂

I've not participated as I don't have any spare time. Maybe one day when the kids are older 😂

    Have a great weekend!
