About GIRL ON TRIAL
Does doing one bad thing make you a
bad person?
Sixteen-year-old Emily Keller, known
by the media as Keller the Killer, is accused of causing the deaths of four
family members, including young children. Emily is one of the youngest females
to be accused of a crime so heinous, making this the nation’s biggest trial of
the year. But what really happened that fateful night―and who’s responsible―is
anything but straightforward.
Living in a trailer park in Baltimore
with her twin brother and alcoholic mother, Emily’s life hasn’t been easy.
She’s had to grow up fast, and like any teen, has made questionable decisions
in a desperate attempt to fit in with her peers. Will her mistakes amount to a
guilty verdict and a life in prison? It’s up to the jury to decide.

Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll, 13 Reasons Why by Jay
Asher, and One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus.
My Review
GIRL ON TRIAL is the polar opposite of the books I've been reading recently. The cover, while appealing, did not pique my attention, but the blurb piqued my curiosity enough to make me want to read it. The narrative feels plucked from the headlines: a girl accused of murdering a family of four—or, more precisely, murdering the two little children she babysat and their parents by leaving the gas on inside their home.
Teen peer pressure, drugs, rape, and abuse are among the subjects addressed in the novel. Kathleen Fine, the author, weaves an emotionally charged narrative that gets played out like a 90s made-for-TV movie based on "real" events; though GIRL ON TRIAL is fiction, the plot seems authentic.
Overall, GIRL ON TRIAL is a well-written teen drama/murder case that works on many levels. While I felt hesitant in the beginning pages, the author's creative twists and well-written dialogue had me turning the pages, and I finished it all in one sitting. —★★★★★
