Weekly Tidbits
- Even though I had my flu vaccination last month, I somehow contracted a bug that left me sick for the remainder of the week. On Monday, I felt run down, but at the time, I attributed it to the weather and my allergies. Then, on Tuesday night, I started experiencing flu-like symptoms, followed by a high temperature that persisted until early Wednesday morning. Since then, I've been feeling better, but as of Friday night, when I wrote this post, I've developed a nasty cough.
- This year, I abandoned NaNoWriMo. I don't have the spare time to work on a writing project that I don't care about, but if I were getting paid to create this specific, flimsily conceived narrative, I wouldn't have any trouble finishing it in 30 days.
I've read 72% of Star Trek: Vanguard: Harbinger by David Mack; this was the "flu" book I'd read while sitting in a recliner, covered in a blanket. Then I read more of it on Thursday evening during a two-hour power outage caused by a heavy downpour.
As of this writing, I'm on the second chapter of Thief of Fate by Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets. It's a short book, so I might've finished it when this post goes live.
Next, I'll read No Plan B by Lee and Andrew Child—a Jack Reacher novel that I can probably read in one or two sittings.
On my Kindle, I need to read Paperback Jack by Loren D. Estleman—a Netgalley ARC with a publication date closing in on me.
I'll be doing some multi-reading over the weekend, including finishing Dune by Frank Herbert—the sci-fi epic I began reading earlier this year and had to put aside for ARCs. The Annabelle bookmark is still between pages 170 & 172, and I'll pick up exactly where I had left off. Then I'm going to skip around in the franchise and read Dune: The Duke of Caladan and Dune: The Lady of Caladan, both written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The third book in the prequel spinoff trilogy, Dune: The Heir of Caldan, is being sent to me to review. These aren't standalone, so I need to read them in the correct order.
Lastly, there's Desert Star by Michael Connelly, the newest "Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch" novel, which arrived on my doorstep moments ago. Somehow, someway, I'm going to squeeze in this novel, too.

What Has The Mail Delivered?
The "Star Trek: New Earth" books I briefly discussed in last week's post arrived in the mail. The titles are Wagon Train to the Stars by Diane Carey, Belle Terre by Dean Wesley Smith with Diane Carey, Rough Trails by L. A. Graf, The Flaming Arrow by Kathy Oltion and Jerry Oltion, Thin Air by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith, and Challenger by Diane Carey.
Does this cover immediately scream "Star Trek"? From the 1970s through the early 1980s, there were some unique Star Trek book covers, like Devil World by Gordon Eklund, which I've wanted a copy of for a while and was finally able to purchase off of eBay. Bantam Books released it for the first time in 1979, with a cover designed by Enric Torres-Prat.
What's New on the Shelf?
Nobody works at the local library. When I walked in, I saw no librarian in sight. I went to the "free books" section and grabbed A Cat's Tale: A Journey Through Feline History by Baba the Cat, Nightwoods by Charles Frazier, and Crimson Shore by Preston & Child.
I made a quick stop at the thrift store and got one ten-cent paperback, The Visitation by Elna Stone. And on the same day, Thursday, I got dragged to an antique store by my mother, who didn't buy anything there, but I ended up getting The Wastelands: The Dark Tower III by Stephen King for 75 cents and The Bourne Imperative by Eric Van Lustbader for 50 cents. Wait a minute—Don't you already own The Wastelands? Yep. I own two or three other copies, and this copy has a different cover.
I'm so sorry you haven't been well! I had the same thing this year after having the flu jab - I think it must be a strain it isn't protecting against. I had my covid jab yesterday too but thankfully had no symptoms except a sore arm. Everyone else is reporting being very sick with it :-/
ReplyDeleteI saw you have some Star Trek books in your haul! I LOVE Star Trek books, well, the ones I've read so far at least. I really hope you like them.
In the middle of October, I received both my final COVID booster, and the flu shot; perhaps this is why I fell ill.
DeleteStar Trek was something I grew up watching, but I lost all interest around 2001 or 2002. Over the past few years, my interest in the franchise has returned.
Haven (based loosely on the Colorado Kid) is one of my favourite tv shows.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better.
Wishing you a great reading week
The founder and editor of Hard Case Crime, Charles Aradi, mentions the Haven television series in his introduction to The Colorado Kid.
DeleteWow - lots of good bookish news here. Glad you're feeling somewhat better and can dive into these books. I've read 11 Karin Slaughter books and have a few on my TBR but not this one. I read Dune for the first time earlier this year but don't think I'll continue the series .....just too many books to read. :) Enjoy your week.

ReplyDeleteWill be curious to see what you think of Dune.
