{Sunday Post} — Everybody Dies, Mount Dragon, and Red Metal

The Caffeinated Book Reviewer's Kimberly hosts a weekly meme called "The Sunday Post"!

* Weekly Tidbits *

  • The Kansas City Royals are off to a strong start in the 2023 season. Without including today's game, we're now 0-2 and haven't scored a single run. Awesome work!

What Am I Currently Reading?

I haven't taken up Lawrence Block's The Girl with the Long Green Heart in a while, so I'm still on page 39. I borrowed three books from the library: Quentin Tarantino's Cinema Speculation, Preston & Child's Brimstone, and Grady Hendrix's How to Sell a Haunted House. This afternoon, I'll begin reading Cinema Speculation. Then I'll begin Weeks: Book 3 by Jasyn T. Turley, either tonight or tomorrow. (I forgot to include it in the top image, so it's not shown.) Also, I'll be reading The Immortal Detective by D.B. Woodling for an upcoming blog tour. In no particular order, I'll read Dungeons & Dragons: The Druid's Call by E. K. Johnston and Where Are the Children Now? by Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke.

What's in the Mail?

I received three ARCs in the mail. Union Quire & Co. sent a copy of Patrick Worrall's The Partisan for an upcoming blog tour. It's a thriller set during the Cold War. Now for the one that baffled me: Amulya Malladi's A Death in Denmark was sent to me by William Morrow. I don't recall signing up for a blog tour to review the book. However, I remember getting a press release about it, but I never requested a copy. So I'm assuming the publicist decided to take a chance and send me a copy in the hopes that I'd review it. I will most likely read the book because it seems intriguing. Last but not least is Countdown by James Patterson and Brendan DuBois, a book I requested from Little Brown & Company.

I bought some cheap books from eBay, and they arrived in the mail pretty quickly. The books are Red Metal by Mark Greaney; Full Wolf Moon by Lincoln Child; and The Wheel of Darkness, Relic, and Reliquary by Preston & Child.

What's New on the Shelf?

I forgot to mention in last week's post that I had bought Clive Cussler's The Gray Ghost by Robin Burcell. During the week, I picked up Clive Cussler's Marauder by Boyd Morrison at a Dollar General for $3, Cold Snap by Mark Cameron for whatever Walmart calls full price; and Trust Me by Hank Phillippi Ryan and Shadow Garden by Alexandra Burt at a Dollar Tree for $1.25 each.

I went to an antique store (more like a flea market) hoping to find some Preston & Child books, but I ended up buying a few other novels instead: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager by Diane Gabaldon; Debt of Honor by Tom Clancy; Transgressions: Keller's Adjustment by Lawrence Block and Forever by Jeffery Deaver; Everybody Dies by Lawrence Block; and The Drop by Michael Connelly. Yeah, I already have copies of the Outlander books, but the covers of these paperbacks are different. They were $5 bundled together. Debt of Honor was one dollar, while the other three were between one and two dollars.

I had no plans of going to the Salvation Army thrift store last Monday, but I did so after receiving a text from my mother asking if I wanted to go—and it's a good thing I did since I found ten 10-cent paperbacks that were perfectly up my alley. The titles are Mount Dragon by Preston & Child; The Price of Blood by Chuck Logan; Total Control by David Baldacci; Tom Clancy's Power Plays: Politika by Jerome Preisler; Harvest of Stars by Poul Anderson; Righter 10 by Arthur C. Clarke and Mike McQuay; Rama II by Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee; Mars Underground by William K. Hartmann; Rebel Moon by Bruce Bethke and Vox Day; and Mars by Ben Bova.

My Kindle has several fresh ebooks. Let's start with the monthly Star Trek eBooks. I didn't own three of the nine titles now on sale for 99 cents. The three books are TNG: A Hard Rain by Dean Wesley Smith, Captain's Blood, and Captain's Glory by William Shatner (with Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens). Captain's Peril, the first book in the "Totality" trilogy, is missing. Why wasn't the book available for purchase? It is a question I am unable to answer. Instead of paying the $8.99 Kindle price, I purchased the hardback from eBay for half the price, along with some other books; more on those when I get them.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Also, I grabbed TekWar and TekLab by William Shatner (ghostwritten by the late Ron Goulart), Tom Clancy's Op-Center: Call of Duty by Jeff Rovin, and The Cardinal of the Kremlin by Tom Clancy. Not pictured in the above image are the eBooks Elizabeth and Childgrave by Ken Greenhall that Valancourt Books put on sale today for $2.99 apiece.

  4. I spoke too quickly. Captain's Peril is now available for 99 cents on Kindle. I went ahead and bought it as an eBook since 99 cents couldn't be beat, even though I had just purchased the hardback from eBay for a low price.
