The film, based on Greg Laurie and Ellen Santilli Vaughn's novel of the same name, is set in the 1970s, centering on young Greg Laurie (Joel Courtney) hunting for all the right things in all the wrong places, until he encounters Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), a charismatic hippie-street preacher. Together with Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), they open the doors of Smith's languishing church to an unexpected resurgence of radical and renewed love, resulting in what TIME Magazine calls a JESUS REVOLUTION.
I must be living under a rock these days since I had never heard of JESUS REVOLUTION until I spotted the movie poster outside my town's one-screen theater a few weeks ago. Did I see it in theaters? No, unfortunately. As I previously stated, I had never heard of the film and had no idea who played in it or what it was about. In addition, I have never read the book from which it's derived. It wasn't until I started receiving press announcements about the digital and impending DVD and Blu-ray releases that I realized what the movie was about.
For some reason, I was anticipating a sappy B-level picture, but to my surprise, the film was beautifully written and directed. And, for the most part, the performances were superb, with Kelsey Grammer being the standout. The cinematography was excellent, and the score was good.
Overall, I liked JESUS REVOLUTION. It's an eye-opening biography movie that I recommend to everyone. ╌★★★★★
