[Review] — "ORDINARY ANGELS" is a Touching, Tearjerker

The endearing true story Ordinary Angels, starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank (*1999 Best Actress: Boys Don't Cry; *2004 Best Actress: Million Dollar Baby) and Alan Ritchson (Amazon Prime's Reacher), is currently playing in movie theaters via Lionsgate. Rounding out the cast are Nancy Travis (Last Man Standing), Tamala Jones (Castle), and Skywalker Hughes (Joe Pickett).

Ordinary Angels (PG; 118 minutes)—directed by Jon Gunn and written for the screen by Meg Tilly and Kelly Fremon Craig—tells the story of Sharon Stevens (Hilary Swank), a fiery but failing hairdresser in small-town Kentucky, who finds a new purpose in life after meeting Ed Schmitt (Alan Ritchson), a widower who is working very hard to support his two children. Sharon is determined to support the family and will do whatever it takes to ensure that Ed's youngest daughter, Michelle (Emily Mitchell) receives the liver transplant she so desperately needs. It's a heartwarming story of faith, miracles, and ordinary angels.

Here are a few fascinating movie-related facts: The film was originally slated for release on October 23, 2023, but to avoid clashing with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, a concert film, it was delayed until 2024. One of the producers is the singer-songwriter Dave Matthews, who has a song in the ending credits. Learn more about Ordinary Angels at www.ordinaryangels.movie.

Let me summarize my feelings about Ordinary Angels quickly and simply: I enjoyed the film. This touching family movie is about having faith and persevering when everything seems against you. It is based on a true story, though I'm not sure how much of it is; this is the first I've heard of the Schmitt family or Sharon Stevens. I'm sure some information has been changed or omitted for entertainment value. The acting was superb and convincing, particularly Alan Ritchson's performance, which demonstrates how he can handle emotional nuance beyond the clichéd action-type characters. Given that Hilary Swank has won two Oscars, it goes without saying that she excelled in portraying the complicated Sharon.

Overall, Ordinary Angels exceeded my expectations; it's a skillfully crafted, poignant tale beautifully performed by an impressive cast and director. I urge everyone to see the movie. ╌★★★★✰
